About 3 years ago my husband started sleeping in the spare room due to his incessant snoring. Not only did it wake me up in the night, it stopped me from getting to sleep. I couldn't use ear plugs because I had to be on call overnight sometimes for my work and also my Mum was getting frail and she may have needed to contact me at night. He is also a light sleeper, and would often wake me up when he was getting up in the night to go downstairs if he couldn't sleep ( he would inevitably drop his phone on the bedroom floor when doing that , which meant I was seething with fury and couldn't get back to sleep!!) Any way..... three years later I have retired from work, my mum died and my husband lost weight and doesn't seem to snore. But, I don't want to ever share a bed with anyone ever again. My husband also seems happy with the arrangement. I love my own space, to read as long as I like, paint my nails at bedtime, have the room / bed as warm/cool as I like, listen to podcasts. So why do I feel that it is an admission of failure? That married couples should somehow sleep together, like my parents and grandparents did? I shouldn't care what people think, but I never tell friends/family that we don't sleep in the same bed if the subject ever comes up. It kind of feels like separate beds equals emotional distance too. We get on fine, we been together 30 years with the usual ups and downs. Does anyone else have this arrangement? If so do you feel a bit uneasy about it? Or are we just conditioned to sleep in the same bed as our partners?

We did this for a long time due to various reasonable reasons such as you cite. However, he suddenly passed away in the night in 2018, and now I'd give anything to have that time back and if I could I would stay as close as possible as much as possible ♥️

I'm sorry for your loss 💐
I understand what you're saying, but you made the decision which was best for you both at the time. You can't know what's going to happen.

I’m the snorer in our house and we sleep in separate beds. Isles bothered my husband at times but when we try he always ends up elsewhere. I’ve been terrible all my life. It’s so embarrassing. I do know a few friends of varying ages who do the same , and my argument with anime finding it strange is that sleep is just so important. It can’t be sacrificed for the sake of it because so much can go badly if it does health wise, work, temperament etc.

We sleep cuddled up together in a standard double bed. At some point during the night our children migrate to join us, thankfully the dog has stopped trying to get in. Hoping to get a king size this year having moved house and having a bigger bedroom. I like sleeping with my husband. I love the man to bits. Id live in his pocket... With the exception of when my children were age 1-3 and we were still a dusting to the insane working parent workload when we were touched out and exhausted and we slept hanging off opposite ends of the bed 😂

It wouldn’t work for us but people should do whatever works for them.

Separate rooms.

I would hate to have to share a bed again. It's just so much nicer to sleep alone.
We always struggled because he is a very light sleeper and I toss and turn. He likes silence and total darkness and I like white noise and a bit of moonlight. He likes to be hot and I like to be cold. Window open for me, closed for him.

It was torture for both of us.

We do this
We have a baby and a 3 year old in with me and my husband works crazy shifts
We would drive each other crazy if we were in the same room
I think its perfect

Someone doth protest too much Grin

No one is jealous of anyone who sleeps separately and usually has a sexless relationship as part of the bargain. No-one.

Edited

Do you only have sex at night, in bed? Tres dull darlin'! 😂

CoastalCalm · Today 18:47

Separate rooms and separate bathrooms here and works perfectly , twin beds if we are in a hotel for one night but rent two bedroom appartments if on holiday

'We get on fine' says it all really. I got on fine with my ExH. My current husband is my best friend and love of my life. I don't like being touched when I'm asleep, but I put up with his snoring so we can fall asleep and wake up together. Otherwise it's a house share.

silverstorm101 · Today 18:50

We sleep in the same bed but each have our own duvet which was an absolute game changer 😂

No, a house share is something different.

Totally different. Even in the weeks we slept apart I visited for a cuddle in the mornings.

We sleep separately for exactly the same reasons, Dh snores and I don't sleep well, so it suits us both. We are both a lot calmer and more relaxed around each other as a result because we no longer resent night time disturbances
