Unpack online food shopping into bags!!

Please help me understand why would you unpack food delivered to your house into bags?

I obviously understand if you would struggle to lift the heavy trays that putting it into bags is better.

but my friend was over when I had my shopping delivered and she couldn’t understand why I carry the trays into my kitchen and not unpack into bags.

as I am physically able to carry the trays, how is it easier to unload into bags then unload again into kitchen ??

I use Asda and the driver often carries the crates in and helps unload them into the kitchen. It gets done quickly when he helps. I have used bags when I've had especially heavy things but drivers usually are happy to help.

I’m with you, OP - carry the crates into the kitchen, dump everything out onto the counter, return crates to door. I don’t see how this takes any longer than transferring everything into bags at the door, which seems like a really pointless additional step.

i chuck it into bags or a box by the door so the driver can get on his way.

Yeah this. We have a few large baskets.

Franjipanl8r · Today 20:36

I think it depends how near your kitchen is to your front door.

So you hold up the driver by taking the trays into the house and unloading them ? Leaving the driver waiting at the door instead of him being able to be on his way

The driver is normally out bringing more crates to the house anyway when I’m emptying the first one he’s brought and you’re probably talking about 30 seconds difference even if that. Putting from crates into bags to then have to unpack twice instead of just once seems incredibly stupid to me.

Oh. We don’t use bags. We always book a delivery for when both OH and I are home. Between us we carry the crates into the kitchen and unpack onto the table, and we’re quick. If one of the DCs is around, they help too. While we’re unpacking the first few crates, the driver is back at the van getting the next ones out, and then taking the empty ones back to the van. We keep him waiting hardly any time at all. The drivers are always chatty and pleasant, they don’t seem annoyed. In fact there’s one in particular who wants to chat for ages and it’s quite hard to get rid of him at the end of the delivery.

I doubt it would be any quicker for us to unpack the crates into bags by the door- the driver has to wait while someone does that. And like I said, OH and I are very speedy with the carrying and unloading of the crates into the kitchen which is a few steps from the front door.

So many of you seem to be very concerned re the delivery persons time allocation, have they told you they are finding it difficult to fit you in?
we do need help with a home delivery and that is why we don’t go to the supermarket anymore.
our drivers have never mentioned being pressured for time and are more than helpful.
they carry all crates to the kitchen or dining room and also lift out anything heavy. They also sometimes have a chat!
This is Tesco home delivery and I cannot fault them, we have had deliveries for quite a number of years with lots of different drivers but have never had a bad or rushed experience .

I was thinking the same!

Never expected to see so much relentless virtue-signalling on a thread about something as mundane as food delivery 😂. ( I bet the real reasons are feeling awkward having them standing at the door, or not wanting the draught coming into the house ).

Gremlins101 · Today 20:50

I take each crate in and chuck the stuff on the table, counter, couch, wherever and bring the box back to the driver... so I get you OP

lottiegarbanzo · Today 20:54

Fascinating. Packing from trays into bags, to unpack again, had never occurred to me. Would make sense if trays are too heavy but I don’t find that. We shuttle them in, empty quickly, then return.

Others’ knowledge of the length of time allocated to drivers for each delivery has never been shared with me. I’d assume ‘long enough to enable the system provided to work’.

I find very often they turn up early. Sometimes they call to see if they can deliver early but often they’re just sitting in the van having a break. I’ve never got the feeling they’re pushed for time. Not like parcel delivery drivers.

Only ever had food delivered once and the driver said I couldn’t take the trays into the house, I had to empty the trays at the door.

purplecorkheart · Today 21:09

I tend to have a few massive bags and have each one assigned to an area. Upstairs, kitchen, garage fridge/freezer. It saves times for the driver, I order for Saturday evening so have been their last drop so want to save time. Also those crates are dumped on grounds outside house where dogs may pee etc. Putting into my own bags only take maybe 5 mins more. Worth my time.

ColaColaColaCola · Today 21:11

i don’t like letting delivery people in my house so i empty it at the door
