Unpack online food shopping into bags!!

Please help me understand why would you unpack food delivered to your house into bags?

I obviously understand if you would struggle to lift the heavy trays that putting it into bags is better.

but my friend was over when I had my shopping delivered and she couldn’t understand why I carry the trays into my kitchen and not unpack into bags.

as I am physically able to carry the trays, how is it easier to unload into bags then unload again into kitchen ??

i chuck it into bags or a box by the door so the driver can get on his way.

Yep me too

I go to the back of the van with my bags! Makes packing the stuff into my bags so much easier at that height.

I wouldn’t want to have to keep 4-5 massive crates for a week to be honest! I have nowhere to store them.

No one stores the crates. They are always handed back empty, no matter what method!

Single50something · Today 18:40

The driver has to wait while you unload it all?
I changed to ocado a while ago and they give bags :)

Because loading it into bags at the front door helps the driver. It means he can get away and carry on with his other deliveries.

You're obviously happy to let him wait around for you while you unpack at your leisure, but you do you.

It takes the same amount of time to bung it all on kitchen counter, unless someone lives in a mansion and its a long walk to the kitchen. Its only about 5 meters from my front door. The only CFs are the ones who put it away in cupboards as they go!

FlamingoUmbrella · Today 18:44

We live in the arse end of nowhere. We can tell the driver wants to get going. So we chuck ours into a wheelbarrow!

The Ocado system seems like a really unnecessary use of single use plastic.

I also chunk in bags so the driver can head off and I can unpack at my own leisure... I thought that was normal?

It is. Always done this…

Ocado collect the used bags each week and recycle them. They will also take any other plastic carrier bags for recycling.

I’ve got a fairly large Kitchen, but I’d struggle to find somewhere to put those massive crates. far easier and quicker to whack them all into two bags for life and let the driver get on his way. They’re much happier when they can get the jobs done before their alloted time.

Some people have narrow Victorian hall and can't put into bags at door. Everyone just needs to do what is quicker considering their house.

insomniacalways · Today 18:57

I put it into bags at the door. Drivers have very limited time and those crates are mad heavy - you must not get a lot of tins!

It's better not to use the bags at all though, recycled or not. That's why supermarkets don't give out free plastic bags any more.

Mine comes in bags anyway, but I think I'd ask the driver to take the boxes upstairs to my kitchen so I could unpack onto the tables and work surfaces. Probably just as quick for him as it takes less time to put on tables than to pack into other bags - and then I'd have to unpack later anyway,

I know it’s better not to use plastic bags but I’m disabled and I can’t carry crates or keep bending down to pick up my shopping. I will only do online shopping at Ocado for this reason.

thebrowncatisback · Today 19:08

DH does this. He puts the crates on our kitchen work top. It drives me insane!

i unload into plastic boxes by my door to make it quicker for the driver

GainsvilleRockCity · Today 19:08

I decant into bags at the door, mainly as my front door is miles away from my kitchen and there's no easy access to my back door from the front of the house. I can throw a whole shop into carrier bags in a couple of minutes, including sorting them in to separate bags depending on where they need to be taken in the house. Im not wasting the drivers time this way either

lavendarwillow · Today 19:12

It takes me longer packing into bags at the door, it’s far quicker to just empty the trays onto kitchen surface. I’m far quicker than my neighbour - we have our deliveries to the same time.

mantlepiece · Today 19:14

So many of you seem to be very concerned re the delivery persons time allocation, have they told you they are finding it difficult to fit you in?
we do need help with a home delivery and that is why we don’t go to the supermarket anymore.
our drivers have never mentioned being pressured for time and are more than helpful.
they carry all crates to the kitchen or dining room and also lift out anything heavy. They also sometimes have a chat!
This is Tesco home delivery and I cannot fault them, we have had deliveries for quite a number of years with lots of different drivers but have never had a bad or rushed experience .

BooBooDoodle · Today 19:17

DH brings the crates into the kitchen and throws everything onto the counters. I start putting away. I’m usually done and waiting for the next crate by the time he’s had a chat to the delivery guy and sent back the subs.

ParryHotterAndTheStilosphersPhone · Today 19:17

I use either a laundry basket or bags for life, have them by the front door and empty into those as fast as possible so the delivery driver can get on their way. Then I take them into the kitchen and unpack.

Neither do Ocado - they charge for each bag, and credit ykur account for each one that is returned. There’s no way I would use a delivery service if I had a driver waiting for me to unpack a crate.

Strawberrydelight78 · Today 19:19

I chuck it into some foldable crates we have or a washing basket so the driver isn’t waiting around. Takes a couple of minutes then I take them into the kitchen and DD helps me put everything away.

Booklover78 · Today 19:24

Carry the trays into the kitchen and unpack everything on the floor- usually about 7-8 crates. Small hall so would be much more of a faff to pack in bags. Routine is very quick for us.

butterpuffed · Today 19:26

Our ASDA drivers carry the crates into the kitchen, then we both unpack and put goods on the kitchen tops.

I asked one why they do this and he said they think it's both nicer and quicker than hanging around at the door while the customer fills up bags .
