Unpack online food shopping into bags!!

Please help me understand why would you unpack food delivered to your house into bags?

I obviously understand if you would struggle to lift the heavy trays that putting it into bags is better.

but my friend was over when I had my shopping delivered and she couldn’t understand why I carry the trays into my kitchen and not unpack into bags.

as I am physically able to carry the trays, how is it easier to unload into bags then unload again into kitchen ??

i had far too much shopping to fit on my kitchen table, plus my table has things on it,

lollygiggler · Yesterday 12:14

Neither! We have a big trolley! We fill it at the door then wheel it through to the kitchen.

Superscientist · Yesterday 12:14

Crate into the hallway, unload there and then move to the appropriate room for putting away once the driver has left.
We have extra storage in the utility room as well as the freezer and a second fridge. The rest goes through to the kitchen

I suppose it depends on the size and set up of your house. Carrying crates into my kitchen and then emptying them there would take significantly longer than just the single step of emptying them at the door. The reason I empty into bags (large French bags for life) is because I can easily move a full one to then pack into the next empty one.

My last house kitchen was right by the door so I'd just carry the crates straight into the kitchen and dump everything onto the side as quickly as possible. I had a small hallway and faffing with bags wouldn't have been any quicker so would have been pointless.

Now I use Ocado so it's all bagged anyway...pay 10p per bag then return them the next week and get the 10p back.

Sahara123 · Yesterday 12:17

My delivery drivers bring the crates into the kitchen and ( usually) helps me unpack it onto the work top so that I can put it away. It would drive me nuts to put it all into bags then unpack again !

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · Yesterday 12:19

I use Ocado rather than Waitrose deliveries precisely because they bring your stuff in bags (and then collect the bags the next week). I cannot be doing with the faffing around with loose items in crates while the driver waits.

My kitchen is tiny and I get a whole week's shopping for 3 adults delivered every week.

I'd run out of counter space by the 3rd crate and there's normally between 6 and 7 of them.

But it takes hardly any time to fling it all into huge Sports Direct or Primark bags, and drag them into my kitchen when the deliverer has gone.

I take one tray to the kitchen unload it while the driver goes to the van to get another and then hand the empty tray back. It is very quick and simple.

I no longer get supermarket deliveries as I use services that deliver within an hour now. But when I still used them the driver just dropped the crates into my hallway, grabbed last weeks crates and left.

I had no idea this wasn't standard tbh. It was far easier than trying to madly unpack everything and wrangle the thief cat at the same time while the driver awkwardly stood waiting.

The supermarket let you keep the crates, why would you want them in your house all the time? That sounds odd to me, which shop was that?

SilenceInside · Yesterday 12:21

@Tryagain26 the drivers delivering to us bring all the crates in one go on a trolley so there’s no going back to the van to get the next crate.

That's a weird way for the driver to do it?

Mine arrive with all 6 or 7 crates stacked on a trolley and I remove the items from each one.

Canape · Yesterday 12:23

I try to like Ocado and use them sometimes and they are bagged but each delivery I fear what has been broken or squashed as the bag packing is abysmal and every time I order from them have to get a refund for some ruined or leaking item, I had a pack of beetroot leak and sugar over my hallway from a split bag because of the bad Ocado bag packing

hockityponktas · Yesterday 12:25

I unload at the door into a couple of big ikea bags and the drag to the kitchen. Dog/house layout/ crap in the way means this is quicker for me so the driver can get on! Appreciate though everyone has a way that works quickest for them🤷🏻‍♀️

Sometimes they stack and bring two at a time but never more and never on a trolly. They carry them down the drive.and carry the empty crates back up.

Jeez it's like their bosses want to make their jobs even harder.

If they don't have trollies, I wonder how the poor buggers deliver to apartment blocks?

Me too and I certainly wouldn’t want my shopping in crates having seen empty ones left outside at supermarkets for pigeons etc to crap on.

OttersOnAPlane · Yesterday 12:28

If your kitchen isn't near the door (like up a flight of stairs or something) or you don't have counter and table space, unloading into bags would make sense.

The delivery coming is my prompt to tidy the kitchen counters and table.

I respect the constrained time limits that the drivers need to adhere to and unload the trays into bags I have waiting inside by the door.

The one time I did that it took longer than unpacking everything onto the kitchen counter.

BluebellBeth · Yesterday 12:30

We carry ours through a handful at a time. The crates are unwieldy and too big for me to carry and if my dh carried them I'd have 5000 dents in my walls, doorframes, doors because he's clumsy.

Thecatandme · Yesterday 12:30

I live by myself so don't have the biggest order (usually 2 1/2 crates). Between us Waitrose driver and I can load them into bags (2 or 3) really quickly at the door. One or two bigger items and eggs go on the stairs. It wouldn't save any time carrying the crates through

Also (and much more importantly) I have an indoor cat and the only place to shut him in at delivery time is the kitchen/living room 😸

WokeUpEarlyWalkedTheDog · Yesterday 12:31

Carry crate into kitchen, chuck all contents quickly onto kitchen table and counters, carry crate back. Repeat. Big bottles of water, laundry stuff, loo rolls get taken out by front door and left there till all crates done.

My house is quite small though and it’s about 20 steps from the front door to kitchen.

AgentJohnson · Yesterday 12:32

Here in the Netherlands we pay a deposit for the crates so there isn’t the rush to unpack for the driver. The next time there is a delivery the previously used crates are collected and the deposit credited to my bank account.

Endoadnowarrior · Yesterday 12:33

I have a back problem and cannot carry the trays. The drivers are always very happy to carry the trays into my kitchen and often help me by lifting out heavy things like packs ld cans.
If that's the issue for your friend I.e. cant phyaicslly carry the trays let her know the drivers are allowed to carry them in for you.

ilovepixie · Yesterday 12:34

I didn’t realise you were allowed to take the crates into your kitchen!! I thought they had to be unpacked at the door so I’ve got used to doing it that way now.

littlemousebigcheese · Yesterday 12:35

Ocado so bags which is really easy. Used Asda once for a party and it was so frustrating trying to figure out what to do as my kitchen is far from the door and he was getting impatient with me so I just put it on the floor so he could leave. Wouldn’t use them again!
