Unpack online food shopping into bags!!

Please help me understand why would you unpack food delivered to your house into bags?

I obviously understand if you would struggle to lift the heavy trays that putting it into bags is better.

but my friend was over when I had my shopping delivered and she couldn’t understand why I carry the trays into my kitchen and not unpack into bags.

as I am physically able to carry the trays, how is it easier to unload into bags then unload again into kitchen ??

So you don't keep the driver waiting.

SarahE99 · Today 17:50

Holds up the driver. I have a few bags by the door and put the stuff in there so he can get going. Also do want those grubby trays in my house.

I pack into laundry baskets at the doorstep so the drivers can get on. I couldn't imagine holding them up while I take my time to unpack at my leisure. They don't get enough time allocated for those that need the extra time or assistance such as the elderly, disabled or infirm.

Carrying a tray into the kitchen, unloading it all onto a table isn’t really unpacking at leisure.

I am a bit decrepit and they won't come in still . I have two rather lovely shopping trollies . I sit in my chair outside my front door and I dump everything into shopping trolley one. I then have to find some umpff to get the shopping trolley inside (nightmare step) from then on its so easy . Get to fridge and either load into fridge or freezer or into shopping trolley 2 for later sort out 🤣 sorted . No bags

I’m with you, OP - carry the crates into the kitchen, dump everything out onto the counter, return crates to door. I don’t see how this takes any longer than transferring everything into bags at the door, which seems like a really pointless additional step.

If you can’t carry them the delivery driver will take them through to the kitchen for you. I wouldn’t want to be faffing with bags. You might as well go to the supermarket.

PurpleYarnivore · Today 17:58

I unpack it into those large blue Ikea bags then drag into kitchen .
Its the quickest for the driver to get on his / her way.
i don’t want the dirty crates on my nice kitchen table .

everyone I know who gets deliveries friends and family unloads into bags at the door .

Mumgonenuts2020 · Today 17:59

i use Ocado and it’s all in bags when it’s delivered then I keep the bags after unpacking and send them back on the next delivery being doing this for 10 years!

Lovely Sainsbury drivers carry the crates thro the utility room into my kitchen.
place them one at a time on one end of the table, whilst I unpack onto the other end of said table.

lanthanum · Today 18:04

We unload onto the kitchen table, and give the crates back before putting things away. I don't think the drivers begrudge the extra few seconds to take each crate into the kitchen, especially as we both work from home so there are two of us working on it. Occasionally a driver has offered to bring our newly-emptied bin up the drive while we're doing it!

Skyelils · Today 18:05

Mine doesn’t come in bags I always carry trays through and empty them

WalmartWitney · Today 18:05

Straight into the big IKEA blue bags, (they are great for this), as others have said, so that I don't need to keep driver waiting at the door. It only takes a few minutes.

ItsMeee00 · Today 18:05

My house is an L-shape with the kitchen being at the furthest point to the front door, if I carried each crate individually and unpacked it then got the next one etc the driver would have time to come in for a cup of tea, it’s much easier to chuck it into bags on the doorstep, plus I don’t personally want to be lugging crates through my house.

Longleggedgiraffe · Today 18:07

As I have limited mobility I have a standing instruction that the driver brings the trays directly into the kitchen where I quickly empty them onto the counter. Previously I used to empty them into bags at the door, so he coukd get away quickly.

I guess it's whatever works for you.

FFSItsTooHot · Today 18:13

You put far less into one carrier bag than is in one of those trays. I couldn't lift one of those trays die to my disability, but I can lift one carrier bag.

Juced · Today 18:14

Why would you hold up the delivery person they have time frames to work by, just have a couple of large shoppers ready. Is it just me or do you have zero awareness of anybody but yourself!

i chuck it into bags or a box by the door so the driver can get on his way.

This

JJMama · Today 18:17

I unpack it all from the crates so the driver can get going, and then put it all away in my own time once the driver has left. No need for bags.

I also chunk in bags so the driver can head off and I can unpack at my own leisure... I thought that was normal?

Same here. Just keep the bags in a handy place... I couldn't carry the trays anyway. Begore Vovid they ysed to offer ti bring them in but I've always preferred putting in bags at the door since they (Tesco) stopped bringing it in bags.

I order from Ocado and they deliver in bags - frozen in separate bags.

AllJoyAndNoFun · Today 18:22

Our driver brings first crate to door and rings bell and then I unpack that while he gets the next ones from the van- I just unpack onto the island and then give the crates back. I can’t see how putting it into bags first is quicker for the driver. But I guess it depends where your kitchen is relative to your front door- ours is right next to it

I no longer get supermarket deliveries as I use services that deliver within an hour now. But when I still used them the driver just dropped the crates into my hallway, grabbed last weeks crates and left.

I had no idea this wasn't standard tbh. It was far easier than trying to madly unpack everything and wrangle the thief cat at the same time while the driver awkwardly stood waiting.

I genuinely haven't seen a supermarket deliver and leave the crates since around 2004-2006 time.

I8toys · Today 18:25

Put into bags so driver can get away to the next person. I thought everyone did that

Zanatdy · Today 18:27

I load it into bags at the door.

I've not used online shopping for a few years but I used to do this with Sainsburys.

It all sounds like a massive faff now!

ColdLittleHeart · Today 18:31

How is it any quicker unpacking into bags than it is to take the crates into the kitchen?I’m with you OP, grab a crate and dump the items on the kitchen counters!
