Airbnb Host taking the piss

I’m staying in an Airbnb and working from my laptop. The Wi-Fi in my room was unreliable, and I had an important meeting, so I moved into the kitchen. The host suggested I use the spare bedroom instead for more privacy, and I’ve been working in there ever since. Some of her laundry was drying in the room.
After work, she walked in without knocking to collect a few items while I was in the middle of an important video interview. She also asked me to remove my own drying laundry from the room. Separately, I’ve asked her each night to turn the heating on, but she hasn’t.
Am I being unreasonable to expect her to knock before entering?

Good god woman - working out of someone's back room for three weeks is insane - spend some money on a decent hotel or co working space and bill your clients. This is insane.

@Arbourimage Just using the spare room when i need the wi-fi, but it has more space and rails to dry my clothes

Yeah - YABU to take over a second room that you aren't paying for and expect exclusive use of it. Be grateful she's let you do the swap around.

@Terrribletwos I'm based in Leeds but have been asked to be in London for a few weeks for meetings. I'm staying in an Airbnb and working remotely mostly

if work asked you to be in london surely they should be paying for hotel accommodation for you?

MairifaeInsch · Today 10:49

My son does this. Has to work in London 3 days a week and has a room in someone's house for 3 nights - a long term arrangement, and he can keep some personal stuff in the room.

Jarstastic · Today 10:49

Ask your host if you can get a long ethernet cable and plug it into the router.
And stay in the room you booked and paid for.

So, yet again @crikeymikey123 she should not be coming into your room. Regard this as an hotel. She should be absolutely definitely not be coming into your space for any reason..end of.

She's not going in his room, the host is going into her spare room

HalzTangz · Today 10:51

Surely the solution is to let her know when you will be on a video call. But if you are mostly working remotely I don't see why you couldn't just book hotels for the nights you need to attend in person

OP simply needed to ask 2 questions: 1. How good is the wifi - good enough to Zoom call from? 2. Would you mind if I work from home in your room for 3 weeks?

OP should not be leaving a bad review, her host has been exceptionally accommodating.

I disagree, this is a little bit like saying you have AC but turns out it only works half of the time. Internet nowadays is absolutely necessary, specially when travelling: doing your online checking, to monitoring your bank account, searching directions or answering emails, a "patchy internet" is a quite a problem. As working from home thats something most people do nowadays, I've never seen any airbnb rules stating it's forbidden to answer clients emails from your rented place or engage in zoom meetings. Airbnb will do nothing about it (they have bigger fish to fry) and thats why I would leave a bad review. Also: If someone is having a zoom meeting you don't walk inside, you knock on the door or wait (or you properly fix your bloody internet so guest doesn't have to go to some "spare room" to be able to have an online meeting without getting disconected).

You moved your own washing into her room?

Edited

Depends what the OP means by "patchy". There is a big difference between being able to check your bank account, find directions and answer emails and have video conferences for hours. Did OP's room have a desk? If it's didn't, it's a big hint that the room is not intended for home working.

I'm not sure how the AirBnB host would know that OP was having a zoom meeting without coming in the room first.

Sartre · Today 11:28

Why are you in London if you’re working remotely anyway? Sounds like a waste of money… The air BnB room set up also sounds hideous but then I’m the sort of person who wouldn’t be caught dead in a hostel, I hate sharing a bathroom.
