Airbnb Host taking the piss

I’m staying in an Airbnb and working from my laptop. The Wi-Fi in my room was unreliable, and I had an important meeting, so I moved into the kitchen. The host suggested I use the spare bedroom instead for more privacy, and I’ve been working in there ever since. Some of her laundry was drying in the room.
After work, she walked in without knocking to collect a few items while I was in the middle of an important video interview. She also asked me to remove my own drying laundry from the room. Separately, I’ve asked her each night to turn the heating on, but she hasn’t.
Am I being unreasonable to expect her to knock before entering?

She is BVVU

I am sure that you if you are renting a room via air bnb it should be exclusively your room and without others.

crikeymikey123 · Yesterday 20:26

I have rented a room, however the wi-fi was patchy, so I moved my laptop as the host suggested, into the 'spare' room

You need to complain to air bnb
In fact, is this actually air bnb?

Arlanymor · Yesterday 20:28

This doesn't sound like a usual Air BnB arrangement - you've rented a room?

crikeymikey123 · Yesterday 20:29

Rented a room in a house, the host is present in another room

Where you say 'after work' was she perhaps hinting that you shouldnt be in that room anymore?

Terrribletwos · Yesterday 20:30

It sounds like a very dodgy set up. Where are you @crikeymikey123

crikeymikey123 · Yesterday 20:31

South London, it's a 4 bed house, she airbnb's 2 rooms out

Sounds annoying in both directions. She needs better wifi and some patience, you need a hotel or coworking space if you're doing professional meetings.

Terrribletwos · Yesterday 20:33

Why have you needed to do this @crikeymikey123 ?

Wistfultearia · Yesterday 20:35

Is it a longterm let?
Were there arrangements specified for drying laundry?

LakeGeneva1 · Yesterday 20:36

Write exactly what you told on your final review. Let others know what theyre in for

Arbourimage · Yesterday 20:36

It sounds like you’re using rooms you haven’t actually rented. Was it a permenant room swap or using it temporarily for the WiFi? It’s not really clear? If you still have all your stuff in the original room you shouldn’t be using the spare room for drying your clothes just because she said you could use it for the WiFi signal.
Trying to do a work meeting in the kitchen is crazy though.

AnOldCynic · Yesterday 20:37

What’s your problem @Terrribletwos? You do realise that Airbnb started off as people renting rooms in their house? OP is requesting something perfectly reasonable.

How long are you staying there for @crikeymikey123?

crikeymikey123 · Yesterday 20:38

@Terrribletwos I'm based in Leeds but have been asked to be in London for a few weeks for meetings. I'm staying in an Airbnb and working remotely mostly

OP posts:
seahorsessky · Yesterday 20:39

Did it feel pointed, like she didn't think you should be working? As in she'd expected you were likely to be out all day, if most of her guests come for a holiday, so she's used to them being out?
Not that I'm saying you don't have the right to use a room you've paid for, but just thinking why she might behave this way. I would speak to her asap,

Airbnbs doesn't just have whole properties to rent. It looks like the OP rented one bedroom with use of the facilities such as a kitchen. This is actually how airbnb began. People would rent out a room in their own home in a very short term basis. It was a great way to enjoy staying in various places at a good price and I have met some interesting hosts. In the OP's case she had rented her bedroom which didn't have a good connection. The host suggested that the spare bedroom might be better for her rather than using the kitchen and hasn't charged her for two rooms. So no I don't think she has any justification to complain because the host is also using the spare bedroom for her own needs. The host could have just bustled around her kitchen where the OP would get even less privacy. If the OP has only rented her bedroom she can't lay claim to the spare bedroom for her sole use.

Should she have knocked? Yes. BUT. It’s her house, you rented A room in her house. You’re not in that room as she kindly let you use another. It is also kind of her to allow you to dry your laundry in there. I have stayed in Airbnbs where you get a room and shared use of the bathroom, and that’s it, that’s what you pay for and what it says on the tin. Full run of the house is an entirely different price bracket.

The WiFi bit is understandable but why would you think you can dry laundry in a different room to the one you’ve hired?

Have you permanently moved and stopped using the other room, and removed all your stuff? Or are you just using the spare room when you need the WiFi?

crikeymikey123 · Yesterday 20:43

@Arbourimage Just using the spare room when i need the wi-fi, but it has more space and rails to dry my clothes

OP posts:
ChampagneLassie · Yesterday 20:45

I’m thinking it is quite a cheap arrangement. If it’s not then I’d try to be politely assertive. Ie you need a private space for meetings. She could probably Amazon a booster and sort the WiFi in your room tomorrow

Idontgiveagriffindamn · Yesterday 20:46

Did you ask to dry your laundry in there?
