Airbnb Host taking the piss

I’m staying in an Airbnb and working from my laptop. The Wi-Fi in my room was unreliable, and I had an important meeting, so I moved into the kitchen. The host suggested I use the spare bedroom instead for more privacy, and I’ve been working in there ever since. Some of her laundry was drying in the room.
After work, she walked in without knocking to collect a few items while I was in the middle of an important video interview. She also asked me to remove my own drying laundry from the room. Separately, I’ve asked her each night to turn the heating on, but she hasn’t.
Am I being unreasonable to expect her to knock before entering?

@Wistfultearia it's a 3 week booking. No specific arrangements, there is a dryer but i don't like using it because it's bad for my clothes

@Arbourimage Just using the spare room when i need the wi-fi, but it has more space and rails to dry my clothes

You can’t claim two rooms then, you don’t have a monopoly of both at the same time.
You definitely can’t use that room to dry your clothes simply because she said you could use it when you were in your laptop.
I think overall it’s very clear you’re being the unreasonable one.

@Terrribletwos I'm based in Leeds but have been asked to be in London for a few weeks for meetings. I'm staying in an Airbnb and working remotely mostly

So, yet again @crikeymikey123 she should not be coming into your room. Regard this as an hotel. She should be absolutely definitely not be coming into your space for any reason..end of.

That’s not how renting one room in a house works op…

Idontgiveagriffindamn · Yesterday 20:49

Then you can’t just pressume to dry your clothes in there - that’s really cheeky

The op isn’t in her room though, she’s in the owners room

She’s not coming into the OP’s room without knocking though, it’s not the OP’s space that she booked.
If OP regarded this like a hotel she would be drying her clothes in the room next door or the corridor.

It was the OP that wasn't in her room though. The host hasn't done anything wrong - she said the OP could use the spare room for some work and clearly didn't expect the OP to stay there for hours. Or to start using it for her washing. Either the OP moves to the other room or sees if she can pay for both rooms.

crikeymikey123 · Yesterday 20:52

I'm entitled to wi-fi though, she's sold the room with wifi and it's not workable...

It sounds like a very dodgy set up. Where are you @crikeymikey123

I don't think you understand how Airbnb began.

arethereanyleftatall · Yesterday 20:53

Actually, I’m calling reverse.

the op is the owner. She has had a somewhat cheeky guest who she let use a different room to work in for WiFi, assumed office hours. The guest now appears to think that this new room is also theirs, and is there in all hours and drying clothes in there.

No she only has that right for the bedroom she rented not for the host's spare bedroom which the OP has not paid for. She's been allowed to use a quieter room that doesn't mean it's fucking hers. Maybe the host should tell her to keep her work to the single room she rented and then she could reasonably complain if the host came in!

If you don't want to use the dryer and can't hang things outside, you need to hang them in your room with a window open to avoid mould. Which will be cold for you, but you can't expect to use another room for drying clothes.
The host may be feeling that having been offered use of the spare room for online meetings because of the wifi problem , you are taking over too much of her space. You might have a chat with her and try to find a solution you are both happy with.

You’re using the WiFi in a shared space so no she doesn’t need to knock, she’s allowed to retrieve her belongings from her room when she wants and you’re unreasonable for drying your clothes in there.

You rented "A" room, not the whole house. She kindly let you have the spare room to work in, you should have told her if it was confidential as you were not in the room you were renting. And I am assuming you were not given permission to put your washing in a room you had not paid for. A bit cheeky really.

crikeymikey123 · Yesterday 21:02

Yeah, I think i'm gonna ask for a wi-fi extender
I'm a freelancer, so I'm paying but got a lot of meetings/workshops for 3 weeks

The host cannot legitimately rent out a room with crappy WiFi. It’s not a service.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · Yesterday 21:04

Of course you could ask to ' rent ' the other room instead of your room.

Why have you rented an Airbnb to do loads of virtual meetings in the first place? It’s an odd decision.
She’s not going to set up a WiFi extender because you have so many video calls. The WiFi is expected for general use and browsing, it’s not a co working space with guaranteed internet speeds.
