To think this is a decent day of eating?

I have prepped food for tomorrow and my partner says it’s awful, but I think it’s decent!

Breakfast is baked oats - whey protein added and made with dark chocolate chips and some frozen raspberries. 420 calories and 33g of protein.

Lunch - chicken pie with baby potatoes. Lighter puff pastry used. 520 calories and 54g of protein.

Dinner - beef stew. Beef, potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Snacks - light Greek yoghurt with stewed berries, and a packet of popchips.

Total - 1511 calories, 137g of protein and 37g of fibre.

I’m on a weight loss journey and will go to the gym before work tomorrow. I think it’s balanced, provides all my fruit and veg for the day (8 portions), hits my goals (im more worried about fibre than protein) and is genuinely tasty wholesome food.

YABU - this is unhealthy.

YANBU - it’s a good day of food.

When it comes to food yes. I’ve lost 130lbs and he’s always got something to say about what I’m eating. If we go out for a meal he’s always picking at it and saying I shouldn’t be eating it because I’ll put weight back on, or if we get a takeaway as a couple he expects me to eat a lot less than would be considered normal (I.e. if he wants a McDonald’s on the way home or something he’ll ask if I want something and then complain - if I want 6 nuggets he’ll say it should be 4, I should be getting a small chips etc)

Please get rid of this negging useless waste of space. You deserve better.

I don’t :)

What’s actually in the pie with the chicken ?

I’ve posted a literal full breakdown 😂 peas and carrots with a bit of vegetable stock as a gravy

So do the anti two hot meals a day never have an omelette or jacket potato for one meal and chicken casserole etc for another?

TheKeatingFive · 25/10/2026 15:30

Looks great to me.

Going against the grain but I think you might do better with hot, ‘heartier’ meals compared to classic diet food. I imagine you’d be more satisfied and less likely to stray off plan.

Yeah I definitely succeed more in the winter when I’m eating like this

It sounds pretty decent but it's a lot of food for one day.

Especially for someone who wants to lose weight.

It all sounds really nice. I don’t eat powders and wouldn’t have two hot meals in a day so it wouldn’t be for me but you’re the one eating it. It all individually sounds delicious!

I said it's a lot of food.

If I needed to lose weight, I'd probably skip the breakfast and snacks.

It's not always about the calories, and more about why you need so much volume.

jennyhumphreyseyeliner · 25/10/2026 15:26

Why is it odd and why would I lie?

I started at 26 stone, I’ve lost 9 stone over the last two and a half years or so. I go to the gym 5 days a week before work, stay hydrated and at the weekends prioritise getting out and about. I hit 10k steps everyday and can often have lower calorie days too!

Apologies, not meaning to doubt you, what you've achieved is fantastic. Great that you are so motivated and determined and going to the gym. But your loss over 2-3 years is averaging about 1lb a week. Which is what might be expected (usually with more lost in the early stages and tailing off). That's why losing 3lbs per week now looks unusual. Unless you've made some drastic changes.

Yes, it averages out to that. I’m in a huge loss phase at the moment - I cycle my weight loss to ensure I don’t become fatigued. I have higher loss phases like I’m in now, I slow it down sometimes and I also spend some months at maintenance (usually around summer when I’m going out a lot!)

I’m honestly really impressed 😂 I’ve never had it this good before.

Plus the stew will be repurposed when it’s gone all lovely and slow cooked and be used as a pie filling on one day, for another lower calorie/high protein lunch. I’d rather have three really hearty meals than loads of snacks to be honest

I think there's a lot in this.

If I ate cheese and crackers I'd probably end up eating the same number of calories but be hungry.

Increasing your steps as a regular habit is also good.

I’m confused. I’m in a good deficit and losing weight, but because I’m bulking meals out with veg that’s bad?

I get hungry. I like the oats after the gym as they keep me full after a fasted workout. I have a hot lunch around 1, and then because of my commute won’t eat until 7/7:30pm. I might not eat the snacks, but have them there and counted in case I want them. If I do get peckish, I’ll have the yoghurt and fruit before the crisps.

Are these very small portions? As otherwise I think you might be underestimating the calories

Exactly. I really subscribe to volume eating. So I’ll make “lower calorie” snacks that aren’t any good, but are better than reaching for a chocolate bar because it’ll keep me fuller for longer.

Genuinely if you’re not going to read the whole thread at least look at my replies where you’ll see that I’ve posted the exact breakdown of the calories twice, where I’ve weighed everything and tracked it in a calorie counting app.

He says it’s too many carbs and too many hot meals.

Too many hot meals!? According to what metric? If you're reaching 130+g protein on 1500 calories then you're not eating too many carbs. Ignore him, he's a know-it-all who knows nothing.

Meat and potatoes for both lunch and dinner is a bit much but otherwise fine. Just needs a a 40 min nature walk added to become a good day.

Why is it a bit much?

You get hungry because you eat a lot of food in one day.

If you ate less you'd eventually need less and wouldn't have to watch your weight so keenly.

The overriding difference between people who aren't overweight and those who are, is generally far less food consumption.

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · 25/10/2026 15:45

PressedThistle · 25/10/2026 14:45

I wouldn't want to eat that breakfast and those snacks, and I wouldn't have chicken pie and beef stew on the same day. So I am kind of with your partner. But you're the one who is eating it!

That's a question of taste though? Not health? Why would OP be interested in whether anyone else would fancy her meals for the day, that's not what she was asking!

It's 1500 calories. Please don't promote this kind of eating disorder rhetoric, it's harmful nonsense.
