To think this is a decent day of eating?

I have prepped food for tomorrow and my partner says it’s awful, but I think it’s decent!

Breakfast is baked oats - whey protein added and made with dark chocolate chips and some frozen raspberries. 420 calories and 33g of protein.

Lunch - chicken pie with baby potatoes. Lighter puff pastry used. 520 calories and 54g of protein.

Dinner - beef stew. Beef, potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Snacks - light Greek yoghurt with stewed berries, and a packet of popchips.

Total - 1511 calories, 137g of protein and 37g of fibre.

I’m on a weight loss journey and will go to the gym before work tomorrow. I think it’s balanced, provides all my fruit and veg for the day (8 portions), hits my goals (im more worried about fibre than protein) and is genuinely tasty wholesome food.

YABU - this is unhealthy.

YANBU - it’s a good day of food.

It’s only really calories that matter when trying to lose weight

To be fair that’s not entirely true.

Yes, calories matter greatly

But eating 30-40% protein on 1500 calories and 7-10 portions of veg and plenty of low fat dairy is much easier than eating 1500 calories of fat and sugar - the former keeps you full, fuels you , and also regulates insulin and even signals your body to produce more of its own GzLP1 type hormone, whilst the latter is going to leavd you starving, with insulin all over the show, knackered, having huge cravings and much more likely to end up over eating.

I'd say great if you can hit your daily fruit & veg, protein and fibre goals and manage to stay within weight loss cals, while having hearty and enjoyable meals.

Quick q though - is your pie really just the chicken, potato, veg, pastry? Is there no sauce and/or no oil used to cook things?

Some stock with like 2g of gravy granules as a sauce which I’ve never ever counted and likely never will because I can’t figure out how to get it accurate, I’ve found it’s so few calories it doesn’t 😂 no oil because I’ve always just found it adds calories with 0 benefit. The chicken gets baked in a tin foil parcel then shredded

I don't think there is any way that day comes to 1500 calories.
Your pie includes chicken veg and pastry, but how do you cook the chicken? Do you use oil? Is it poached in water and then just put dry under a pastry lid or do you make a gravy or white sauce? All these things add calories to the bare bones of a meal ( and flavour).

Meat spuds and veg for 2 meals a day is quite heavy, but if it works for you.

I think you should look at where I’ve provided the calorie breakdown for the day twice

Fair enough, thanks for sharing.

Your update about your DPs attitude to you having McDonalds etc is awful. Is he overweight himself, is he jealous of your loss?

When it comes to food yes. I’ve lost 130lbs and he’s always got something to say about what I’m eating. If we go out for a meal he’s always picking at it and saying I shouldn’t be eating it because I’ll put weight back on, or if we get a takeaway as a couple he expects me to eat a lot less than would be considered normal (I.e. if he wants a McDonald’s on the way home or something he’ll ask if I want something and then complain - if I want 6 nuggets he’ll say it should be 4, I should be getting a small chips etc)

He’d be an ex partner for me. Hes a controlling twat.

He’s become a “gym bro” and I’d say 75% of his diet is processed protein shakes

It's OK-ish, but very few green/red vegetables. Substitute sweet potaroes or butternut pumpkin for all the potatoes, as they are just as satiating but a helluva lot more value nutrition-wise.

Add in some (a lot) of broccoli or spinach, plus tomatoes, courgettes and peppers. Satiating, v low calories and you need the vitamins & variety!

Actually, potatoes are very very good at curbing hunger for few calories.

so what does this prince among men bring to the party? apart from being a nagging arsehole?

He says it’s too many carbs and too many hot meals.

It does seem like a lot of food for a diet…but if you keep your calories down then what’s the problem.

Personally I wouldn’t have more than one hot meal a day, and I would have skipped the pastry and the chocolate chips as they wouldn’t add anything in my mind, but ultimately it’s up to you to have what you feel helps you stick to the diet and lose weight.

Just be super careful that you’ve tracked and weighed everything correctly, there is a fine margin between losing and not losing when it come to your calories and miscounting something can add a couple of hundred on easily.

Good luck with the journey.

Ifyounevergiveup · 25/10/2026 15:20

Can I just say congratulations on the weight loss, you clearly put a lot of thought into what you’re doing, I’m 77lb down and still going. However, however…having lived with parents who hovered over every mouthful anybody ever ate, I have to say, is this a healthy joint interest with your DP (in which case absolutely fair enough) or is he policing you? Because it sounds to me like the latter, but as I say policing my food causes a very painful kneejerk reaction of overeating to rebel. I may be overidentifying, is what I’m saying, in which case forgive me, and either way bloody well done xx

Why is it ‘heavy’? As opposed to what?

Wait a second @jennyhumphreyseyeliner I’ve just noticed you’ve said you have lost 130lbs…so what does he think he is doing critiquing what you eat? You’ve already done an unreal job…he needs to pipe down

IStillHearTheWaves · 25/10/2026 15:22

Eat what you enjoy and what keeps you full. Don't swap your lunch for salad or things you find dull or unsatisfying!

FieryA · 25/10/2026 15:23

Too many hot meals- what does that mean? You can have hot food for each meal of the day. Perhaps potatoes two times is not needed.

This is the thing! In summer I’d happily eat a salad wrap for lunch but in the winter I just want nice warm meals. The weather is crap and I don’t really see how it’s any different to a chicken wrap that would provide the same cals and protein!

Agreed

HappyViewer · 25/10/2026 15:25

I can’t see why having potatoes twice in one day is any different than having bread with one meal
and potatoes with the other which is what a lot of people have.

If you are loosing weight eating this then that’s great and if you wanted it to be a bit healthier ditch the chocolate and maybe tweak the snacks.

How many calories does your body need to maintain your weight?

Far too much carbs

moderndilemma · 25/10/2026 15:25

Sorry, there's something seems a bit odd. OP has already lost more than 9 stone (no idea over what period) but is still losing 3 lbs per week? I don't know anyone with a weight loss trajectory like that.

Why is it odd and why would I lie?

I started at 26 stone, I’ve lost 9 stone over the last two and a half years or so. I go to the gym 5 days a week before work, stay hydrated and at the weekends prioritise getting out and about. I hit 10k steps everyday and can often have lower calorie days too!

LaurieFairyCake · 25/10/2026 15:27

Your diet is great and it’s completely amazing that you can lose weight on that. I’m dead envious as mine would be half that if I was trying to lose weight.

Your protein and balance is fantastic. Just wanted to wish you loads of luck with it Flowers

MargotLeadbetterOBE · 25/10/2026 15:27

Crikey. You’ve lost 9 stone?! Well you must be doing something right then. Is that with this way of eating?

Yep! I do have lower calorie days when I have made soup but I really couldn’t be bothered today 😂
