UK at war within 1000 days

Wes Streeting has said Britain must be ready for war in 1,000 days. This combined with the advice to stockpile while you can is highly inflammatory and worrying. AIBU to think that if there is a specific threat he should be specific? If it's a nuclear threat then he should say. We are lucky to have access to what is effectively a bunker but what can you do if you live in a bedsit in the London borough of suburbia?

Wes Streeting was really just stating the governments aspiration to be prepared for war in 3 years, nothing to do with expecting to be at war, and of course they will miss that deadline. It's more that we have reduced defence spending to a point where we are unprepared. But judging by Russia's inability to win in Ukraine and the huge amount of weapons they have used I think Russia is equally unprepared for a serious conflict in Western Europe.

I do think random terrorist attacks will continue and cyber attacks likely from Russia will continue and misinformation attacks like some of the recent threads on here such as prepare for an imminent disaster, war within three years and immigrants poised to rise up and kill everybody. All designed to destabilise the country and create fear and division.

The Muslim council of Britain opposed the repeal of clause 28.

Islam isn’t a race.

Furthermore, it’s actually racist of you to suggest all black and Asian people are Muslim or that all Muslims are black or Asian.

Take some time to educate yourself and free yourself from your ignorance.

Edited

Where did I suggest that? I just called you a racist because you are. You clearly think Islam is taking over the UK? you might want to stop watching GB news, moron!

You're right.
It's the ones I spoke of in my earlier post that could represent a danger.

I'm afraid I probably skimmed past your post. The repetitive hate for migrants is sickening so I avoid it where possible.

The enemy within is Tommy Robinson, Danny Tommo, Farage et al. So yes, they are worrying.

What is it with these idiots and the Tommy/ Tommo thing?

Is it possible that all this prepping talk is just a nudge for us to go out spending in order to save the economy? Didn't covid have the effect of a temporary uptick when everyone went out panic buying?

There will have been some spending on this stuff.

I am more interested in being prepared to ride out a disruption to IT systems and their impact on connected natonal suply infrastructure.

We used to get 2-3 major security patches a month, this number has now increased to about 30ish due to AI bots crawling the net connected systems and flagging them up. The delay between a flag and a fix can be quite long in terms of impact to internet connected systems and creates a window of opportunity for exploitation. The recent disruption caused by the PHP issue being an example. The Danfoss fridge controls being two examples of how ide spread disruption can be caused by one issue.

Internet connected everything is convenient / cheap but not so robust to support our current way of life.
Can you imagne some cashiers being able to quickly work out your change in their heads? I think those days are gone.

My partner is a network engineer for the NHS, when the wannacry cyber attack happened a few years back he and the small team he works with has the responsibility of getting about 6 hospital sites back up and running and it was not an easy task, that same small team have in recent times been made responsible for 200 clinical sites! I guess to cut down on IT staff salaries. Pretty much an entire county's worth of GP surgeries, hospitals, urgent treatment centres etc! I find that frightening if God forbid a cyber attack hits again.

No, not most. Just over half of 1,000 Muslim Britons surveyed. It is a concern, but important to be accurate.

Of the 1,000 Muslim Britons surveyed:

52% think that homosexuality should be illegal in Britain

47% said it is unacceptable for a gay or lesbian person to teach in school

23% would support there being areas of Britain in which Sharia law replaces British law

4% sympathise with people who take part in suicide bombing to fight injustice

39% believe that "wives should always obey their husbands"

86% feel a strong sense of belonging to Britain

94% feel they are able to freely practise their religion in the UK

ALL religions have, or have had, extremists who use religion as a foil to exert power, control and gain wealth. Even Buddhism has form historically. It’s not the religion - it’s how it’s misused.

They will do it through property taxes that pensioners can't pay. They will take a charge on their properties which they will then sell to banks so they can give more money to the work-shy.

In your fantasy land, perhaps.

i would definitely read it from another source rather than the Daily Telegraph

Most of your comments on this and similar threads are deliberately worded to try and stir people up against certain groups. So far, apart from the UK government, we've had Muslims, immigrants and now it's the "work shy." I see through you like a plate glass window which is why I have reported to MN.

It's a good job you picked 20-25 years and not 50, or the answer would have been Catholic.

Exactly. And I’m a Catholic saying this.

99.9999999999% of Muslims are peace loving and have no intention of being involved in terror attacks.

cardibach · 25/10/2026 13:03

Livelovebehappy · 25/10/2026 12:27

Nope. Islamist extremists are the greater threat. There’s only so many we can let in before it will create huge problems. They’re determined in their goal, and death doesn’t frighten them. We have people being ushered in who hate women, who hate the way westerners conduct themselves. It’s like a ticking timebomb. Tommy Robinson et al are amateurs in comparison.

Edited

Extremists are a threat. I’d say we have more right wing ones than Islamist ones. And nobody is ‘ushering’ extremists in (other than Robinson who is an Irish citizen - we seem fairly happy to usher him in).

BerryTwister · 25/10/2026 13:04

Having had a chunk of my teens years blighted by terror over a nuclear war, I vowed not to stress about this kind of thing again. There’s nothing we can actually do about it, and I’m certainly not going to fill my garage with bottled water.

It reminds me of the dialogue about Harry’s “dark side” in the film When Harry Met Sally. Harry says “when the shit comes down, I’m gonna be prepared and you’re not”, and Sally says “in the meantime you’re going to ruin your life waiting for it”!

It’s very convenient timing because of the boycott supermarkets on October 28th movement that’s gathering momentum on social media.
