UK at war within 1000 days

HumbleStumble · 25/10/2026 10:45

Wes Streeting has said Britain must be ready for war in 1,000 days. This combined with the advice to stockpile while you can is highly inflammatory and worrying. AIBU to think that if there is a specific threat he should be specific? If it's a nuclear threat then he should say. We are lucky to have access to what is effectively a bunker but what can you do if you live in a bedsit in the London borough of suburbia?

Chill. Have a glass of wine. Maybe even a KitKat.

The Muslim council of Britain opposed the repeal of clause 28.

And white British politicians wrote it 8n the first place.
Most Muslims would criminalise homosexuality? I’m not so sure. But since they are a tiny minority of our population that’s not really a worry. There are a lot of white ‘Christian’ homophobes anout too.

RaggedRocks · 25/10/2026 13:07

Sprostongreeen · 25/10/2026 13:03

Exactly. And I’m a Catholic saying this.

99.9999999999% of Muslims are peace loving and have no intention of being involved in terror attacks.

They still don't want their kids taught by gays. What about the Yorkshire teacher and the prophet cartoons who had to go into hiding?

I think there is a sense of imminent danger coming from all quarters. There’s the obvious climate change situation, which has ramped up over the last couple of years. America is pulling away from Europe - whatever people think about the USA, they are vital allies. There’s the continuing threat from Russia and Putin which is escalating. Europe is being infiltrated by religious extremists intent on destroying our way of life. Cyber threat is very real. Civil unrest spreading throughout Europe. Veiled threats from other hostile countries on the fringes - China, North Korea, Iran/Middle East. Something is going to happen but we don’t know the catalyst yet as to what’s going to implode first.

Trying to sound like. a normal geezer. Failing.

The Muslim council of Britain opposed the repeal of clause 28.

So did:
Many Tories.
The Secondary Heads Association
NASUWT
The Salvation Army
the Christian Institute
Christian Action, Research and Education,
The Daily Mail,
The Sun,
The Daily Telegraph
The Daily Record.

Don’t forget AI and the increasing risk of layoffs.

"Russian tanks rolling across our borders".

Which borders are these then Wes? The famous Welsh border with Belarus?

They would have had to roll across a lot of other borders first before they roll through the Channel Tunnel, so it won’t be a surprise, I think there would be time to dig a tank pit or two and find/build/dig a bunker.

cardibach · 25/10/2026 13:09

This may be the case. Have they asked specifically practicing members of other religions their view? I suspect a higher proportion of them than average would feel the same way. But, again, Muslims aren’t in a position to enact laws. They are a minority.

Livelovebehappy · 25/10/2026 13:10

cardibach · 25/10/2026 13:03

Extremists are a threat. I’d say we have more right wing ones than Islamist ones. And nobody is ‘ushering’ extremists in (other than Robinson who is an Irish citizen - we seem fairly happy to usher him in).

Comparing Tommy Robinson with Islamist extremists is chalk and cheese. On so many levels. I’m no fan of a Tommy Robinson, and I’m absolutely not in fear of him. There’s not going to be a ‘war’ on the back of anything he says or does. Islamic extremists on the other hand…

Are they? Surely the ones coming here do so to get away from fundamentalist governments? You understand refugees are running away from the people you are scared of?

It's a good job you picked 20-25 years and not 50, or the answer would have been Catholic.

I’d say more recent history is what matters most here. Counter-terrorism efforts and risk assessments have to focus on active, current threats.

‘They’? Have you spoken to ‘them’ all?

Please don’t allow yourself to be manipulated. Watch the Social Reckoning at a cinema near you for a start.

Plenty of Christians don’t want their kids taught by gay people.

The labour party has to instill some fear into their voters to make defense spending palatable.

OrganicDecafEarlGrey · 25/10/2026 13:19

LillyPeacePlant · 25/10/2026 12:01

Why mention you have a bunker? That is a twat move. Start a panic inducing thread and then finish it with ‘oh but I don’t need to worry suckers!’

Realistically, I don't think people are going to be surviving a nuclear attack in a bunker. It's just putting off the inevitable.

I do now have about 25 tins of Stamford Street baked beans though so I'll be ok.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 25/10/2026 13:19

I think mumsnet HQ should edit the alarmist title of this thread.

I think people wouldn’t mind an uplift without the war and fear headlines. Perhaps it’s for his own party, ie Healey and the budget.

Blatant and dishonest scaremongering. For the avoidance of doubt, I mean you, not Streeting, who you have gone out of your way to misquote.

So you're presented with statistics about how many diverse groups didn't want children taught by gay teachers but it didn't suit so you're back to dinghies and Muslims again?

Charlize43 · 25/10/2026 13:21

I feel the most imminent danger is that we have entered an era of amoral corporate greed. The gap between those that have and those that do not is widening at an alarming rate.

For example, Thames Water hike up their water bills so the CEO can give himself a 4 million pound bonus - at the expense of millions of families being pushed into poverty.

The government sits by and does nothing about it apart from award Politicians above the board pay rises (5%) to countered the Cost of Living Crisis. I get the impression that Labour wants more and more people on Welfare, reliant on the state and therefore increasing their voting demographic.

I was a child in the late 70s with the Winter of Discontent, but I feel that things have never been so bad as they are now. All my money goes on paying bills, the price of food is extortionate, Councils keep imposing more and more costs, I can't afford basics like to keep my house warm, Everything is on the up, except wages.

You need to have a delve into which demographics are most likely to vote for which party. Plenty of information out there.
