UK at war within 1000 days

Wes Streeting has said Britain must be ready for war in 1,000 days. This combined with the advice to stockpile while you can is highly inflammatory and worrying. AIBU to think that if there is a specific threat he should be specific? If it's a nuclear threat then he should say. We are lucky to have access to what is effectively a bunker but what can you do if you live in a bedsit in the London borough of suburbia?

I think it is important to quote what he actually said:

"The gravest dangers of the 20th century are returning, armed with the technologies of the 21st. But the threat to Britain is not simply one of conventional warfare, or Russian tanks rolling across our borders. It is also the growing threat of state sponsored terrorism, sabotage and hostile acts designed to disrupt our lives, undermine our security and spread fear in our communities"...

"Our adversaries’ willingness to harm us is not new. What has changed is their capacity. By 2030 their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win. This Government will make sure it is mission accomplished."

I don't think you will need that bunker.

"Russian tanks rolling across our borders".

Which borders are these then Wes? The famous Welsh border with Belarus?

🤣 good point. I do think he could have worded it better.

ColdAsAWitches · 25/10/2026 10:59

Given that he specifically said that the threat to Britain is NOT one of Russian tanks rolling across our borders but terrorism and cyber-war, I don't really see why that's so funny?

Because it's an utterly preposterous statement in any context, so he really didn't need to dismiss it to begin with and only made a fool of himself by implying it even could have been a threat at any point in time.

He might as well have mentioned that we're not at risk of flying saucer attack by Martians.

Yes, that is what he meant but it could have been better phrased.

Not another one of these threads! This sort of comment about 3 years time is NOT NEW. Use your common sense, and do some wider reading instead of coming on here and stirring trouble.

mumumental · 25/10/2026 11:01

Well he should bloody well stop getting us involved in them, then.

Edited

I do wonder if the Telegraph did some sneaky editing of the piece.

The greatest danger to national security in this country is already here and seemingly being continually welcomed with open arms

What has he got us involved in exactly?

Attictroll · 25/10/2026 11:02

1000 days is about 3 years so not panicking today. The nutters of Trump, putin and tech advances mean wise to prep but its three years so mid range prediction…

Trump is still in the States as far as I'm aware.

Yes, we should not help others and should acquiesce to the Putins and Trumps of this world. Is that what you want?

There are so many scaremongering threads on MN right now. It is very odd.

Hmmmm, one might even dare to suggest....orchestrated and intentional 😉

Funny how there was a noticeable lull immediately after Ukraine stonked the known bot/troll farms.

What's that then? Do tell us.

Usou · 25/10/2026 11:06

The most serious threats to the UK are already within our borders.

I wonder if the Russian military will be capable of defending its own borders by the end of the Ukraine debacle.

No doubt someone will be along soon to tell you that could never happen on MN. MNHQ has said so etc.

Why feign ignorance? Seems a bit craven.

bababamama · 25/10/2026 11:08

thanks @TemperanceWest

cherry picking one line as some posters and doing changes the context completely. He clearly says that the risks are not conventional warfare so why are posters here picking those lines.

the bigger risks would be eg state sponsored hackers getting into the goods distribution systems - we saw what happened to M&S, which isn’t a key player with food, imagine it was Tesco! Behind the scenes huge amounts of work goes on to prevent such a situation occurring

Why doesn't the pp speak plainly about what they mean by "greatest danger to national security"? Seems a bit craven.
