If the UK is on the brink of war, we are screwed.

Starmer's govt was notably worse than this one. That said, I think Labour has moved too far away from supporting the dignity of work, and the right to be paid for that work, and is now a welfare first party. This govt is not reversing that trend. Their plans for dealing with cost of living are massively at odds with wealth creation and the rights of the individual as we have historically understood them in this country. I was a lifelong Labour voter but I think I'm done.

BIossomtoes · 26/10/2026 09:14

Roads are indeed the responsibility of local councils which were starved of funding during the Tory years.

Monty36 · 26/10/2026 09:29

If we are vulnerable it is not because of one Government. It is because of years, decades of complacency. Of relying on others for our fuel. Of relying on the US to defend us. And years of downsizing our defence instead of investing in it.
Decades of importing. Decades of not being self reliant enough.

All that has to change. Times have changed. Attitudes have to with it.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 26/10/2026 13:00

Not a very good try, Kemi/Nigel. I can think of a number of worse governments from the past.

Erm. Yes I know you weren’t. I was saying that I agree with YOU that Russia has been “dicking” with the UK for years. And my point is that the current government is such a shambles that it makes us extremely vulnerable to attack now.

you are being very rude and condescending btw

You deserve the condescension as you haven't provided a single coherent argument for your ridiculous opening post.

Edamcheese · 26/10/2026 14:51

Again in today’s daily mail on page 10 .:Streeting : we have 1,000 days to prepare for war. The defence secretary who last week warned families to stock pile tinned food and water, said his top priority is to make sure this country is ready to fight and win a war by 2030. What does it all mean then as I read this as a real threat.

HenriettaHippopotamus · 26/10/2026 14:55

If only the competent governments of the likes of Liz Truss and Boris Johnson were in charge! 😂

TRS20 · 26/10/2026 14:56

Don’t read the Daily Mail if you want to know what’s going on.
the threats from all sorts of things have increased, it’s true, and the govt is doing the right thing suggesting households have supplies to see them through a few days.
I think this government is doing a substantially better job than many before

I’m not saying it’s the fault of this government but if we are in a world crisis, we are basically being governed by a bunch of amateurs

So who would you rather see govern?

Are you saying that ALL councils were starved funding during the Tory years, or just councils that weren’t Tory?

GettingThereEveryDay · 25/10/2026 01:49

So the 3 day emergency prep is not about the threat of supplies being cut off by Putin?

You don't think there will be several hundreds of households very happy today that they had the sense to have some supplies in, as their power has been disrupted by the weekend's storms?

BIossomtoes · 26/10/2026 09:14

The roads round here are an absolute disgrace. The Reform lead council is doing nothing about it. It's their job, and they are failing

Allseeingallknowing · 26/10/2026 15:24

I know this has been discussed before , but today it was confirmed those on the new state pension won’t pay any tax if their income goes over the tax threshold, but those on the old pension plus a smaller private one will pay tax. Ok, it may not be a large amount, though in cases of deferred pension it might be, but this decision will only bring resentment, as it is unfair and creates a two tier system. Everyone should have been put on the new pension when it started, it might even have been cheaper to do this and avoid pension credit and the freebies that go with it.

Pathetic isn’t it

Yes they are amateurs, as are most politicians. It’s scary. And British politicians get less training than almost anywhere else. On a visit many years ago to Westminster, I asked if there was a form of induction course for new MPs to try to ensure that they understood basic constitutional law, ethics, the committee system, the rules applicable to them in respect of expenses etc - I was told that there was no such thing…..and that the individual parties ‘might’ arrange something.

I’d like to think that most of the upper echelons at least have some form of management training, but crisis management and political strategy ? Forget it.

I’m hoping that the civil service etc contains some sensible individuals and liaison with the military and others to try to think ahead and have plans to keep us safe and functioning in different forms of crisis.

I couldn’t watch more than the first episode of the recent ‘War Game’ series on Netflix featuring Michael Gove, Sturgeon and others. Yes, it was only TV, but I found it both infuriating and terrifying the way they all kept repeating in different words the scenario in which we’d found ourselves, rather than move on with urgency to action plan! More interested in all having their say rather than doing anything productive.

RedTagAlan · 26/10/2026 02:08

Who do you want in charge then ?

I was skimming through the news just now. The politicians are talking about some budget things.

Labour - Money to tackle homelessness.

Tories - our energy plan will cut bills.

Reform - We will legalize Imperial units.

But they show no desire to cut the welfare bill , or stop the dinghies things that are uppermost in the minds of many.

itsnearly2027 · 26/10/2026 15:29

Are you saying that ALL councils were starved funding during the Tory years, or just councils that weren’t Tory?

All councils have gradually had more and more responsibilities that used to be part of central government stuff pushed down to them, with less and less central funding.

That has taken decades to get as far as it is now, through many different governments of various colours, but overall the direction has been pretty constant.

BIossomtoes · 26/10/2026 19:36

Tiggy2000 · 26/10/2026 15:14

All of them. They didn’t care what colour they were.

GettingThereEveryDay · 25/10/2026 01:49

So the 3 day emergency prep is not about the threat of supplies being cut off by Putin?

And you think a Putin sympathiser would be a better option? We'd be sold for parts... Russians don't respect traitors.

HisStericalTestes · 26/10/2026 19:45

Boris? Lettuce? Do you have amnesia?

Yodeldodeldo · 26/10/2026 19:46

If I end up sitting in a house with no electric, heating or water, and I later find out they had a generator at number 10 with a hot tub party, mulled wine and a cheese fondu evening....sending out an intern with a sledge to the Spar shop for more beers...
At that point I will declare them the worst government ever.

OonaStubbs · 27/10/2026 12:50

At least they are doing something about the price of marmalade and gherkins, I know that was a pressing concern for many at the moment

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/10/2026 12:59

This thread is bonkers

We’re not under threat of war because of this (very new) govt- it’s because of years of ignoring and underestimating the threat from russia, and to a lesser extent other authoritarian states.

And because of not realising our best and truest allies are in Europe, not the unreliable US.

John Major signing the Budapest memorandum with the US after persuading Ukraine to give up nukes - that was an early mistake - we actually needed the first country russia would invade on its way into Europe to have nukes.

Constant appeasement of putin from 2000 onwards is also at fault - particularly completely ignoring the invasion of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine, also their invasion of Georgia and several other neighbours.

We should also have been more aware for the past 80 years that the freedom of Western Europe should be left in the hands of the US to guarantee- we should have made sure we could defend ourselves without reliance on them.
