If the UK is on the brink of war, we are screwed.

We're not on the brink of war at all and we've had far worse governments than this one.

This.

WarmHiker · 25/10/2026 23:33

Since 1997 each government has been worse than the last one. This country is now a joke in every sense. Crumbling infrastructure, sky high taxes, disastrous economy, out of control public spending and welfare, woeful defence capability, capital flight and brain drain, open borders.

But our prime minister has proclaimed that he will ban loud music on buses. So all is well. Proclaimed, mind you. Not actually done anything about it. He’s that inept. Completely out of his depth. The country needs a statesman and this is what we got. A guy who bangs on about buses all day long like a parish councillor.

Worse that one run by Tuss? You must have very short memory.

Yes, worse than Truss. The gilt yields are literally your evidence for that.

MyDenimKoala · 25/10/2026 23:39

Can we have some more AIBU about the Tudors please?

So the 3 day emergency prep is not about the threat of supplies being cut off by Putin?

Re 3 day prep does anybody know how long Aldi packet tomato soup will last?

If the worst comes to the worse. I plan to get a ton of it at the end of the week. Just to be on the safe side with a gallon pack of bottled water.

WarmHiker · 25/10/2026 23:34

Yes, worse than Truss. The gilt yields are literally your evidence for that.

Comparing the two numbers without context is highly misleading because the driving forces behind them are entirely different.
Treating them as the same type of market signal misses how bond markets actually function.
During The Truss crisis markets penalised the UK specifically because of un-forecasted tax-cuts threatened economic stability.
Today's yields are elevated because the global baseline for interest rates has shifted. Central banks worldwide, including the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, have held interest rates higher for longer to fight sticky inflation. UK gilts are simply moving in lockstep with global trends rather than reflecting isolated British instability.

Have you compared our taxes to other countries?
We don't have open borders so that's just tiktok thinking.
As for music on buses/trains - just because there's big global stuff going on, doesn't mean the little stuff can't make a difference. As for it not happening yet, things take some time to go through, quite rightly so otherwise a prime minister just just decide things on a whim and put any old stuff into place.
We absolutely don't need a 'statesman' - what makes you think we do?

My god Raggedyrockd the political illiteracy on this thread.
No lessons from history on here. Just as well we weren’t thinking like that in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and Hitler has assured Baldwin he had no intention of doing that.
Just think we our grandparents could all have been enslaved in factories and mines helping German war effort. Perhaps you should watch The Man in the High Castle on Netflix to see what it would have been like.

Did you mean neville Chamberlain?

Who do you want in charge then ?

I was skimming through the news just now. The politicians are talking about some budget things.

Labour - Money to tackle homelessness.

Tories - our energy plan will cut bills.

Reform - We will legalize Imperial units.

OonaStubbs · 26/10/2026 02:23

We need a government that will cut public spending to what we can actually afford, rather than getting us further into debt trying to keep people happy with freebies.

XigDoop · 26/10/2026 02:39

Russia or Trump/Netanyahu sabre rattling over the Falklands? It's all very depressing.

I’m not saying it’s the fault of this government but if we are in a world crisis, we are basically being governed by a bunch of amateurs

Utter nonsense

We need a highly educated population with the skill of critical thinking - including understanding of global contexts and what is (or is not) within the gift of a government to control.

And I love the public transport headphones initiative. I am on it a lot and it will make a positive difference to the quality of my daily life. That stuff is important alongside stuff that will take months and years to change.

RaggedRocks · 25/10/2026 01:28

I just struggle to understand why we should give a fuck about Ukraine or Poland even. Russia is no threat to this country. Why our are leaders so obsessed with the Russia/Ukraine conflict.

Maybe cos history tells us that the invading types tend not to stop?
So it's Ukraine now and then the next country.
Also a little suspicion that three major world leaders (Putin, Trump, Xi) would like a world where big countries can do what they like a long as they don't get in each other's way. It would suit them very well.
We have always been at war with Eastasia, as a very wise writer once said.

butternutsquashed82 · 26/10/2026 06:52

No I don’t think it’s the worst government ever. But to be fair to the OP, the government have been asking us to ‘be prepared’ and given no real context and then yesterday they said that we need to be prepared for war in 1000 days! With our defence budget barely registering and our armed forces in a fragile state, I think that’s why the OP is saying we’re screwed! And to be fair, if we did go to war we would be!

butternutsquashed82 · 26/10/2026 06:54

@RedTagAlando you ever sleep 😂 or do you just spend hours defending the Labour Party on every political post 😂😂

Where am I defending labour ? It's another Party I am interesting in. Specifically challenging the nonsense they spout.

I don't see what my sleep has to do with anything.

And the world is in financial turmoil now so the situation isn’t comparable.

You are being ridiculous. Do not talk politics if you do not understand what you are communicating.

lljkk · 26/10/2026 09:01

OP does a good job in showing anyone can complain. Complainers have no solutions, they just like to stir.

Tiggy2000 · 26/10/2026 09:07

Fuckmyliferightnow · 25/10/2026 01:44

The reason I can no longer get an NHS dentist= The Tories.
The reason the roads are covered in pot holes= Tory neglect.
The reason I have to wait 2 months for a blood test= Tory cuts (it was 3 but 2 since Labour came in).
Would you like more examples, OP?
If Reform ever get in, we’re double fucked!

I don’t think it’s quite a simple as that. The changes to dental contracts that were brought in in 2006 (Labour) did a huge amount of damage, NHS dentistry no longer paid enough to actually cover the costs of the treatment, hence so many dentists withdrawing from the contracts, this has been exacerbated by the closure of dental surgeries during Covid, which was partially down to Tory policies. Repair of Potholes on local roads are down to local councils highways departments, so very much dependent on who runs your local council, motorways and some A roads are managed by National Highways so there is some government responsibility there. I must be fortunate re blood tests as can generally access via my GP within a week or ten days.
