To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

Yes it's getting pretty wild here too on the border in Cumbria!

Same here in north Yorks 🧡

I am fine. I’ve had bloods, my kidneys are fine. People are so bothered by someone drinking a lot of water.

Are you drinking that much because you think forcing yourself to drink that much is healthy or because you're really thirsty? Because if it's the latter you might want to ask your doctor about diabetes insipidus. Being really thirsty and needed to wee really often (which going once an hour is) are the main symptoms. It's not a medical emergency, but it will cause damage to your body over time.

Have you literally never had a power cut where you live? Shops don’t stay open.

Smaller shops do tend to stay open, ime. As do takeouts that can cook with gas. You need cash, of course, or a good level of trust with the shopkeepers. I borrowed dog food and a bottle of vodka from our local shop last time we had a power cut.

My friend keeps her shop open and uses camping lights to light the shop. The chippy next door to her and the pizza shop a few doors up also tend to stay open.

Some larger chains have generators to keep the power on during power cuts.

It still doesn’t specify what we’re preparing for!

You want them to tell you to prep for war. If a nuclear bomb goes off we will all die. You won't need food, water, or anything else. You certainly need to calm down. I live in the US and I'm prepping for winter, snow storms, and the power going out.

Last time we had a power cut of any note must have been twenty years ago!

@sookiestjames77 I’m guessing that you’re very young because there was a lot of worry about nuclear attack in the 80s.

I do feel as if you’re a bit unaware, though there’s been lots of weather incidents across the UK in the last few years, there’s been posts on here from people who were without water for awhile.

I think the point of ID is more about proving who you are if you needed to collect medication in a place that can’t just check you on the system

Sleeping bag is probably more about if your heating goes out.

I don’t think they have handled this well because historically other countries do this as normal whereas to us it looks new

A lot of people do it anyway, though

I mean with ID, you would just grab your wallet for example.

I’m somewhere in the middle

I understand why you’re worried about a lot of what they’ve said is just common sense anyway.

it may look new to cough some people cough...but the advice has been out there for years. I remember having a conversation at work about it around 2005. We had a locum from NZ with us and she was amazed that we didn't do things like keep a bucket and binbags to use instead of a toilet. She said a good trick is to line the existing loo with a binbag and remove it after use because this is easier for adults to balance on than a bucket. For real poshness apparently you keep a stock of absorbent cat litter and scoop some into the bag to soak up any wee that the loo paper can't absorb.

OP works for the NHS...I would hope they've looked into this properly in that case...

Jesus fucking Christ. I drink that much because that’s what I drink. It’s not a big deal and I’ve not got diabetes. My HBA1C was 30 last time it was checked! I just stay hydrated.

I understood it was to do with potential loss of power as a few fairly heavy storms have been forecast. Around my way we've had a few trees down, so there's potential for power lines to go too if high winds continue.

I do think that messaging should be clearer though. Evidently the way things have been worded are worrying people unnecessarily.

Only if they are already suffering clinical levels of anxiety and/or have no common sense or almost no general knowledge.

sookiestjames77 · 24/10/2026 18:20

We've had a few bad ones in recent years, oddly, mostly due to heat rather than wind/storms. You can tell the ones that are going to be bad because cell service goes down too, so you know most of the town is affected and not just a few streets.

In those ones, we wait 15-20 minutes, and if the power doesn't come back, we grab the dogs, check on elderly relatives, stop at a local shop for alcohol if it is a weekend, and head back home for a garden fire, drinks, and downloaded music using power banks to keep phones alive.

What we don't do is start preparing for Armageddon.

We've been lucky to only have power outages for a night at most. Some parts of town were left without power for days in the last one. Local churches and community centers quickly stepped up and offered people a place to charge phones and power banks and grab a hot meal for those without gas. It was all very calm and civilised, with not a single looter in sight.

MrsPapillon · 24/10/2026 18:29

LBFseBrom · 24/10/2026 16:30

I've had no such messaging.

We weren’t literally sent a message. It’s just been all over the media for the past few days because the government updated their website with the same information that was put out two years ago, but everyone ignored. The press have been questioning members of the cabinet about it so the information has gone mainstream. People who keep abreast with current affairs mostly had been aware of it for a long time already.

You'll possibly have heard of the big council estate where I grew up then, it was quite notorious!

I've lived in Sussex for 35 years. I can only remember two occasions when snow has settled here in that time, and on one of those it had thawed by the next day.

We rarely get a frost, I think we only had two all last winter. And they probably didn't even get a frost down in the town centre, it's 250-300 feet higher up where I live.

Can't begin to remember things like that!

Although, did you go to Riddlesdown High School in Purley, Croydon? Kate Moss did, apparently!

No, not really, I was genuinely looking to find out if you had mentioned your occupation elsewhere-and having found it, it simply doesn't make sense to me that someone who works for a government department can start a thread so full of exclamation marks and panic at something that's been all over the media recently. I also feel there are elements to some of your posts that want others to blame the government in some way.

Thankyou BIWI. Because there have been way too many threads recently aimed at stirring panic, or questioning thr governments motives (I'm no big fan of any government to be honest, but this is a different issue to me) some of which have been recognised as bots.
