To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

Too much water can actually cause the brain to swell and its extremely dangerous. I actually think it was a bit irresponsible of the government to suggest we stock up, because as we saw in 2020, people were clearing the shelves through panic. On a lighter note, I will leave a video which summed up those crazy times.

Agree @oldtiredcyclist I can't believe that ANYone would consume 5 litres of water a day! (10 and a half pints!)

And yeah, it's pretty daft of the Government to issue this warning, as it IS scaremongering, and will result in panic buying and the shelves being cleared.

The OP's posts have proven it's scaremongering as she's freaking out!

lol. Lmao even.

Agreed - I think a lot of people assume everyone is like them and would be surprised just how many people couldn't withstand a couple of days fully off grid.

Meanwhile, dickheads are going to panic buy. Better they do it now because they've briefly had a run in with common sense, when supply chains are resilient and shelves quick to replenish, than during a mass banking outage or a Spain-style power cut.

How will they panic buy if the grid is down?

Why are you so determined to refute the evidence about the risks of drinking 5 litres a day??

Sorry to pop your bubble. About 50% are prepared and generally sensible.

That's what I said! I think you quoted the wrong poster.

How come you found yourself in an apocalyptic situation for 7 days?

Power outage for seven days - a badly timed storm/powercut

Even if you live on top of a hill you can flood. Its called standing water. Even hills have dips.

Not sure she/he is actually freaking out to be honest.

Spain saw huge amounts of panic buying during the outage earlier this year. Disruption doesn't always affect everywhere all at once, can have intermittency and when there isn't immediate clarity about causes or likely impact, people don't act rationally - and similarly you can't always predict how businesses will behave.

I’m ignoring it. I ignored it during Covid to my brief detriment in that DH had to drive for miles to find loo roll and hand wash but that’s as bad as it got. I’m not filling my home with loads of random crap unless the government actually decide to tell us there’s an imminent threat and we all must do this, which they won’t because there isn’t.

It won't be random crap if it's things that you eat anyway. We haven't got sleeping bags and I'm not going out and buying any. If there's a power cut we have enough blankets and duvets to keep us warm. I'm also not buying a wind up radio as they're rubbish.

CustardySergeant · 24/10/2026 17:26

I'm puzzled that we are advised to have sleeping bags and copies of important documents and ID. That sounds as though we won't be in our own homes. What on earth is expected?

If your street floods you might want to grab passports, birth certificates etc before you leave.

I am fine. I’ve had bloods, my kidneys are fine. People are so bothered by someone drinking a lot of water.

Yes. That's literally all they are bothered about.

madaboutpurple · 24/10/2026 18:02

I live near 2 branches of Asda. Both of which would only close if it was a drastic reason. I have got tea, coffee and milk and more importantly nice chocolate biscuits. i have a good stash of chocolate. If we are left with no gas, I would offer a neighbour some beef burgers as long as they would cook one for DH and myself. Other than that I am not bothering. We have a lovely fish and chip shop nearby and I am sure they would attempt to stay open. I am ignoring the request. If people do drink they might as well continue. I would not want people to stop doing something they like doing.

It’s not because they think we won’t be in our own homes, but because we might need to evacuate.

  • they’ve advised a Go-bag with documents and clothes etc in case we need to evacuate.
  • they’ve advised us to stock up on water in case water supplies are disrupted.
  • they’ve advised us to buy wind up analogue radios in case there is no power and they need to make public service announcements.
  • they’ve advised us to buy torches and candles so we’d have lights in case of a power cut
  • theyve advised us to buy sleeping bags because it’s a lot warmer than sleeping under a duvet if the gas runs out in January.
  • they’ve advised us to keep cash in case the ATMs and banking services stop working
  • they’ve advised us to buy extra food in case shops can’t open, supplies are disrupted or just simply that we won’t have to go outside in a bloody hurricane
  • etc
  • etc
  • etc

Can people not get it through their heads that the government is not expecting ALL these scenarios to actually happen! They’re just giving sensible advice to people who are too hard of thinking to have mitigated any risks for themselves before now. They are covering all bases.

PreparationPreventsPPP · 24/10/2026 18:03

We are way behind other EU nations and world on this.
Apparntly it was supposed to be done ages ago but Burnham didn't want a negative start to his premiership.

It's sensible to have a few days supplies surely.
For us water has been the biggest one and we have a camping stove

Have you literally never had a power cut where you live? Shops don’t stay open.

And even if they're on a part of the grid that's still functioning or have a separate power supply, those shelves will empty fast and likely be hard to replenish.

Periperi2025 · 24/10/2026 18:11

If you are really worried about starving buy a bag of dog kibble to stash away and once you've not used it for a year donate it to a dog shelter, the shelters will love have millions of bags of food donated.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/10/2026 18:13

Zov · 24/10/2026 17:16

It is scaremongering (IMO) to tell people they NEED to do it (as if something is about to happen.) All the Government message has done is make people freak out, (as the OP is doing!)

The shelves will be bloody empty again, just like they were during Covid.

If they didn't give the advice and something happen you'd be crying that the government should have warned you.🙄

Where are you that people are panicking? The only panic I've seen is on Mnet.

leperol · 24/10/2026 18:16

Prep for three days without gas or electric for cooking, and water. That'll cover most things, and know where your passport is.

I think the messaging was all over the place, and has caused a lot of worry for many. They should re issue the message with simple, easy to follow guidance, and most importantly - the reason behind it please, to allay the fears of war and a rogue plague being let loose 😊

Yes it's getting pretty wild here too on the border in Cumbria!

Same here in north Yorks 🧡
