To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

Within 1–2 days: noticeable shortages of fresh and popular products.
Within 3–5 days: potentially widespread shortages, depending on existing stocks and customer behaviour.
After a week: serious disruption to normal grocery shopping, with availability varying considerably by product and location.

yup we saw this when lockdown kicked in. We also saw that the situation worsened when people with no stock of anything panic bought.

They have to be vague, as there is no specific thread. But given what's happening the world, there are various things that might impact on us - weather, El Niňo, wars, cyber attacks. So it's GENERAL advice that it's a good idea to have 3 days' worth of food and water.

Not sure why people find it so difficult to believe/accept that. Other countries in the world have been preparing like this for a long time.

When my mum heard it, she checked the torches, bought batteries, hand warmers and more candles. My dad has bought loads of biscuits (that's his excuse) and is filling empty milk containers with water.

They asked me to get them battery tea lights and glow sticks for the stairs and doors. Theyre in their 80s. This isn't their first time at this rodeo, they welcomed the reminder.

Because some of us don’t live rurally. We live with dozens of well stocked shops within a mile radius.

Good for you.

Fat lot of good those 'dozens of shops within a mile radius' will be to you if they're all shut though...

If the shops are shut for several months, we'll all be coming for your 3 month hoard...

I think it would take them a long time to get here from Moscow

The messaging for this campaign has been dip fed for a number of weeks now and a lot of people have been slowly and quietly making sure that they have suitable supplies. This sort of advice is nothing new and standard for other countries. A lot of people already have a decent amount of basic supplies including food already, lighting sources etc as a matter of course.

We only need to have seen threads on here to know that inclement weather, or a burst pipe can cause chaos. If everyone who can does their bit, relief efforts can be targeted at those most in need and it takes pressure off the wider system. It’s also been clear that we can’t always rely on relief efforts meeting the needs of everyone, or in a timely manner. If you have ever been in that situation you tend to put things in place to make sure you will be more comfortable if anything of that nature happens again.

Storm season is already upon us and thousands across the country have been left without power in the last few days. There were power cuts where I live and we were not in one of the weather warning areas. El Niño is of concern this winter and it’s not yet known as to how that may impact us. There have already been cyber attacks with varying level of disruption.

If you can afford to do so, why wouldn’t you ensure that you and your family can manage for a few days without having to try and start shopping, or need the input of others to keep you as comfortable and safe as possible when with a bit of thought, you could have done it yourself?

I've never even seen this advice on the actual news or TV or radio or something. And I read/watch/listen to the news every day. I've only ever seen it on forums.

Discosnake · 26/10/2026 17:02

Many have mentioned El Nino. It's just El Nino it seems. It is going to be super El Nino possibly stronger than in 1800s.

Google - news - shiws it has been everywhere. As well as couple of months ago.

RumbleMum · 26/10/2026 17:10

I know this kind of things feels scary, but tbf they've been really clear on what it's about: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/households-encouraged-to-take-small-simple-steps-to-stay-prepared-in-an-emergency

It's about improving the country's resilience to unexpected events (they can't say specifically which events, because the point is they're unexpected, but they have given some examples) and reducing pressure on the emergency services. I heard the security minister on the news saying exactly this.

Seems perfectly sensible to me, though I appreciate it can increase anxiety.

Households encouraged to take small, simple steps to stay prepared in an emergency

Households are being encouraged to take a few simple steps to stay prepared if everyday services are temporarily disrupted, under updated advice published today.
