To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

I’ll say what I want, thank you. It’s really fucking weird to do it.

You've said so three times, and no, it isn't.

It’s actually really, really strange to look at people’s posting history to try and use it against them.

I agree. I don't think MN should allow it the whole point of the site is annoymity.

It’s not weird at all. It gives important context before you waste time with some posters. If you have nothing to hide, why would you care?

I live near 2 branches of Asda. Both of which would only close if it was a drastic reason. I have got tea, coffee and milk and more importantly nice chocolate biscuits. i have a good stash of chocolate. If we are left with no gas, I would offer a neighbour some beef burgers as long as they would cook one for DH and myself. Other than that I am not bothering. We have a lovely fish and chip shop nearby and I am sure they would attempt to stay open. I am ignoring the request. If people do drink they might as well continue. I would not want people to stop doing something they like doing.

How would your neighbours cook the beef burgers?
And actually, asda would shut pretty promptly for any water, power or banking outages.

EverybodyLTB · 24/10/2026 18:57

Ffs has nobody got any critical thinking left? If you live on a hill or live next to the best Asda in the world, crack on and just absolutely do NOT go bonkers and get three days of tins in. Save yourself the trauma of this silly scaremongering as you’re never ever going to encounter a problem. Does nobody interact with or explore or watch the news relating to anywhere else? Anyone who hasn’t had a power cut in twenty years, lovely 👍🏼

People need to realise how weak our supply chains, our gas supply etc are and how vulnerable absolutely everything we do is to cyber attacks. Anyone who lives near a lovely village shop who will happily sub them till the power comes back on, that’s great. Most people are using faceless organisations to obtain their food and even my small supermarket that I buy milk and bread in most days and know everyone in there, is a chain all run on checks and balances electronically. They wouldn’t have the ability to be like oh she’s good for it, let her take that bread. They’d be cleaned out in minutes/looted, and it’d be game over if they couldn’t use their tills but opened the doors.

It’s hardly scaremongering, Burnham has just poorly worded something that people should be reminded of regularly. It’s normal and makes perfect sense when looking at El Niño and issues with Russia. America can cut off half our shit if they get more pissed off with us than they already are. We are really vulnerable and people need to stop squawking that anyone aware of that is somehow a hysterical twit. Trump does mental stuff all the time, look at what they did with Starlink and Ukraine, they crippled their operational abilities. They could cut off Microsoft, Palantir, Google systems. We’d be fucked and nobody would be able to get money out of the bank or pay for anything or go very far. Every other thing we have is digital.

Truinio · 24/10/2026 18:09

Have you literally never had a power cut where you live? Shops don’t stay open.

Honestly? No. Nothing more than an hour or so, not since the miners strikes.

I found a map at one point. I went looking the year before last when electricity shortages were predicted and I think we're one of the major parts of the grid so something would have to be very wrong for us to be off for any period of time. I bought a generator anyway and had our boiler wired so that the pump could still be run.

Jesus fucking Christ. I drink that much because that’s what I drink. It’s not a big deal and I’ve not got diabetes. My HBA1C was 30 last time it was checked! I just stay hydrated.

Despite the misleading name diabetes insipidus is different to type 1 or 2 diabetes, although does share symptoms with type 1 and HbA1c is not relevant. There is also no reason to be rude, it was a genuine suggestion that you or someone else might find helpful. It is a rare disease and often misdiagnosed. My comment to you was polite, so your response wasn't warranted, you were free to ignore it if you felt it wasn't relevant to you.

I lived 1100ft up the side of a mountain for a decade, in that time the longest power cut was 23hours, other than that probably 3 other significant (1hr + power cuts), 4 days snowed in, but clear to 4x4 after the first day. That was the only time I couldn't get to work ever. Never had supermarkets run out of food in my lifetime. Worked a few sketchy shifts as a paramedic in storms in rural areas, but always made it through to people (once it took 3 attempts and we were a bit concerned about then getting blocked in as we'd used the last remaining option and trees were still falling), also slid my ambulance down some snowy hills over the years and miracolously never hit anything.

Nearly got stuck on a hebridean island in a storm, I say nearly because the ferry captain but in a valiant effort to make it across, picking his weather window, and whilst 8 hours late he did it and then we had a rough ride back to Oban. So even then no actual crisis.

I'd say we are a pretty resilient country, with plenty evidence of good supply chains and emergency planning, not the opposite.

Terrific stuff - that’s the spirit.

FindingMeno · 24/10/2026 19:28

Why are people so riled up?
Get some bits in or don't.
I think there's potential for quite a number of things to kick off.
I think that this advice isn't just about weather, but the super el nino, which could cause problems, is a handy hook to hang it on.
It's absolutely not beyond reason to be aware of possibilities that could affect us - and the best way not to be scared is to feel you've done what you can to mitigate the impact on yourself and your family.

Lots of people who enjoy being cruel, but I’d bet they have huge deliveries of supplies on the way!!

But you don’t appear to have any delivery on the way, given you’ve spent the day having spats about this idea of yours @sookiestjames77

Bet you live in Surrey now?!

Barney16 · 24/10/2026 19:34

I thought this was just a "be prepared" thing. Not an announcement of imminent disaster. I'm not worried, I've lived through the seventies and the three day week and consumed the bread my mother made ( no bread in shops) if I can survive that I can survive anything.

Any person posting should be allowed to post what they want without anyone being so invested (and weird) to back search someones history.
They should be allowed to reveal what info they choose.

As for people wasting time 1) surely all of us are doing exactly that right now and 2) anyone can be anyone on here !
We never know what is what and what is who.

nutshellpot · 24/10/2026 20:42

I think it's as much about disruptions to the energy supply as anything else. Apparently during the summer heatwaves we came really close to large scale and longer lasting power outages such as those seen in Spain and Portugal in 2025. We are also facing more frequent storms and risk of flooding. Having some easy to eat food and extra water stored as well as things like candles, flashlights and so on makes sense in case we need it.

If it really were to come to Nuclear War a few tins of beans just aren't going to cut it so no point in worrying about that.

I don’t think it can be much worse than an attack that stops life for three days to be honest

I mean you know that’s not true right? But if are already struggling mentally best not to think too deeply.

No it's not. When a poster looks a bit of a lunatic, it's sometimes helpful to get context.

The government advice is literally to prepare homes for any short term interruption to normal life. Nothing more.

They say that the U.K. lags behind many of our neighbouring countries and this is the first step in an ongoing plan to build resilience.

You're not supposed to build a bunker and stockpile to survive a nuclear holicaust, FFS. You're just told to make sure you and your family could cope should there be a serious adverse weather event, a cyber attack targeting infrastructure, or any other emergency that might disrupt normal life.

They can't tell you what to prepare for or when it will happen because it's about being prepared for sudden emergencies. Which by their nature are unexpected.

Where are you that people are panicking? The only panic I've seen is on Mnet.

In fairness, @TooBigForMyBoots , my MIL's local supermarket looked like Christmas today - shelves stripped bare all over the place and queues up the aisles. It was just weird.
