To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

You are aware we’re in the United Kingdom right? Unless you’re mega rural this doesn’t happen.

Other countries issue similar messages

It's happening literally now in Cornwall.

How is one person so naive in so many different ways? 😅😅😅😅

I think some sort of large scale attack from Russia and or Iran is imminent.

You've jumped the shark now OP 😂

There’s a snowstorm in Cornwall?! I’m in Devon so had I better be prepared?!

Sorry but yes it does! Parts of cities even flood!
Google ‘Scarborough flood October 23rd 2026’ whilst Scarborough is not a city it’s a very big town and major tourist destination which is flooded and lots of people are trapped in their homes as I type this!

She meant the landslips etc cutting people off. We had no power for 12 days after Goretti. We're 3 miles from a small city so not exactly hyper-rural.

There has been huge flooding and power outages.
But I'm not sure why I'm even replying at this point. You're either a troll or chronically simple minded.

You drink 4 litres of water a day ?
Presumably you drink nothing else at all. ?
I've always had several tins of food that can be eaten without prep eg fish. Fruit. Also nuts. Crackers. Bottled water.
Wind up torches and radios are good sense.
Try not to worry.

@sookiestjames77 It maybe related to the global PHP cybersecurity attacks

They just want everyone to be prepared for their budget next week.

When they've pushed up the price of a tin of soup to £5, then they'll just say that they did tell everyone to stock up... besides it will artificially make it look like the economy has improved and everyone is out spending money.

Obviously this emergency warning doesn't apply to those on benefits or asylum seekers as their soup will be provided by the government (from working people's tax increases and pensioners cuts).

Nationwide?

Again, that’s not a realistic scenario is it? So what are they hiding?

You're spiralling and veering towards conspiracy thinking.

The website says From severe weather to cyber attacks, emergencies can disrupt the services you rely on

You know what this is about - a weather event or cyber attack.

They are saying these things are possible, so best to be prepared.

moominontherun · 24/10/2026 14:43

I’d be peeing every 10 mins with that much water #missingthepoint

The thing is, OP, it’s out of our control anyway. You either spend your time fretting or you do what the government has advised and live your life like everyone else is doing. Get your three days of supplies and park them and your brain until when or if they are needed.

On the power cuts thing, I wouldn’t say we live massively rurally, we are within 40 mins of two cities, I can get to a cinema in 20 mins, but we had friends within 5 miles from our house without power for a week in Storm Arwen.

Power cuts in bad weather aren’t uncommon in anmng places and they can take hours or even a day or two for power to be restored. In a storm, there often aren’t enough engineers working to cover all the issues so they have to triage. A lot of it won’t make the news and if you live in the inner city then any power cuts tend to be very short, but rest assured they go on all over the country for varying amounts of time!

We have an Amber warning tonight for wind so we have charged the power banks, got the torches ready and are keeping the house warm in case we lose power, just like we’ve done for years.

By carrying on as normal

It's the usual conspiracy theory nuts spreading rumours and some people believing it. And a total lack of common sense from some people.

My perfectly normal, clever, rational friend messaged last night to ask if I was stocking up. When I said no she said "you must take this seriously" and now I can't take her seriously

Of course it happens! And not just in “mega rural” areas. Did the 2019 floods simply pass you by? Or 2007 when Tewkesbury was entirely cut off? We had a four day power cut that took out our nearest town and all the surrounding villages a few years back, and took out the water with it. In Surrey, not the Highlands.

Honestly, I think you’re now just being obtuse.

TheLarch · 24/10/2026 14:45

Ribenaberry12 · 24/10/2026 14:46

I’m Gen X and I kind of feel like I’ve always lived like this! My grandparents were the silent generation and they always had tins in the pantry, candles etc. in case of air raids. They passed that mentality onto my parents. Growing up I remember the nuclear threat and it feels like power cuts and water outages were a lot more common in my childhood than now. I always had a drawer for candles, matches, torches, batteries and tins and water ‘just in case’. I’m starting to realise that not everyone lives like this and I wonder if it’s a
bit of an age thing!

moominontherun · 24/10/2026 14:46

Look here at the south of England

https://powertrack.ssen.co.uk/powertrack

105 reported instances of power cuts, which may affect thousands of homes. Many of them will be fixed swiftly, others will have to wait. It’s often like this in a storm and we know that there is likely to be a lot of wind and rain this winter, so it makes sense to be prepared as not every area can be instantly reconnected when it’s on a large scale.

HumbleStumble · 24/10/2026 14:46

If it's nuclear war, I don't think your wet wipes will help that much

Nationwide?

Again, that’s not a realistic scenario is it? So what are they hiding?

Why does it need to be nationwide to have a huge impact on you?

Some of the extreme storms we now get more often - and are much more likely to get in the future - take out multiple regions' infrastructure at once, meaning that the effectiveness of mutual aid arrangements is reduced.

I was previously involved in the response to a major and regionally widespread storm where mutual aid was activated - but the impacts of the storm were such that it took days to get engineers to where they were needed - because transport infrastructure (both road and rail) were seriously impacted. Which then further delayed getting the power back on.

Why are you scared of taking some personal responsibility, seeing you're so scared of everything else?

uiui · 24/10/2026 14:47

sookiestjames77 · 24/10/2026 13:16

That we need to be prepared for some sort of disaster. They won’t say what sort, of course. But they want us to have handheld radios, torches, sleeping bags!!!

They have been advising this for at least 20 years. This is just rebranding of very old advice.
