To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

What, exactly, are they envisioning happening that will stop us leaving for three days? This is the point. They’re not being clear at all.

Well, love, they've not been to your house and done you a personalised risk assessment, so they don't know your specific risk profile.

So they don't know in a major storm whether you'd be cut off from town by floodwaters or roads being cut, or whether you're in town but if the power is cut off for a few days you won't be able to access the shops or buy anything, so you should have food and warmth in. Whether in a cyberattack your heating is based on the electrics working. And all the other ways in which our lives aren't identical.

They're probably expecting you to use your own actual brain a bit to figure out how you'd affected by various scenarios and be able to
answer the question "how would I be affected if I didn't have electricity, water or access to shops for a few days."

Soupedupp · 24/10/2026 14:30

Why has everyone gone completely mental?

You really are being quite dense. They don’t mean physically stopping you from leaving your house, but if the power went out for 3 days and you were prepared with some food, warmth and communication it would really help ease the pressure on shops for example, and you wouldn’t be getting in the way of emergency services trying to sort the problem out. There’s no big conspiratorial YOU MUSTN’T LEAVE YOUR HOUSE going on . Unless there a zombie apocalypse in which case we’re stuffed if it’s those really fast running ones !

Again, THEY ARE NOT HIDING ANYTHING!! They literally just don't know.

It's like shouting into a void.

Modernschooling · 24/10/2026 14:31

Surely it’s just powercut basics.
You either need to be a proper prepper to last months ; in which case being able to shoot ( food, looters ) is going to be essential or just accept a week is all you can do.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 24/10/2026 14:31

Bigfattwatt · 24/10/2026 14:27

Oh good god.

The thing is, if something really terrible were to happen, what would 24 toilet rolls and a shit ton of baked beans actually do for you?

I used to be a prepper. I had years of supplies. I drove myself insane.

now, I don’t even watch the news or read the papers. I am so much better.

I’m going in holiday on Monday, so all we currently have in the house is a few pizzas and some sandwich stuff.

Eating a shit ton of beans with a limited supply of toilet paper seems ill advised.

I'm a similar age to you. Maybe after living through those ads and the 'nuclear war is just round the corner' attitude of the 1980s we're somewhat more circumspect when it comes to modern day govt warnings.

My Uncle (who was in his defence military so probably all abit closer to home) went all out with the nuclear prepping buying large amounts of bottled water/ canned food. My day took the piss out of him for the next 4 decades!

TheRealSmurfette · 24/10/2026 14:31

How the hell do you drink 5 litres a day?!

sookiestjames77 · 24/10/2026 14:31

Genevieva · 24/10/2026 14:30

Love this comment.

You are healthier than me. I subsist on tea. I know I don’t drink enough water, but I never think to. Without tea I’d turn into a crisp.

To be fair I mainly drink water - no fizzy drinks or even really juices. I have a couple of coffees and a tea a day, but probably 80% of what I drink is water. I suspect if people added up all of the other drinks they have too, they’d be drinking closer to what I drink!

Why has everyone gone completely mental?

It's the usual conspiracy theory nuts spreading rumours and some people believing it. And a total lack of common sense from some people.

What, exactly, are they envisioning happening that will stop us leaving for three days? This is the point. They’re not being clear at all.

Floods and snowstorms frequently stop people leaving their houses for several days. Fallen trees and landslips and bridge collapses can easily cut you off for several days. It’s common to go for days without power or water. Surely you are aware of all this? Surely you’ve seen TV reports of these kind of incidents? They happen pretty much every year.

I think some sort of large scale attack from Russia and or Iran is imminent.

Nationwide?

Again, that’s not a realistic scenario is it? So what are they hiding?

FGS, it doesn't have to be nationwide does it.

The government works for the whole country so needs to warn the whole country (and they don't control the weather so can't tell where its going to flood etc ).

DoubleBusy2026 · 24/10/2026 14:33

chirrupybird · 24/10/2026 14:21

The op doesn't want to understand that it just a general thing going into the winter to be prepared for potential disruption, they want to panic and try and get everyone to panic with them. And they want an emergency parcel to cover all their potential needs in the event of a flood or power cut, rather than just stock up their fridge. Whatever happened to common sense? As said before similar advice is given every winter.

Yep this is exactly it. Some people genuinely love to ‘act’ as though they’re scared that there’s going to be a big war/nuclear attack/end of days. I think it’s the adrenaline rush?
We used to get it a lot where I live on the local Facebook groups when a nearby RAF flight training station was open. Little Tucanos flying overhead regularly, would often spark a Facebook post “Anyone know why there’s so many “jets” flying around? I’m really starting to get scared now…..” (Tucanos are turboprops not Jets but ok!) They’d be told by 10/15 locals that it’s an almost daily occurrence here and they’re just training some new pilots for the RAF, but despite this, they’d be insistent that no, no this is something more than that….. 🙄
I even once went onto the website for that station and screenshotted the notice for that weeks’ flight training schedule and posted it but no, this woman STILL wouldn’t accept it. This was in 2016!
Some people are just addicted to adrenaline and Won’t. Be. Told. 🤷🏼‍♀️

You are aware we’re in the United Kingdom right? Unless you’re mega rural this doesn’t happen.

I think its daft to ignore it.

But do what you reasonably do. Get a few more tins, some water, batteries for the torch and then move on with life.

Keep it in perspective.
There's no point fretting over building bunkers, if things get that bad I'd rather be dead anyway.

I mean, unfortunately Mystic Meg isn't on their staff. But it doesn't take a genius to see that the climate is going a bit nuts, and what with everything being internet-enabled, a hacker / rogue nation could interrupt the food and water supply, despite everyone's best efforts. So better to have something in stock, just in case. They're not asking you to build a bunker, just buy some extra water and baked beans!
