To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

I’m Gen X and I kind of feel like I’ve always lived like this! My grandparents were the silent generation and they always had tins in the pantry, candles etc. in case of air raids. They passed that mentality onto my parents. Growing up I remember the nuclear threat and it feels like power cuts and water outages were a lot more common in my childhood than now. I always had a drawer for candles, matches, torches, batteries and tins and water ‘just in case’. I’m starting to realise that not everyone lives like this and I wonder if it’s a
bit of an age thing!

Same!

And I hope nothing bad happens but I actually love when the electricity goes out for a bit. Not days, but hours.

By drinking wine.

Might as well - at least then we’ll sleep until the power comes back on

Magicpaintbrush · 24/10/2026 13:52

Why do they want us to buy sleeping bags?? Is it because they think we'll have to leave our homes??

I’d imagine it’s because a sleeping bag will keep you much warmer than a duvet if the heating goes off and it’s 3 degrees in your bedroom in the middle of winter.

I can't believe the OP is now arguing that there aren't power cuts and flooding after shitting their pants about the warnings
🙈😅

Triskellion75 · 24/10/2026 14:49

If we get nuked I'm running towards the cloud.

watchingthishtread · 24/10/2026 14:50

What are all the wet wipes for?

Jellykat · 24/10/2026 14:50

Laughing at this thread, currently in West Wales, power's been off since 1.00, which is pretty normal once the wind starts blowing... (and also why I'm here reading the thread )
It's no big deal!

oh come on! we know from the past that local churches, community halls and so on will open. When I had dogs, my plan was to go to higher ground and sleep in the car if necessary as not all evacuation spaces would accept animals.

Yeah we're not in a flood area but if at all feasible, as in roads are likely clear enough our preference is closer to your plan.

Truly baffling.

Thousands of Cornwall homes without power due to Storm Austen

Carnon Downs and Marazion are among the areas worst hit

I'm not remotely scared by it. Just don't engage with government twattery. The summer BBQ alert was totally madness

If it's nuclear war, I don't think your wet wipes will help that much

I don't know. Personally, I'd be shitting myself!

I don’t think it can be much worse than an attack that stops life for three days to be honest

Really? I can think of many possibilities that would be much worse.

Should we start growing for victory - when I can no longer afford to shop at Aldi as all my money is going on tax and bills? #Labourbudgetnextweek.

Nah they'll introduce a garden tax soon. Where there's a Labour govt, nothing is safe.

Silverbirchleaf · 24/10/2026 14:53

In my area of the country, we’re in a hosepipe ban, and for three evenings during one week on the summer , we had no water supply. It was useful to have bottled water in the garage. A simple example as that explains why it’s useful to be prepared. Nothing catastrophic, just a temporary water supply.

In my case, I’ll do an assessment of my cupboards, and see whether I need a top of of tinned potatoes, beans etc.

Look here at the south of England

https://powertrack.ssen.co.uk/powertrack

105 reported instances of power cuts, which may affect thousands of homes. Many of them will be fixed swiftly, others will have to wait. It’s often like this in a storm and we know that there is likely to be a lot of wind and rain this winter, so it makes sense to be prepared as not every area can be instantly reconnected when it’s on a large scale.

Yep, the entire southern half of my village is without power, aiming to be restored by 23h00. I suspect we will lose ours in short order too. Luckily we have solar and battery with a backup gateway so shouldn’t affect us - the solar battery effectively acts as a UPS for the entire house. Won’t be able to take an (electric) shower but at least the central heating pump and lights will keep running.

I quite fancy getting a communal pig, the whole street would feed it their scraps, and then …. eat it. Actually cancel that idea, I couldn’t !

But according to OP, this never happens in the UK…

And you think an attack that every person in the country is being told to stockpile for is only going to last three days? It’s called scare tactics. It’s an age old means of controlling the populace. Having people living in fear so that they stay compliant and don’t start rising up against the elite. They want us to all be fearful scared little people who are frightened all the time because it’s easier to control us. The establishment doesn’t like free thinking people who don’t believe it.

You drink 4-5 litres a day?? Do you exercise a lot? Is drinking that much even healthy?
