To be really scared by this messaging from the government?

As someone who really struggled during the pandemic this has really scared me. I have done a big order of hygiene basics to arrive tomorrow (12 x packs of wet wipes etc) and will be heading out for a stock up shop tomorrow to fill up on tins etc.

I’m considering ordering 12 of those water refills for water coolers and a pump that fits in the top, but I don’t know if that’s overkill. I alone drink 4-5 litres of water a day, plus cooking water!

I am really scared. How is everyone else dealing with this?

Agreed. Do you remember the 'build your own nuclear bunker' type info in the 1980s😂🙄

I do! Those infomercials were truly terrifying!

If that was the case they would come out and state this clearly.

That’s the point of my post! They have!

Really wish Mumsnet would add a special board the way they did for Covid. That way all the crazy panicking posters could go there and panic together instead of clogging up the main boards with this.

I think a board called Crazy Panicking Posters would do it !

DoubleBusy2026 · 24/10/2026 14:24

The only thing I have bought, is a wind up & solar powered power bank which just so happens to have a radio & torch on it although I just want it because it will be helpful in a power cut to keep my phone charged. Not 30yr military rations here!

You probably need to relax a little, this is in case power goes out following a storm or theres a flood or you can’t leave your house for 2-3 days its to reduce the pressure on emergency services. Also of you can’t leave your house its going to be extremely hard to get essential food delivery.

What, exactly, are they envisioning happening that will stop us leaving for three days? This is the point. They’re not being clear at all.

You and your family share your…. Unusual view.

So…. Start buying up!

Well if the SS. Richard Montgomery was targeted (WW2 sunken ship in Thames Estuary packed with explosives), which I guess is possible, then that would be a major flooding/tsumani catastrophe in Kent and Essex. I live nearby so it has crossed my mind before now.

The one in Medway? Its hardly a well loved or critical area to attack. The only thing we Medway people need to fear the attack of is being slated for living in a rough area on SM

Maomee · 24/10/2026 14:25

There's a certain limit to how much you should respond to this sort of thing. Quite reasonable to have a few dry/long life bits in whatever the advice. There's no use stockpiling months worth as in the event of societal breakdown you will have bigger issues e.g. people smashing through your windows to take your supplies lol. (Hopefully it won't come to that).

Zov · 24/10/2026 14:25

Seriously, it's top tier scaremongering. Just get on with your life.

We are always being warned/threatened by SOMEthing, and have been all of my life. Be that climate change, nuclear war, the millennium bug, fire, flood, or hell and damnation. And now people are scared of a.i..... All of this, yet we're pretty much OK still...

You can't live like this @sookiestjames77 And I have to say, I am so pissed off with the Government issuing this bloody warning! All it's done is scaremonger, and make people panic buy. I hate myself for this, but this morning I went to the shops, and got 8 two-litre bottles of still mineral water, and 24 small bottles (35cl.) I'm afraid of them running out because of the warnings/panic buying, but also I do actually normally buy it anyway, because I drink a lot of water. (Sometimes I do have tap water, but not if I'm going out for the day, because tap water tastes horrible after 4-5 hours in the bottle.)

So I'm making myself part of the problem, ARGH!

To be fair though, most people buying water and loo rolls etc, did only have the same as me or less. No-one was buying trollies full.

.

Pedant61 · 24/10/2026 14:25

Most people I know will completely - and rightly - ignore it. It's scaremongering claptrap.
If the worst comes to the worst, I have plenty of wine so at least I'll die happy!
Don't waste your life worrying, OP - try actually living it.

I do! Those infomercials were truly terrifying!

I watched 'Threads' a couple of years ago - it's the only film that has ever given me lasting trauma.

rainbowunicorn · 24/10/2026 14:26

Magicpaintbrush · 24/10/2026 13:52

Why do they want us to buy sleeping bags?? Is it because they think we'll have to leave our homes??

Oh come on, are you really so hard of thinking that you dont know how a weather event could mean you need to evacuate?
Have a think about the last few years, have you seriously never seen any news reports telling you people have been evacuated to the church hall, community centre, local high school?

Goatsarebest · 24/10/2026 14:26

Part of climate adaptation is to build up resilience to extreme weather events. It's not all about mitigation by reducing emissions of green house gases. We had 12 days without electricity last year due to weather. That's on the worst case point, but a couple of days isn't unreasonable to plan for in every community. So just consider how you would live without electricity or Internet or water for a couple of days and what you would need to get through it.
That's all. No panic required.

If there's terrible flooding maybe, or very heavy snow, obviously it depends where you live.

Nationwide?

Again, that’s not a realistic scenario is it? So what are they hiding?

Bigfattwatt · 24/10/2026 14:27

Oh good god.

The thing is, if something really terrible were to happen, what would 24 toilet rolls and a shit ton of baked beans actually do for you?

I used to be a prepper. I had years of supplies. I drove myself insane.

now, I don’t even watch the news or read the papers. I am so much better.

I’m going in holiday on Monday, so all we currently have in the house is a few pizzas and some sandwich stuff.

Nomorewino · 24/10/2026 14:28

Prepared to be told Ive been living under a rock, but where is this message coming from? I have only seen reference to it on mumsnet!

I have the radio on so hear the news, and have several times looked at the news online the last few days and nothing is jumping out at me.

CherryBlossom321 · 24/10/2026 14:29

sookiestjames77 · 24/10/2026 14:15

They agree with me that we should be very worried.

What do you think is going to happen?

Vinvertebrate · 24/10/2026 14:29

Popstarrrrr · 24/10/2026 14:18

This is my approach too, but I have grave concerns I may not have enough storage if things really go to shit.

You can get decent wine in boxes these days, and they stack more efficiently than glass bottles. Plus it keeps longer in case of prolonged shit going down, and it’s less obvious that you’re exceeding the recommended number of units. 👍

Flood, power cut, extreme winter conditions- all of which are perfectly reasonable reasons for having some essentials in the cupboard - which is all they are asking for…. the messaging has been really clear.

We got snowed in for 4 days, I regret not stocking up on milk before hand as we ran out, but we were drinking obscene amounts of hot chocolate apres sledge.

I'm a similar age to you. Maybe after living through those ads and the 'nuclear war is just round the corner' attitude of the 1980s we're somewhat more circumspect when it comes to modern day govt warnings.

blondeseaside · 24/10/2026 14:29

Just remember, in the case of no electricity, a full freezer of food will spoil quite quickly. So even if you have a full freezer, you need to discount most of that food.

I’m fine thanks, I am larger and active.

Love this comment.

You are healthier than me. I subsist on tea. I know I don’t drink enough water, but I never think to. Without tea I’d turn into a crisp.

chirrupybird · 24/10/2026 14:30

sookiestjames77 · 24/10/2026 14:23

Is it really trolling to be concerned?

Yes, when you obviously don't read or understand what people are telling you. You are entitled to be a bit worried but it's not reasonably to be in some sort of full panic mode, just put a few bits in your cupboards in case of any problems. Probably nothing at all will happen but if there was a power cut you would be OK for a couple of days.
