People who marry into the aristocracy

I’m watching Clodagh McKenna’s new show on ITV, scratching my head as to why this cringey “oh look how bubbly and fun I am” complete with permanent rictus smile is suddenly everywhere from nowhere and read that she is married to Henry Herbert, son of the 7th Earl of Canarvan.

AIBU that my heart sinks that yet again here’s another example of success being about marrying into the establishment and connections rather than genuine talent?

Google them and you’ll see what I mean. She is undoubtedly beautiful and he is… well, let’s hope he’s not as dull as he looks

Clodagh has been publishing books since 2009. She married in 2021 I believe.

I have definitely seen her on TV before she married.

Is there a particular reason you dislike this very successful, attractive and wealthy woman? 😆

Floatlikeafeather2 · Today 12:27

She's a cook who writes cookery books. He is CEO of a racehorse stables. At least you can say they're working for their living. No need to be outraged (or is it jealous?).

I would love to marry a Lord, Earl or Viscount. How do you go about meeting members of the aristocracy?

GettingThereEveryDay · Today 12:33

Ok I admit I may be biased because I loathe the aristocracy and everything they stand for. I don’t believe for a moment that anyone outside of their insular world would choose to marry into it if they weren’t interested in status.

Assuming you’re not born into that world, by dissolving your natural personality and becoming a stepford wife

Actually she is growing on me the more I watch. 😊

maybe I’m being unfair. Maybe she did marry for true love…

She runs or at least used to events where you pay a vast sum to go to her house with a small group and she cooks for you and 'teaches' how to cook the meal. Someone I know paid to go to one of these, was looking forward to it and a few days before (last minute) got an email saying she had decided to go to do some tv filming in the morning elsewhere so her assistant would run the day and she'd turn up at the end! Like that was ok. Why do you think people are paying that amount for the "celebrity" chef dear? That's right - to meet the celebrity chef. In the end it was cancelled probably because like the person I knew no one would wear it, but the cheek of thinking it would have been alright to accept another job and people would still pay hundreds of pounds for a completely different experience without her there for most of the time.

Struck me as a bit strangely desperately money grabbing to be organizing these events to have strangers in your own home anyway especially as you say she has a wealthy husband and probably a chunky income from TV and books. Never warmed to her after I heard that story.

Edited to add: I've just looked it up and she still does them. £650 for one ticket!

So it’s impossible to simply in love?

YertleTheTurtle · Today 13:05

BIL married into aristocracy - on the surface they're an unlikely couple, but they've been married for years and cleary love each other. BIL also happens to be a well respected household name all by his own merit, and has plenty of his own wealth that he's worked for.

I therefore assume that people who marry into aristocracy just fall in love like everyone else?

Every single one of them? Do you think they are all identical?
I recommend a book called Splendour and Squalor by Marcus Scrivens. It’s about some aristocratic families who, through the heirs being gamblers or spendthrifts or whatever, lost all the family fortunes.
You’d enjoy it.

However, for those who’ve held onto their wealth, what do you think should happen to them?

Nofeckingway · Today 13:18

Sophie Winkleman, Claudia sister also married into aristocracy . I think he got the better deal managing to snag Big Suze .

Edited

She does come across as being opportunistic and determined to become a household name

What a bitter and twisted world you live. Jealousy is clearly weighing heavy. Let it go, your life may be better for it.

Firstly you have to change where you go, what you do and the clothes you wear. Develop a passion for Alice bands.
Secondly, keep very quiet indeed about your family, or just lie about them. After that it should be plain sailing. Which you should also take up.

Doodletown · Today 13:39

I know Clodagh from way back — not particularly well, but she’s had a long career in grafting away making a living from cookery in unglamorous ways. I think she was developing airline meals at one point, long before the TV stuff. It wouldn’t be the marriage for me, and I’m not keen on the aristocracy of any country, but…

Ah yes… what could it possibly be that attracted Clodagh to Harry 👀 Cannot abide the woman.

Ha! If you knew my background you would understand that I am definitely not coming from a place of jealousy! But you go ahead and cast your cod psychology

Yup. Just like the actress who didn’t know anything about the other (Prince) Harry when they met!
