AIBU to feel insulted by flowers framed as a ‘present’ but paid for from our joint account?

DH came home with flowers from Sainsbury’s and announced, “I got you a present.”

I then discovered he’d paid for them from our joint account.

We’ve always contributed equally to that account and kept separate personal accounts for our own spending and treats. So I’d effectively paid for half of my own “present”.

They cost £5.50 and looked shabby and past their best. His own contribution to this grand gesture was therefore £2.75.

What made it worse is that I prefer flowers growing in the garden or live pot plants. He knows this.

It felt like an afterthought and a half-hearted attempt at generosity. The message I received was: “You’re not worth buying a present for out of my own spending money.” and "you're worth £2.75."

AIBU to find the whole thing insulting?

Surely it’s the thought that counts? Isn’t it just a nice thing that he thought of you whilst he was out shopping?

He didn’t think at all, therein lies the issue.

No it doesn’t. If he didn’t think, there wouldn’t have been anything would there? No flowers or anything else.

It sounds like youve got a lot on your plate.
It definitely definitely wasnt him saying your worth 2.75. I think it was him probably trying to be kind and thinking aw sges a bit sad today maybe she'd like these.
Ok he didnt get it quite right. But it really shouldn't matter re account.

Do you know what my partners got me some interesting stuff over the years but I always respond with happy thanks and a smile and a cuddle because I know hes telling me he loves me. I want him to feel excited and confident to buy me something not be worrying about my reaction..and actually as times gone on hes mostly got better at choosing stuff I really love im sure i dont get it right all the time for him too. I chose that kindness from the start because I knew he was really nervous as his ex had always been very critical and negative about his gift giving (hes never been awful for it at all, just the odd thing has been a bit random). I just love that hes thought of me either way I know he's a human who will get it right sometimes and wrong others and I feel chilled about that.

Maybe you're burnt out? Could you do some stuff that restores and comforts you?

Can you see you are asking OP to treat her husband like a pre schooler?

Well tbf not everyone thinks seriously about the definition of the word "present" before describing something they bought for someone while shopping... I would frequently use that word in the same context.

But would you say it about something that the receiver wouldn't particularly like to receive?

This is where people are getting confused IMO, OP doesn't really like cut flowers, and getting a half dead bunch because that is all that was left is not 'thoughtful', if anything it shows a complete lack of thought as to what would actually cheer her up.

People are missing the point to be fair.

BigFatLiar · 23/10/2026 13:32

Well with a bit of luck he'll take the hint and not get you add hoc 'presents' in future.

PickAChew · 23/10/2026 14:43

Would people say I had been thoughtful if I picked up a nice bottle of Chablis for DH? I mean, he rarely drinks and especially doesn't like white wine but it's the thought that counts, no?

openended · 23/10/2026 15:02

I'm not surprised your feelings were hurt, it was thoughtless of him. Just because some women have next to no standards doesnt mean you shouldn't.

Eggs2022 · 23/10/2026 15:16

It sounds like you’re having a tough time at the minute and this has put you over the edge, I know there’s been times before when I’ve been down and literally everything hurt my feelings and annoyed me because I was just generally miserable- looking back now the things I got annoyed about were ridiculous but at the time were so hurtful - so just try to be nice to yourself, I promise your husband doesn’t not care about you, you will feel better again, I hope you have a nice weekend and do something nice for yourself! With the joint account lol

Overitallnow · 23/10/2026 16:24

Why is this even an issue??????

2Rebecca · 23/10/2026 16:45

All our presents come from joint money as our money is joint. The thinking of and buying a present is the important bit.

Yes I know. So do i. But when you are married all money is essentially joint money whether it’s in one account or another- you don’t live in separate bubbles. Ultimately any money that gets spent on anything is out of the family finances. Being upset about which account money comes out of seems a bit silly when you are married and everything is ultimately family funds.

Edited

Not everyone does their finances like that though. I agree with what you’re saying about all money is joint money when married regardless of what account it is in but not everyone treats money that way

Okay, I over reacted. I was in the wrong. I'm feeling quite down. I'm perimenopausal. I'm dealing with a lot of stress right now. I've supported him with a lot. I misjudged this one. Equally, I'm not the only one over reacting. Whoever told me I have a "ludicrous perspective" seems to be over reacting too. I'm telling you here I'm quite down, and asking for kindness on this thread. I've admitted I over reacted. Asking "why did you marry him with that attitude" seems FAR more extreme than my question deserved.

Please do not use the excuse of being perimenopausal to be such a winer.
