Does anyone else dislike splitting the bill?

Unless you've had something very similar and the price difference is pennies.
I went out with a group of friends the other week, I don't drink alcohol and most of them do. I had a starter as a main course, and two diet cokes.
It came to £33 each when splitting, even though my starter was i think £8.99 and two cokes around £8 in total.

That included a tip, but that would've meant me leaving a £16 tip which sounds extreme. I wish I'd spoken up really, next time I will but you're labelled as 'tight' if you do that. I asked them to confirm again, and nobody said 'you've only had a starter/soft drinks whereas we had more.'

It does put me off going sometimes but I suppose if your friends call you tight/cheapskate then they aren't real friends? I'm on more of a budget too.

I went out for dinner awhile ago for a friends birthday and sat next to a woman who ordered three jugs of cocktails and her and the lady next to her drank them.

The bill was split equally and I just put cash down for what I had inc a tip and said I didn't drink any alcohol. Got some dirty looks as it meant the bill needed recalculating but no one forced me to pay more as most people understood it wasn't fair.

You need to speak up!

This is where the problem lies with all this - the caring what selfish fuckwits people think of you.
Even though I'm still a bit of a people pleaser in my mind 50's 🫣 I draw the line when it comes to cash - I won't let CF shame me out of my money.

Absolutely. The people we were dining with at the time were wealthy so could afford those prices. My husband wanted to say something but I told him not to. I’ve never been put in that situation since. I speak up these days now I’m older. Like you I’m still a bit of a people pleaser but not in situations like this anymore

This.

Recent meal out I arrived later (due to work) - others had already had several / many 'shots on the tab' - I was driving so had just sparking water, no alcohol, I was made to feel like Scrooge as I said I would pay only my own bill, needless to say, like that episode of 'Friends', they had no idea what CF's they were being. (well, actually I think they did know, but thought it was OK that I would subsidise their choices - not that I care what they choose, just that I won't be held responsible to pay). I even drove some of them home. Next meal out will be Nandos, I think, lol - each pay for exactly what you consume.

I got stung like this once a few years ago. Ended up paying £35 for a meal which actually added up to £18. I learnt my lesson the hard way and won't do it now unless it's just me and a friend and we're having something very similar in price. I think some people just use this as a way to get an expensive meal and numerous alcoholic drinks at a bargain price,at the expense of others!
