I’ll start:

BMW X1 2022
Year left on PCP, paying £350 a month

Need inspiration for what to do next, tempted to buy a used outright!

Toyota wide open, fat boy 4wd , 26 years old, wide arches soft top and the joy of my life . No finance , goes like a bomb and totally reliable.
I absolutely love it and we believe it to be the only 1 in the country 🥰 . It replaced a Mazda mx5 .

almondflake · 20/10/2026 22:33

@TheWytch our family car is a Toyota Corolla , bought new 20? Years ago and has to be an amazing family all rounder, never letting that one go 😁

gmgnts · 20/10/2026 22:39

Second hand Toyota Yaris, basic model. Does a reliable 62 mpg. Easy to drive and I love it!

TubeScreamer · 20/10/2026 22:39

Volvo v60, 2020
paid for outright at the time (was a year old when I bought it).

This may be a stupid question, but how on earth do people have 10k -20k + (estimate from the cars I've seen named here) to buy outright?
I know the answer is partially that they earn more, but still, 15k just sitting there? How?!

My car was paid for by part exchange and £10K I got from ths FSCS for a scam investment.

AutumnLeavesAndRaindrops · 20/10/2026 22:52

We have 3 Hilux, DH has a Volvo EX90 and I have my mini countryman. We live on a farm hence the 3 Hilux. The Volvo and the Mini are our cars not general farm vehicles. The Hilux are used by whoever needs them as are the 4 quads. No finance/lease etc on any of them.

I love my mini and I’ve always had mini’s, there great wee cars.

AlexandraJJ · 20/10/2026 22:54

2022 M4 bought outright want to keep it as long as possible as I love it

stian · 20/10/2026 22:56

I lease a Volvo XC40 through motability, it is £320 every 4 weeks which comes from my ADP

GoodkneeBadKnee · 20/10/2026 22:59

We've never bought a car on finance. Always buy outright, run it into the ground, then buy another one😅. Currently have a 23 plate Kia Niro.

mondaytosunday · 20/10/2026 23:03

Peugeot 2008 bought with trade in and cash 2020 just before lockdown so got about 20% off. First new car since my very first car 40 years ago! All others were second hand or ex demo. Thinking next car might have to be electric as I live in London but conflicted after reading an academic paper about how mining for the minerals needed for the batteries is harming the environment more than having one helps to save the environment…

Nottogetapenny · 20/10/2026 23:10

Jaguar E pace dynamic 73 plate, bought 2 years ago. Bought at Jaguar dealership for cash. No trade in.

Anononony · 20/10/2026 23:15

2013 scenic, bought outright for 5k

Never needed anything major touch wood! and fits a ridiculous amount of stuff in, we had 4 people, a dog in a crate and a bmx bike, folding chairs, coats etc all inside the car comfortably! I've even had 4 people and 3 bikes (again, inside) at one point, and it's the regular one, not the bigger version

I love it, it's so practical, though I wish it had roof bars!

TheLifeOfReily · 20/10/2026 23:15

In Jan this year I bought a 2025 Jeep Avenger paid outright. Within 30 days I had to reject the car as it had a serious power fault. Then bought a yellow Kia Sportage 2023 all bells and whistles and she is a dream. Paid outright. She is such a machine.

HappyLizard23 · 20/10/2026 23:18

2018 Kia Niro, I work in car finance and I’d never get a car on finance 🫣

Timeforachange26 · 20/10/2026 23:22

Vauxhall astra. 2016 plate bought outright

My colleague had a yellow 25 plate jeep. Sent it back to dealers due to issues. Ugly thing it was

wanttokickoffbutcant · 20/10/2026 23:45

I have a 2004 plate Fiat that I have had for 16 years - still under 100k on the clock and went through the MOT with no cost at all. I will drive it til it dies on me. Really not fussed about cars. This one is reliable and economical, has four wheels and it goes. That is what I need from a car.

Swissmeringue · 20/10/2026 23:47

VW Touran - 2021
Deeply uncool but has 5 isofix points, can genuinely get 3 car seats on the backseat and still fit in a normal parking space. I bloody love that car.

No payment, bought for 29k with 20k miles on it 2 years ago, will drive it until it dies. Devastated they've discontinued it tbh so I need this one to see us through the car seat years at the very least.

Jeep has notoriously bad quality control and reliability. I wouldn’t have one if it was free.

The money I spend on cars isn’t just sitting there, I save every month for the next car I’ll need (whilst hoping it won’t be for years!). I’m on my own with my kids and can only do a term-time job, the cost of secondhand cars nowadays makes me want to cry and keeps me awake at night.

Peugeot 5008, bought outright, I always buy outright.

Bus pass…cost nowt as I’m old!! But pay £12 a year to use local metro transport system. Bargain!
All you Mumsnet posters who are so concerned about the environment need to use buses more… save the planet! 🌍

What’s a metro transport system please? Is it a train?

UnaGatita · 21/10/2026 03:52

Bubbaliciousss · 20/10/2026 21:21

Does much come up on your MOTs for it?

I have a minor advisory that will stay where it is. It’s had a couple of fails (wear and tear items, bulb etc). Nothing significant. It’s been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned, was a recommend from a car hire company!

Just out of interest, why would you never get a car on finance?

ILoveKits · 21/10/2026 05:18

@eewwdavid I buy a 12 to 24 month old car outright and usually keep it for 7-9 years. I do high mileage. I save into a car account £200pcm, which is possible because I don't buy on finance.
