I’ll start:

BMW X1 2022
Year left on PCP, paying £350 a month

Need inspiration for what to do next, tempted to buy a used outright!

Second hand Golf. Bought outright, two years old, a few years ago.

MissConductUS · 20/10/2026 21:37

I just ordered a 2027 Subaru Forester hybrid. I’m trading in my 2020 Forester and paying the difference in cash. I love the Forester and DH drives a 2023 Subaru Impreza. Both are great cars and very reliable.

i never hear people mention Subaru on MN. Are they not popular in the UK? They sell a lot of them in the U.S., and some models are manufactured here.

getupdostuffgotobed · 20/10/2026 21:38

BMW i3 rex. 2016 model. Bought cash in 2019. 113k miles. The Rex is a bit temperamental and the cars range doesn’t compare to newer electric cars - but apart from tyres, wipers and a set of brake pads at 95k I’ve not spent anything on it.

bababamama · 20/10/2026 21:39

Mazda 3, bought outright 5 years ago second hand. I save £200 a month for the replacement so i never have to pay finance charges

Snackpocket · 20/10/2026 21:40

2023 Skoda Fabia, bought outright earlier this year. Only had 12000 miles on it so practically new!

EffinMagicFairy · 20/10/2026 21:40

Audi Q3, bought outright at 2 years old and have had it 5 years, still low mileage at 30k miles, can’t decide whether to trade it in or keep it as long as it’s trouble free, which I think is the sensible option, however have my eye on the Lexus LBX, keep telling myself I do not need a new car!

bababamama · 20/10/2026 21:42

@Gall10

guessing you live where there’s effective public transport. 90 year olds are still driving here because you can’t efficiently get around without a car (takes me 15 minutes by car to get to work but 1 hour 45 minutes by bus! No public footpath and very dangerous road so the 90 minute walk isn’t an option)

FruAashild · 20/10/2026 21:42

I've not used finance to buy a car since I bought my first car in 1999. Why would you? More sensible to save up then use cash.

Arlanymor · 20/10/2026 21:43

2012 Audi Q3, it's done over 150,000 miles now and when it gives up the ghost I will get another, I love it. (Or maybe a Q5). Bought it outright.

Gengha · 20/10/2026 21:44

I’ve got a Toyota Yaris cross, 2nd hand, bought outright. I need to pay myself the money back for my savings!

tinyspiny · 20/10/2026 21:45

A 2011 Kia soul bought outright when he was new . A 72 mg also bought outright from new . We’ve never had a car on finance and I don’t like cars that have too many gadgets , I’m perfectly capable of turning on my own windscreen wipers .

RaraRachael · 20/10/2026 21:47

Vauxhall Crossland bought outright 4 years ago

Gengha · 20/10/2026 21:47

Thesque · 20/10/2026 20:14

Just got rid of my ten year old Volvo V40 that I bought for cash
Just bought a 2024 Yaris Cross, part exchange and cash.
Also own a 2011 Suzuki swift bought for cash when six months old. Both DC learned in it, borrowed it and we keep it as a spare. Currently on loan to one DC while their car is repaired.
@Kitchenbattle how do you like your Yaris Cross?
Mine is a special edition, lots of bells and whistles. Very bossy. 70mpg.

How funny, I just got rid of my Volvo v40 and bought a Yaris cross! My Volvo was a 65 plate and the Yaris cross is a 23 plate. I bloody love it, not least because I no longer have a pending very costly DPF repair (no longer do the mileage to have a diesel)

AnItalianConnection · 20/10/2026 21:49

Pre-registered 2014 Toyota Yaris bought outright which now has 29,000 miles on the clock.

TinDogTavern · 20/10/2026 21:51

07 plate (19 years old) Mazda MX5 bought for cash two years ago for a snip with low miles and lovely bodywork because it needed a new subframe.

My absolute pride and joy after years of driving boring hatchbacks. As long as I can manoeuvre my knackered post-menopausal joints in and out of it, I’ll never drive anything other than an MX5 again. 😍

likelysuspect · 20/10/2026 21:51

Note, 2010, bought it about 8 years ago, paid £4.5k for it outright, done about 150k miles now, might have been around 80k odd when I bought it

Will run it into the ground and buy the next one the same, old, high mileage, paid outright. Done the same with all my cars.

yoursweetpotatoesarebland · 20/10/2026 21:51

anyone want to tell me what I should buy?

currently have a 12 year old Peugeot people carrier which has been very reliable but is now rattling and has over 100 k miles.

looking at getting something new in the next year.. I was thinking of getting a Citroen c5 air cross. I have teenagers and dogs so needs to be spacious and i do a lot of motorway miles. No way to charge an ev. Could buy outright at 10k or thereabouts or do a pcp .. don’t want to spend more than I need to. Anyone recommend their car?

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · 20/10/2026 21:55

When you say outright do you mean no loan? My mind is blown here!!! Fair dues!!

eewwdavid · 20/10/2026 21:57

This may be a stupid question, but how on earth do people have 10k -20k + (estimate from the cars I've seen named here) to buy outright?
I know the answer is partially that they earn more, but still, 15k just sitting there? How?!

DH and I have good salaries (now earn a low 6 figure sum between us) so save money every month and so have far more in savings than the cost of a car.

For some of us it’s ’being older and having saved up’.

Keeping the cars a long time and not paying a large monthly payment to finance a new one every 3 years certainly helps.

The Corolla replaced a 15 year old MX5. Had I been been paying even £250 a month in car payments over that period for a succession of new cars I would have been down £45K.

QwestSprout · 20/10/2026 22:20

I think this thread is a wonderful snapshot of how Mumsnet (or at least the people posting here) differ so widely to the general public. 80%~ of all new cars are sold on finance, 68% of used cars are too and the average car is either 9 or 10 years old.

nomorecheese · 20/10/2026 22:25

I have a 2020 Peugeot e208 which I love but it’s coming to the end of the PCP term. Pay £200 pcm. Going to get a Cupra Raval in the next couple of months. I like my little electric cars for pootling and only do about 3000 miles a year.

DH has a 2019 Seat Leon FR diesel that I will need to prise from his cold dead hands. He drives a lot for work and it’s done over 100k miles but he has no intention of changing it yet! Much to the kids’ annoyance. He loves it. To be fair I quite like driving it too. Kids want him to get a BMW.

ETA DHs car was bought outright.

And in 7 years time I will fit that demographic again but will be well on the way to having enough cash to buy the replacement car outright when the Corolla needs replacing.

Car finance is an insidious trap. The most expensive cars around here are not in the most affluent parts.
