Did something a bit silly at work

I regularly visit schools for my job. One school had to change premises to a larger school site whilst building works were being undertaken on the original school building.

The support staff of the new building were unpleasant and unfriendly- possibly because they didn’t want to share their building with another school.

Each week for the past nine months or so I’ve experienced unpleasantness with one particular member of staff on the front desk. Things like deliberately keeping me waiting to let me in and out of the building (she would pretend she wasn’t in the office, but I could see her in the reflection of one of the windows, she thought she was out of sight), abrupt manner, unhelpful, not passing on messages, rolling eyes because she has to get out of her chair to press a button to release the door, huffing because my mere presence is an inconvenience etc, you get the picture.

A couple of weeks ago we had a slight altercation, she was scowling as usual as I arrived and I asked her if everything was ok as she seemed quite unhappy to see me. She immediately became defensive and gave me a right mouthful so I calmly told her she maybe should develop some social skills given she was on the front desk 😳

I spoke to the head teacher of ‘my school’ who said she’d deal with it. Miraculously, over the next couple of weeks the doors were unlocked and she was not in the office as I walked passed. Result

Today was my last day as the school are moving back to their original premises after half term and I did something a little immature. In the foyer at the entrance is a photograph of all the school staff and their names, there was no-one around. Without thinking I got out my sharpie and drew a moustache and angry eyebrows on the picture of this person. Under her name I wrote ‘Miss Funsucker’. I did chuckle about it for the rest of the day but now I feel a bit bad and anxious I will get into trouble- it wouldn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work out it was me 😬

should I do nothing or should I do something - if so what? I know it’s a long shot but has anyone else done this?

Errr no, it's a public forum, you don't get to choose. Maybe don't post if you can't hack the opinions of others.

Of course I ‘can hack’ opinions of others. The point is you haven’t posted an opinion, you’ve posted a statement which is a presumption about something you don’t know. That is a judgement, not an opinion. Surely you knew that?

And you think the staff member whose photo you defaced was rude and unprofessional?

Extremely

That staff member was rude and unprofessional. In fact she was bullying, and is lucky not to have had a complaint made about her offensive behaviour.

No I’m in my 50’s, I’ve lost my filters and try and amuse myself these days

I am also laughing as am also a somewhat irrational 50 plus year old….being in your 50’s does bring a whole new meaning to the phrase “I don’t give a …” we would live in a very different world if women weren’t constrained by their hormones for so much of their lives.

So while you were on-site in a work capacity you decided to do a bit of mindless vandalism? I mean, what possessed you? I'm three years younger than you and it wouldn't even cross my mind to do something so stupid. I certainly think dark thoughts about people from time to time - that's life - but I would never go so far as to deface property. You say it will be obvious that it's you - I also find it very weird that there's no security camera - so why not fess up now and apologise? Like an adult.

Edited

Three years younger? Hahaha! That's a bit irrelevant when you're in your 40s/50s. Hardly like you're comparing the respective maturity of a five-year-old and an eight-year-old!

Also "vandalism" is a bit of a reach. It was a photo for identifying a member of the admin team, not a portrait by Velázquez.

Was it maybe...
Reckless ✔️
A bit immature ✔️
A bit OTT ✔️
Possibly damaging ✔️
Proper bloody funny ✔️
Cheered me up ✔️

Made me belly laugh ✔️

I howled reading this.
Yes I have a childish (perhaps slightly vengeful) sense of humour at times. 🤦🏻‍♀️
But by god, it was a hilarious post 😆 🤣 😂
At least bit wasn't a penis on her head!

I looked at a local newspaper one of my colleagues was reading one day and saw a photo of an ex-boyfriend who had treated me horribly. He'd won some kind of industry award. I mentioned to my colleagues what a creep he was, then went out for lunch. When I came back they'd made a photocopy of the picture, given him fangs and horns and acne, and pinned it to our noticeboard under the heading "Shithead of the year award". I felt loved and cared for 😂

OP, someone should have put in a complaint about that woman. Her behaviour was deeply unprofessional. It went beyond rudeness and into bullying. Your 'revenge' was much kinder than she deserved. I hope you don't get any aggravation about it.

I think complaints had possibly been made. On one occasion where she refused to let me in, one of the TA’s from ‘my school’ happened to be passing and let me in with her fob. She said you’ll be waiting forever if I hadn’t seen you! We exchanged a few words about said person and the TA said please do say something (to HT) ‘nobody will listen to us’. I’m fairly sure I’ve done a good service here, regardless of potential repercussions

Oh, thank you for the laugh, I needed it. What I did on my last day at a particular job was not quite as funny but I enjoyed it. I used the sticker machine that could be changed from numbers to letters and printed out a few stickers with a four digit abbreviation of my name and stuck them around the store, e.g, the corner of a till, my locker door, the fitting room cupboard etc. I also wrote 'i think, therefore I am' on cage label that said 'return to unit [no.] if found wondering'.

I'm surprised somebody who is clearly professionally successful, well-networked and accomplished thinks it's ok to pick a fight with and then "prank" a member of support staff who is probably on minimum wage. But you do you.

Yep, she's so special that she gets the right to bully somebody she sees as lower value than her.

Speaking to her like shit, scuttling off to the Head to get the woman into trouble, then using permanent marker to deface her image and write insulting things on it, inviting others like children to treat the woman with contempt - and then declaring that she's so special that everybody more important will laugh and clap at how cheeky she was.

nerysw · 19/10/2026 22:41

Thank goodness for you! Had a right laugh at that - and was mortified by all the pearl clutchers (who may be/are probably sleeping with the headmasters or their brother in laws). You didn't even draw a knob and balls - just think of the replies if you had!!!!

If there truly is no CCTV just stay schtum and hope they assume it’s one of the pupils !

Another 'sensible, grounded and highly educated' woman here.

I kidnapped a nasty plastic figure off a colleagues desk. I sent a carefully constructed ransom note with photo of nasty figure and demanded 47p in unmarked coins.

I didn't lose my job.

Surely you can see this isn’t remotely comparable to what the OP did, though? Yours is the sort of harmless prank that happens between friends, there’s no malice and no financial loss. What the OP did was to deliberately humiliate a staff member, in a place where the photo will likely be seen by many students as well as staff before it’s removed. She has damaged property which will have to be replaced, and potentially created a headache for the school management depending on how the targeted staff member reacts.

We’ll have to take the OP’s word for it as to how much in demand she is, but in most environments this sort of behaviour from an adult would just blacklist them for future work - it’s too indicative of poor judgement and a lack of self-control.

MyFriendNorman · 19/10/2026 22:47

My job is similar , I am also in my 50s, and I would never in a million years for something like this. Completely unprofessional and if "caught" would totally undermine my reputation and probably be at the very least a warning.

Were you a bully at school? Why assume it is anything personal? I imagine she lets in tens of visitors a day.

Joolsin · 19/10/2026 22:50

I think what you did was very funny, op, bonkers but funny. I like a random act of harmless vengeance!

Spiderx · 19/10/2026 22:53

Surely there will be CCTV in a school foyer. You’re of higher professional status (and education) than her and doing something targeted like that is more mean than funny. You’d already reported her - and she’d most likely been disciplined. Could have left it at that.

...but sometimes in life you just have to tw•t 'em one !

Lovephil · 19/10/2026 22:54

Pathetic.

How is it harmless? She has set out to publicly humiliate someone.

If my picture in a public place were similarly vandalised I would be deeply upset. It's not remotely the same as the colleagues who printed out the picture of an ex from the paper. The ex was never going to see that, not his colleagues.

This is not silly or funny. It's nasty.

LuckyHazelFox · 19/10/2026 22:56

The more you post the more you're coming across as a narcissist, who's just had a taste of her own medicine. Your responses don't reflect the cool caring demeanour you're trying to portray.
