Did something a bit silly at work

I regularly visit schools for my job. One school had to change premises to a larger school site whilst building works were being undertaken on the original school building.

The support staff of the new building were unpleasant and unfriendly- possibly because they didn’t want to share their building with another school.

Each week for the past nine months or so I’ve experienced unpleasantness with one particular member of staff on the front desk. Things like deliberately keeping me waiting to let me in and out of the building (she would pretend she wasn’t in the office, but I could see her in the reflection of one of the windows, she thought she was out of sight), abrupt manner, unhelpful, not passing on messages, rolling eyes because she has to get out of her chair to press a button to release the door, huffing because my mere presence is an inconvenience etc, you get the picture.

A couple of weeks ago we had a slight altercation, she was scowling as usual as I arrived and I asked her if everything was ok as she seemed quite unhappy to see me. She immediately became defensive and gave me a right mouthful so I calmly told her she maybe should develop some social skills given she was on the front desk 😳

I spoke to the head teacher of ‘my school’ who said she’d deal with it. Miraculously, over the next couple of weeks the doors were unlocked and she was not in the office as I walked passed. Result

Today was my last day as the school are moving back to their original premises after half term and I did something a little immature. In the foyer at the entrance is a photograph of all the school staff and their names, there was no-one around. Without thinking I got out my sharpie and drew a moustache and angry eyebrows on the picture of this person. Under her name I wrote ‘Miss Funsucker’. I did chuckle about it for the rest of the day but now I feel a bit bad and anxious I will get into trouble- it wouldn’t take Sherlock Holmes to work out it was me 😬

should I do nothing or should I do something - if so what? I know it’s a long shot but has anyone else done this?

Thanks OP I was a bit fed up and you have given me a great laugh 😆😆😆 the miserable face-ache thoroughly deserved it 😆 if anything comes of it, just deny it .
No CCTV = no proof 😆

Bumcake · 19/10/2026 23:09

I’d be delighted if I found this at my workplace.

Pallisers · 19/10/2026 23:13

I'd want to fire you if you worked for me - your judgement is absolutely crap and your sense of humour - jesus.

What about if it were targeted at you? Still funny, or only when it's directed at somebody with very little money?

Whats money got to do with being an utterly arsehole? She deserved it 😆

It won’t be directed at me, I’m professional and courteous. Not sure where the money comes into it, how do you know what both parties earn? Unless… is it you?

Surely you can see this isn’t remotely comparable to what the OP did, though? Yours is the sort of harmless prank that happens between friends, there’s no malice and no financial loss. What the OP did was to deliberately humiliate a staff member, in a place where the photo will likely be seen by many students as well as staff before it’s removed. She has damaged property which will have to be replaced, and potentially created a headache for the school management depending on how the targeted staff member reacts.

We’ll have to take the OP’s word for it as to how much in demand she is, but in most environments this sort of behaviour from an adult would just blacklist them for future work - it’s too indicative of poor judgement and a lack of self-control.

There is a financial loss: 47p, or the price of the plastic figure.

Saracopp · 19/10/2026 21:17

All the pictures are about 6 inches by 6 inches so quite noticeable

Oh I see. They’re individual pictures? I thought you meant one of those whole school photos where everyone is tiny and it wouldn’t have been obvious. So it sounds like it will be seen.

If you’re sure you couldn’t have been caught on camera and member of staff concerned is unpleasant to a range of people, then it very likely won’t come back to bite you. Depends if she becomes aware of it and wants to push an investigation - even then, it would only be an issue if there’s clear evidence it was you.

If the head is aware of what this member of staff is like and it’s spotted by someone sensible, you’d hope it would be removed discreetly. Perhaps a member of SLT will spot it on the way in early in the morning and deal with it. Admin staff often get in early though too!

good night everyone, thank you for the variety of responses. Need to do a bit of work now.

Made me laugh but in your haste, are you sure you spelt 'funsucker' correctly 😉. We call out cat fun thief when he gets in the middle if a game of footy with our dog and we have to stop so he doesn't get hurt. Funsucker will henceforth be his name. 😹

MrMucker · 19/10/2026 23:31

So
You didn't personally like the demeanour of the woman even though it's utterly irrelevant to your actual job (whatever it is) . You were verbally rude to her. You went and complained about her to headteacher. You were jubilant to see that she wasn't there the next time. And you defaced a picture of her in a place where everyone would see it, and added an insulting label in order to rouse sympathy with hundreds of other people who you don't even know.

Or, long story short, you are an insidious and ruthless bully.

MotherJessAndKittens · 19/10/2026 23:32

I’m sure many people will wish they were brave enough to do that, however it’s not professional and a bit mean and hurtful as you don’t know her circumstances. I think I would try to remove it if I could. Hopefully nothing will come of it but you may have to confess and apologise. Think how you would feel if that was done to your photo.

CorvusPurpureus · 19/10/2026 23:36

‘Ms Funsucker’?! That’s not even funny.

You scrawling on her photograph like an angry y8 who has had his phone confiscated is juvenile, sure, but it’s also such a peculiar thing for a professional adult to do, that it might well come across as mildly unhinged.

If you don’t intend to return to that particular school, then it’s one way to burn a bridge.

Meanwhile, being a peri who is noted on the circuit to be decidedly odd & unprofessional is your problem. You said in your OP that you were worried about getting into trouble.

Well, that’s your trouble. Future potential gigs noting that you are the sort of supposed adult that defaces colleagues’ professional photos & then boasts about it on social media.

You can’t do much about the photo graffiti, but I’d be getting this deleted if any of it happens to have, well, actually happened.

Anyahyacinth · 19/10/2026 23:36

Sounds like bullying to me, especially after you escalated the matter to the HT.

Says an awful lot about your character …you have no idea what she might be going through and did something cruel

Patriciastaser · 19/10/2026 23:37

OP you sound more and more like the sort of person who says "I'm mad, me" but is actually a complete pain in the arse. At my previous place of work what you did would have been considered bullying (rightly so) and deserving of a disciplinary.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 19/10/2026 23:37

Would that not be construed as a form of bullying.

Kittyfur · 19/10/2026 23:38

What a lot of fuss over nothing! So much pearl clutching !

I Was in the office of my local car garage when I noticed a calendar on the wall featuring topless women., left alone briefly I took a pen and drew moustache and glasses on it

I know how much somebody working on reception in a school earns. It's fuck all for a bloody hard job, made worse by absolute wankers treating them like shit because they think they are superior.

It's not pearl clutching at all to think of a school as a highly protected community where adult behaviour is supposed to model decent values to the kids there. If you send your kids to school do you wish them to learn that it's fine to deface personal pictures of somebody who works there? So that your kids then believe it's fine, in turn, to spread sny old name calling and crap about their fellow classmates if they are irritating?
What a ridiculous comparison, sorry.

Sorry, I'm not sure it was particularly funny.

You might have won me over with a witty pun on her name or similar, but that was just kind of lame and childish.😬

I can't be the only person wondering what on earth the OP's role is: visiting schools in a professional capacity but a freelancer; more work than she can cope with; knows that schools and heads talk to each other but isn't worried about them talking to each other about her stupid, unprofessional behaviour.

Some sort of sales role? I don't believe a peripatetic teacher would behave like this.
