Adults at petting zoos/farms/kids days out

1000 replies

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 19/10/2026 12:42

Has anyone else noticed a massive uptick in grown adults (many in late teens and 20s) going on days out aimed at kids/young families? I’m finding it increasingly irritating - small children having to queue behind grown adults to stroke rabbits or see tanks of fish.

(Exception where there is clearly a disability at play)

There are different groups of people and each group has as much right to be there as the other.
I take my teenage son in his wheelchair, and you'd probably be annoyed with me for being there.
I might inconvenience people if they need to step to the side to let us past, but equally I have to be patient and constantly on my guard for toddlers running in front of the wheelchair.
It's just about everyone tolerating one another. We've all paid for the experience and we all deserve a pleasant day out. Every single one of us.

I love going on the swings in the park. If I’m having a stressful day working from home, I have been known to hop on a swing whilst taking walking in the park next door to clear my head. Brings out some endorphins and helps reset my mood before I go back to my desk. Granted this is typically at lunchtime when kids are in school. But why on earth shouldn’t I be allowed to do something fun for 5 mins, now that I’m old enough to pay the council tax that pays for said swings.

What size is your bum?
I'm a 16 but my ass is too fat for swings, the chains dig in. They really should make plus size swings?

It's healthy for children to learn patience and waiting in lines, and I say this as a parent myself. I also frequented these places when I was was first going out with my now dh. Lovely date days that didn't have to only be restaurants or bars. When we had a tragic loss three years ago our twin babies died the week of their birth. I couldn't face it for a long time but on their first anniversary 2 years ago when I was newly pregnant with their sibling we both went together to a wildlife park, the one where aiI had dreamed taking them. We'll probably go again on their anniversary next month. Granny will mind our little ones as its a day where we can just reflect.

Oh bless you 🩷

Lol hardly. My 18 year old was rather worried his childhood would be extended because he was desperate to start uni and travel and go to festivals and was concerned he'd just be stuck at home for another year.

Well DS was 15 that is still a child.

Daftypants · 19/10/2026 16:12

i think the OP is getting confused between “ childish “ “ childlike “ and animal lover .

I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope that's a healing experience for you.💐

I do have a teen who loves going to petting zoo's. But even if I didn't have a child or nieces and nephews to take I'd absolutely still go!! It's ridiculous to think this is only for children.

Indeed. Though they can't be any worse than adults who play with little toy soldiers. My ex, brought me back to his house once to show me this thing he called Warhammer and, I never got the ick so fast in my life 🤢

Warhammer is not a kid's activity. It is far too expensive.

I love animals but hate kids. Why are kids allowed in these places, spoiling it for all the unaccompanied adults who just want to pet the bunnies in peace?

Drinking alone, cycling in lycra, assembling furniture, corporate away days, calling HMRC, picking up a prescription, relationship councelling, going to currys to buy a new fridge.

Haha. I've done three of those in the last week (the fridge, the prescription and the HMRC) and they were head spinningly wild. Really felt like I was living my best life and definitely wouldn't have swapped any of them for a cuddle with a rabbit or a spin on the teacups. Much.

Ask the zoo, how should I know what their rules are

I think you know what she means.

Christ, like life isn't hard, worrying and/or boring enough sometimes, without Sister Mary Funsponge here hoisting on her judgy pants and deciding that no-one should be silly or enjoy themselves in a way she feels to be inappropriate Hmm

I'm not sure petting zoos are just for kids.

However we did decade ago now go to a family aimed center with primary aged kids - there was an activity to queue for so we let them do it together. Whole way adult grandchildren all adults in 20s at least and an older woman 70+ were arses to them in queue apaprently and tried to cut their turn at thing short. I did wonder why they were there TBH - seemed very young for them.

We still go out to things with teen and grown kids - some venue have changed - we still do msusums and castles etc.

There is a tick toc thing of what I'm doing vs my parents and that's both funny and depressing - parents were married kids house professional jobs same age kids are acting very young asking for pocket money and behaving much younger.

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily get information from tiktok.

Moonnstarz · 19/10/2026 16:31

I love animals, we don't have pets. If I see a farm, zoo or petting zoo then it would interest me to visit. If I am paying the full price then I expect the full experience. Often adults are charged more anyway so that would make me ensure I was ready for whatever the activity is.

Same as a child that loves football, they might want to visit a stadium or match, though to me maybe that is an adult activity.
Both adults and children go to theme parks too.
If adults go to Legoland should they therefore let all children go first and wait endlessly?

Surely it's important children recognise they are not the centre of everyone's world and that queuing is a natural thing in a variety of settings. I would also teach my children to be kind. Sounds like you are the sort of person who takes the mic out of people for not following the crowds.

Balloonhearts · 19/10/2026 16:31

So if people aren't able to have a pet of their own, they shouldn't get to interact with them at all, by your logic.

Stop being a such a miserable mare. The world doesn't revolve around your kids. There wouldn't even BE petting zoos if adults weren't paying the full price entry fees that subsidise your children.

Haven't read all this, but I do feel sorry for people who have forgotten what it's like to be a child. To wonder at the little things in life. A dewdrop sparkling in the sun, a wild flower growing in the crack in the pavement, looking at the night sky, petting an animal, getting a fit of the giggles. I might be nearly 80 in years, but there's a very active 8 year old still inside me.

I have to yell at the parakeets to be quiet because they're so noisy.
I always say "Good Morning Mr Magpie, Good Morning Mrs Magpie" because you have to.
Pigeons I mostly mumble "get out the way" at.

No, no... someone once told me that pigeons are the dogs of the bird world in that they quite like humans and I've been extra lovely to them ever since.

notasorangeashelooks · 19/10/2026 16:36

This thread has reminded me that I need to book tickets to my local petting farm (adult only day). No one is ever too old to be near goats!

Theres no age limit on fun. My dad and I recently went to The Deep in hull, neither of us had been and he had actually never been in an aquarium (didn’t have the money to take me us as kids). It was actually really fun and it was funny seeing a 72 year old man in absolute awe of all the fish. Sometimes it’s nice to spend your adult money catching up on some experiences you maybe missed out on as a child or even just things you enjoyed.
