To think playing your own music around the hotel swimming pool is really selfish?

Currently on an early half term break with DH, DD and DA (both under 10). We’re staying in a lovely family friendly hotel (heavily advertised as being a family resort) with a pool that has a poolside bar. For the last two days, a group of maybe 4 families has congregated around the pool and have brought their own music speaker and are playing loud rap music while they float in the pool, drinking continuously. I was about to go and - politely - ask them to turn their music off yesterday (it has a lot of swearing and lyrics not appropriate for a family friendly resort) when another guest got there before me and they got very aggressive/ abusive towards him, telling him he was a loser and should ‘get a life, we’re on holiday and enjoying ourselves’. My DH went to the reception to ask if someone could have a word with them but was told that the staff don’t want to be shouted at either so they won’t. AIBU to think this is totally selfish behaviour? Why do they think everyone else wants to listen to their music? Both days so far they have largely ignored their own children and as the day has worn on got increasingly more drunk/ loud/ sweary. What’s wrong with people?!

A hotel without a pool is the best bet. Swim in the sea folks it's good for you ha ha.

I've given up hotels with pools completely now, they attract the wrong type of people you see ahem.... sunbed robbers, all day drinkers, feral kids, splashing, noise, loud music, selfish bastards. 😊

I know what you're saying but pool is safer, not full of sea creatures and no salt/sand

Playing your own music on loud speaker anywhere in public should be punishable by death!!!!!!

swimming pool, on the train, on the bus, at the beach, just so so annoying and selfish

NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO HEAR IT! IN PUBLIC USE HEADPHONES!!!!

totally with you on this - I thought I was the only one, I feeli like flinging headphones at people!

I know, I was kidding (kind of!). The pool might not have sea creatures or salt/sand, but it has other creatures around it, and sometimes it's hard to know which is worse 😊

Rap isn't music, though.

RaggedRocks · Yesterday 13:48

Its just noise

Whenever I've been in these types of situations I've wondered what would happen if everyone else present also turned on their device and played music, or also started talking very loudly on their phone to someone.
Would the original offender tell them all to be quiet?

He doesn't listen to loud rap music with swearing and he said he'd keep it low but absolutely no way.....he won't ever suggest it again that's for sure

The very fact he needed you to say to no to him, the fact it even entered his mind as a possibility - it would have no doubt been the straw the broke the camel’s back for me!

I had someone do it on a plane once, I shit you not. I thought the music was actually being played across the whole plane through its speaker system, till my colleague said shall I ask to get thst turned down, I was utterly dumbfounded to realise the man behind me was sitting with a speaker on his lap booming out Nikita by Elton John, cabin crew told him to switch it off.

Let's be honest, everyone knows exactly the type of people they are and where they come from!

I can literally picture them - tattoos, beer bellies, slightly sunburnt, kids called stuff like Gracie-May........ And yes I am extremely judgemental so don't bother to reply to tell me so!

MissFajita · Yesterday 14:08

General selfish and rude behaviour has really got worse. You see it across the board in things like driving, theatres, gyms, parents at schools, public transport, cinemas and especially restaurants. I can’t get my head around going to a restaurant and having a full volume FaceTime conversation or letting your children watch full volume tick tocks. Is there actually any point in reasoning with people like that? I just can’t see them being able to understand.

My kids get 2 weeks' half term in October as their school puts a whole year's worth of inset days into a week. So we can get cheaper holidays in the week starting today when most kids are still in school for another week. The OP might have the same.

I wish our primary school would put all the inset days into one week. I asked the headteacher, but she said they “wouldn’t be allowed to”. I didn’t get the chance to ask who wouldn’t allow it and am still wondering.

This happened to us with just one couple blasting music out. We quietly asked the lifeguard to get them to use headphones. They turned off the music but for a solid hour they went in the pool throwing the girl up in the air , screaming and splashing loudly. It was worse than the music and definitely planned as revenge for whoever complained. Some people are just dead ignorant.

Kipperandarthur · Yesterday 14:20

Glad that it was dealt with, but the duty manager should have been on it immediately and stopped it.

Unfortunately, some people are arrogant and ignorant and extremely selfish.
In this day and age with the array of options available to privately listen to music without bothering anybody else it's just the pits.

This it , get the crew to deal with it . They have tactics . Ask them , tell them , then they make them in an assertive manner.

Pity them that they actively chose to waste an hour of their holiday deliberately being angry and winding themselves up even more to get back at someone they didn't even know and would never see again; when they were in the wrong to start with.

They could have spent it having fun, sunbathing and feeling the warm sun on their face, reading a good book, ordering a fancy cocktail.... I can't imagine they'll look back and be pleased with their choice.

Edited

I’d love for this to happen at our school too. It would be so useful.

Christ! The audacity...
At least it was a half decent song though so I would probably have enjoyed it for a while lol

Put a 1* review on TripAdvisor. Then go and talk to them again and say you'll take it down if they sort out the music.

Most hotels are very invested in keeping their TripAdvisor rating up.
