To think playing your own music around the hotel swimming pool is really selfish?

Currently on an early half term break with DH, DD and DA (both under 10). We’re staying in a lovely family friendly hotel (heavily advertised as being a family resort) with a pool that has a poolside bar. For the last two days, a group of maybe 4 families has congregated around the pool and have brought their own music speaker and are playing loud rap music while they float in the pool, drinking continuously. I was about to go and - politely - ask them to turn their music off yesterday (it has a lot of swearing and lyrics not appropriate for a family friendly resort) when another guest got there before me and they got very aggressive/ abusive towards him, telling him he was a loser and should ‘get a life, we’re on holiday and enjoying ourselves’. My DH went to the reception to ask if someone could have a word with them but was told that the staff don’t want to be shouted at either so they won’t. AIBU to think this is totally selfish behaviour? Why do they think everyone else wants to listen to their music? Both days so far they have largely ignored their own children and as the day has worn on got increasingly more drunk/ loud/ sweary. What’s wrong with people?!

Very selfish. What’s early half term?

My kids get 2 weeks' half term in October as their school puts a whole year's worth of inset days into a week. So we can get cheaper holidays in the week starting today when most kids are still in school for another week. The OP might have the same.

Yep, we had this exact thing on about 3 occasions this summer, it was definitely a certain ‘type’ of family. Really irritating/off putting.

I think you mean ‘yobs’.

Your hotel pool stays open late! Ones I’ve been to close by 7pm at the latest. This, and selfish inconsiderate people, are why we now go for a villa instead. I do miss the people watching though.

Exactly. In all the lovely hotels I have stayed in recent years the pool closes by 7pm latest

Well yes but does that narrow it down to British?

No. Added to which it is embarrassing how fluent other countries are in English compare with vice versa

DH suggested taking his speaker to the pool last year as there was no music being played. Absolutely not. I made it quite clear he'd be sitting by himself if he did. Who wants to listen to someone else's music??

Oh gawd, really? My jaw would have hit the floor if any boyfriend or husband had suggested this. I can’t imagine ever being with one that would tbh

pavementpolice · Yesterday 10:36

He doesn't listen to loud rap music with swearing and he said he'd keep it low but absolutely no way.....he won't ever suggest it again that's for sure

Playing your own music on loud speaker anywhere in public should be punishable by death!!!!!!

swimming pool, on the train, on the bus, at the beach, just so so annoying and selfish

NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO HEAR IT! IN PUBLIC USE HEADPHONES!!!!

Playing your own music on loud speaker anywhere in public should be punishable by death!!!!!!

I think that's a bit harsh. For a first offence, cleaning out the pool with their tongues would suffice.

What country are they from? I wonder if anyone can guess.

It depends where the OP is on holiday tbh. Lots of countries have some terrible tourists - if she's in Bali, it's probably Australians, for example.

This happened when we went on an AI last year in the Canaries. Mostly families and everyone was pretty quiet then on the third day a rough couple from London turned up and started blasting shit tinny music from a speaker. A German guy approached to ask them to stop and she wanted to start a fight with him - so embarrassing.

Local musician playing guitar hints at spain maybe?

We broke up for half term yesterday, I assume they mean they did also but flew out a day or two before school actually finished.

leperol · Yesterday 10:57

A hotel without a pool is the best bet. Swim in the sea folks it's good for you ha ha.

I've given up hotels with pools completely now, they attract the wrong type of people you see ahem.... sunbed robbers, all day drinkers, feral kids, splashing, noise, loud music, selfish bastards. 😊

momager22 · Yesterday 11:00

I’d be fuming - it’s extremely irritating and would ruin my holiday, and that’s absolutely pathetic behaviour from the hotel staff - speak to the duty manager, raise an official complaint, leave reviews all over websites if you have to.

Keepitsimples · Yesterday 11:10

we have been broken up for a week and another week to go (the school has to adjust it this year due to school events)

This annoys me. Why do they think everyone wants to listen to their musicConfused

And it is always shit music too.

LlynTegid · Yesterday 11:35

I am glad the hotel acting albeit not immediately. Better still would have been requiring them to leave the hotel.

Pubs in several towns have a scheme where banned from one means banned from all. Pity that possibly GDPR prevents hotels and holiday resorts doing the same thing.

PumpkinLightup · Yesterday 11:45

Instead of telling them yourself get the hotel management to do it . It then comes from a place of authority and cuts out bad feeling and aggression towards you that could spoil the rest of your holiday.

Alwayswonderedwhy · Yesterday 11:54

This sort of behaviour seems to becoming the norm for some reason. Not the same but I was sat chilling in a hotel reception last while attending an event. Just wanted 10 mins peace and quiet and some bloke sat near me watching tiktok at full volume. He was totally oblivious to his surroundings. Same on public transport too.
Doesn't sound like a great hotel if they're not willing to speak to the family you're dealing with.

MyballsareSandy2015 · Yesterday 11:59

I was on a boat trip opposite a young bloke and his gf watching loud tiktoks on their phone …. I was so tempted to grab the phone and lob it into the sea.

The same couple decided at a stop that the 1pm return to the boat time didn’t apply to them …. everyone had boarded the boat and they were still sunbathing. The crew had to go over.

They packed up their stuff and sauntered back to the boat in such a leisurely way, gave no fucks whatsoever 😡

I think the OP implied they are British but I could be wrong

I'm thinking Brits (I'm also a Brit btw but not a chavvy, selfish one!).
