To think playing your own music around the hotel swimming pool is really selfish?

Currently on an early half term break with DH, DD and DA (both under 10). We’re staying in a lovely family friendly hotel (heavily advertised as being a family resort) with a pool that has a poolside bar. For the last two days, a group of maybe 4 families has congregated around the pool and have brought their own music speaker and are playing loud rap music while they float in the pool, drinking continuously. I was about to go and - politely - ask them to turn their music off yesterday (it has a lot of swearing and lyrics not appropriate for a family friendly resort) when another guest got there before me and they got very aggressive/ abusive towards him, telling him he was a loser and should ‘get a life, we’re on holiday and enjoying ourselves’. My DH went to the reception to ask if someone could have a word with them but was told that the staff don’t want to be shouted at either so they won’t. AIBU to think this is totally selfish behaviour? Why do they think everyone else wants to listen to their music? Both days so far they have largely ignored their own children and as the day has worn on got increasingly more drunk/ loud/ sweary. What’s wrong with people?!

I hate people who do this. Selfish thick morons.

Doseofreality · 16/10/2026 18:30

Throw the speaker in the pool.

if you haven’t got the no fucks to give to do that, dive bomb in to the pool and splash water towards it.

RandomUserName12345 · 16/10/2026 18:31

Talk to staff.

Suspicioustoenails · 16/10/2026 18:31

Yep they are ignorant and selfish.
And while I understand that the staff do not want to be shouted at, their absolute refusal to do anything is out of order.
I get that a minimum wage receptionist does not need to put themselves in the firing line, but somewhere there's a manager that needs to go and do their job.

TheJoyousHiker · 16/10/2026 18:32

Go back to reception and ask to speak to the manager on duty.

I think we’ll have to. The pool area is crowded with young families, it’s clearly not the right kind of place to be acting like this but they don’t seem to care. I just can’t fathom some people’s total ‘couldn’t care less as long as I’m enjoying myself’ attitude.

It’s just so intentional to bring an actual boom box type speaker to the pool and just brazenly play your own music 🤯

Incredibly selfish. Maybe if all the guests round on them. The hotel are being pretty lazy too though.

Must he a fairly shit hotel.

The only AI holiday I’ve been on has lots of signs around the pool saying no music. They enforced it as well. This was adult only resort.
Was Jet2 - Lanzarote

Yes! There is a local musician playing guitar music. I get it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s so much less offensive than what these people are playing

It's selfish but you get morons everywhere. It's the hotel response that's really infuriating. Of course no one wants to be shouted at, but it's part and parcel of running a hotel and it's their responsibility to deal with unruly guests.

singthing · 16/10/2026 18:44

Any chance you can accidentally boot their speaker into the pool as you walk past? Perhaps a group of rambunctious kids distracting you?

And so this boom box is competing with the musician ?

Just stay somewhere really nice where the hotel management care about their guests.

FullOfLemons · 16/10/2026 18:49

Do us a favour and name the hotel please

TokyoSushi · 16/10/2026 18:55

Yep, we had this exact thing on about 3 occasions this summer, it was definitely a certain ‘type’ of family. Really irritating/off putting.

caffelattetogo · 16/10/2026 18:57

Oh goodness - why are you all putting up with that? I’d be in the manager’s office right now. Have you booked though an agency? I’d be complaining to them too.

Bubugameshot · 16/10/2026 19:03

I can remember a German guy complaining about the noise from children playing in an outdoor hotel pool (not screaming, just children having fun) and the hotel manager came out and asked the families to be quieter. So I'm amazed that they're getting away with this in your hotel.

BCBird · 16/10/2026 19:18

This annoys me. Why do they think everyone wants to listen to their musicConfused

Lolabear38 · 16/10/2026 19:20

Update - I’ve just been in and spoken to the day manager. He’s told me he will ‘deal with it’ so will see what happens!

OP posts:
Lolabear38 · 16/10/2026 19:22

It is actually a very nice hotel for those asking, and was not cheap. I think we were unlucky yesterday when we went inside to complain to staff who were reluctant to do anything about it as the person I spoke to today had a very different attitude. Will update with what happens

Playing your own music on loud speaker anywhere in public should be punishable by death!!!!!!

swimming pool, on the train, on the bus, at the beach, just so so annoying and selfish

NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO HEAR IT! IN PUBLIC USE HEADPHONES!!!!
