To think playing your own music around the hotel swimming pool is really selfish?

Currently on an early half term break with DH, DD and DA (both under 10). We’re staying in a lovely family friendly hotel (heavily advertised as being a family resort) with a pool that has a poolside bar. For the last two days, a group of maybe 4 families has congregated around the pool and have brought their own music speaker and are playing loud rap music while they float in the pool, drinking continuously. I was about to go and - politely - ask them to turn their music off yesterday (it has a lot of swearing and lyrics not appropriate for a family friendly resort) when another guest got there before me and they got very aggressive/ abusive towards him, telling him he was a loser and should ‘get a life, we’re on holiday and enjoying ourselves’. My DH went to the reception to ask if someone could have a word with them but was told that the staff don’t want to be shouted at either so they won’t. AIBU to think this is totally selfish behaviour? Why do they think everyone else wants to listen to their music? Both days so far they have largely ignored their own children and as the day has worn on got increasingly more drunk/ loud/ sweary. What’s wrong with people?!

This annoys me. Why do they think everyone wants to listen to their musicConfused

This, 💯! And while it shouldn’t matter what music it is, it’s especially selfish when it’s sweary, loud, misogynistic rap music in a family hotel!

If they don’t sort it, start asking for refunds/money off etc, and loudly so others will ask too. They might not bother to act until they start getting a lot of complaints and demands for money off.

Ok…. The manager came out and spoke to them. I couldn’t hear exactly what was said but there was a lot of gesticulating from the men in the group. They’ve now turned the music off and people around the pool actually started cheering 😂 they don’t look happy so will see how long it lasts.

Any chance you can accidentally boot their speaker into the pool as you walk past? Perhaps a group of rambunctious kids distracting you?

I was going to suggest an unfortunate trip that knocked it into the pool.

Spilling a sweet, sticky drink over it might work, too.

Great result. Utter tossers

Playing your own music anywhere in public is incredibly selfish. I absolutely hate it.

And the new fashion of having every phone conversation in public on loud speaker.

WTF!

The only AI holiday I’ve been on has lots of signs around the pool saying no music. They enforced it as well. This was adult only resort.
Was Jet2 - Lanzarote

I'm in adults only resort in Lanzarote right now, what are the chances, probably not the same one but it made me chuckle.

TiredMummma · 16/10/2026 23:19

Very selfish. What’s early half term?

Taylor790 · 16/10/2026 23:22

Early half term break? You mean a term time holiday lol never heard it referred to as that!

Brilliant. People like this are just the worst. I am glad people cheered. Buy the manager a drink!
on our holiday this summer we started to get text alerts from the hotel in their app about people leaving towels at 6 am then not using the beds until past lunch, I was so secretly pleased, I love it when selfish people get their selfish plans scuppered.

Anonanonay · 16/10/2026 23:41

Glad you got a decent result. Hotel was bang out of order. I'd have threatened a formal complaint followed by shitty social media reviews. You can still keep that up your sleeve if this intervention doesn't resolve it.

What country are they from? I wonder if anyone can guess.

There’s rude and inconsiderate twats in every country on earth, so that would be a very long guessing game!

People like this are vile. Imagine being completely unaware and uncaring of your surroundings. The problem with people like this is they have zero shame and zero shits to give. The fact everyone cheered won’t deter them. It will make them more determined to get their own way.

There appear to be more and more people like this.

People are so shameless, ignorant and selfish these days
Hope they keep it off

I imagine it means they started their holiday early before half term ‘officially’ began.

The conversions on speaker phone boil my blood and I sit and give them a death stare until it pisses me off to the point where I can't take anymore then I start making it known how selfish they are , especially if we are sat on the bus, its ALWAYS the bus. Like people can't just sit there without talking to someone on their phone. Grrrrr it winds me up and I struggle to keep quiet about it.

I think the OP implied they are British but I could be wrong

Why are the staff allowing this?

This is why I don’t holiday in hotels or go camping.

Offer your opinion on whatever they're talking about. If they're on speaker they clearly intend the conversation to be a group activity!

My kids get 2 weeks' half term in October as their school puts a whole year's worth of inset days into a week. So we can get cheaper holidays in the week starting today when most kids are still in school for another week. The OP might have the same.
