How to handle this

Currently staying at a “naice” hotel in Spain. My bored 15 year old went up to our room to chill for an hour. He’s can’t sit still ( possible ADD, undergoing assessment) and started gently dribbling a ball around the room apparently. It was 1.30 pm.

I was down by the pool ( so don’t actually know how annoying it must have been, but from previous experience it isn’t loud, just a thumping) and came up to check on him. I was accosted by a guest from the room next door, just as I arrived who was very confrontational and annoyed. Apparently it was disturbing his afternoon nap.

I told him I would deal with it, and opened the door to the room. Son and ball are standing there. The guest did not come in to the room but stood at the door and proceeded to tell off my son.

we left together to do an activity. When I returned an hour later there was a note from reception asking me to contact them immediately. Apparently the guest had made an official complaint about him.

for info. I’m on my own here with my son. No other adults. And he was a bit intimidating

Yet another example of someone using ADD to excuse thoughtless and poor behaviour. He’s 15, not 5, no ball games indoors, especially when staying in a hotel with other people is a basic rule to live by surely?

Maisymouse2 · 16/10/2026 03:21

Apologies when he was outside your door?
Some people lack abilty to be able to handle kicking abd tapping nosies...a ball inside not wise.
No big deal really..id hope for the neighbouring person once its stopped.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/10/2026 03:26

It must have been annoying for someone to complain and a fifteen year should know better than to play football inside a room. Thumping sounds pretty noisy to me.

NiftyKoala · 16/10/2026 03:37

At 15 he truly should know better.

EdithBond · 16/10/2026 05:15

I’d have apologised to the guest and so would my DS (unprompted by me).

He shouldn’t be kicking a ball in an hotel room. Though mine sometimes messed with balls if they were there and had to be reminded not to do so in the house.

People should be able to rest while on holiday, especially during siesta.

KookyFish · 16/10/2026 05:17

A football on tiled floors, jeez, I would be at your door telling you off to! How ignorant.

Cultural siesta aspect? A lot of people like a snooze when they’re relaxing on holiday, it’s not weird.

Exactly
Love a siesta on holiday

Complain about the intimidating and aggressive guest at the door to your room. Ask he be moved or you be moved.

And perhaps mention to your son that the constant thumping of a ball in a bedroom is not acceptable, regardless of the time of day.

Sherararara · 16/10/2026 07:52

Honestly don’t get the point of some posts like this. You do what all of us would have done which is apologise to the guest and hotel and make sure your son stops dribbling his ball in the room. Theres nothing to get opinions on?

PeloMom · 15/10/2026 17:28

Dribbling in a room is never ok. If he’s bored he can take his ball and go play with it outside.
id be raging too if I paid for a holiday to rest and instead had to listen to someone’s quite unreasonable behaviour for an hour! If you think he’s old enough to be left alone you should also teach him what’s acceptable behaviour and what isn’t.

This. There is no way it was a ' gentle dribbling'. You seem very unfazed that your ds has been an absolute nuisance.

This response is indicative of today’s lax parenting! Shifting the blame away from the ‘child’.
Teach your DS not to play football indoors. The neighbouring guest telling him off is a natural consequence to his crap behaviour. He needs to apologise and take his ball outside. ADHD or not, his behaviour was unacceptable.

What does naice mean?

Naice is a term people use when they mean expensive but want to seem as though they are not boasting. It’s annoying.

SerendipityCat · 15/10/2026 17:36

Amusing - if you happen to know the backstory - Mumsnet speak for “nice”.

Agree but it has more of a meaning than nice.

Ham is nice, but if I ask for the naice ham I'm expecting deli quality not supermarket own.

No it isn't. - I find it more annoying when strangers think others are boasting on an anonymous forum- that is a bit weird.

babycarehub · 16/10/2026 08:10

yesss

Anarchy99 · 16/10/2026 08:14

He shouldn’t be dribbling the ball in a hotel room. If you make a complaint about the other guest, you will just look like you are retaliating.

Just accept you/he were in the wrong and carry on with your holiday.

mrsm43s · 16/10/2026 08:23

You weirdly don't seem to be accepting that it was you and your son who were completely in the wrong here. Now you know that your son is unable to behave when left unsupervised, please make sure you supervise him at all times to make sure you don't ruin more people's enjoyment of their holiday.

manysausages · 16/10/2026 08:37

Goodness! People really need to be told not to play football in an hotel room?

I wasn’t aware of the issue until that precise moment. haven’t left him unsupervised since. We did apologise to management and I have removed his ball.

Yes, I suppose this man was only expecting kids under 5, who wouldn't be on their own. Before anyone says he might well be homeschooled, as UK schools aren't on holiday now, that's obviously fine if OP chooses to homeschool, but the man probably did expect British 15 year olds (if that's what he is) wouldn't be there.

It’s mid term in Scotland

Then job done. Try to ensure neither of you cause any further nuisance and enjoy your holiday.

I am amazed that he thought it was okay to do this though. Does he do it in your house?

sunandpeonies · 16/10/2026 08:49

Your son was wrong. And the annoyed guest was right. You don’t know where she’s travelled from or if she’s ill and needs a nap.
No-one needs a football being played with next door at any time.
You get your son to apologize and you buy them a drink when you see them.

SoThatsTheWayItIs · 16/10/2026 08:51

If you had bothered to apologise to the guy in the moment then he may not have escalated it to management. Personally I don't think he was OTT and if he was intimidating then good as it's clearly had the intended impact and you and your son won't be bothering guests with your noise for the rest of the holiday!

User454545454546565 · 16/10/2026 08:52

Weird thread. Even in a not-nice hotel this behaviour would have annoyed almost everybody.

Only possible explanation for me is your son's being raised somewhere the parks aren't safe to play in. What do your neighbours at home say when he kicks the football around the house?

NortieTortie · 16/10/2026 09:09

Yes, he was OTT to have a go at you, then your son, then complain to the hotel over one incident without giving you chance to sort it.

Ideally you would have apologised in the moment. Still, you know it won't happen again. Don't let it spoil your holiday!
