People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

I'm not a breakfast person at all, so a holiday breakfast is usually skipped or I go for something light.

You would have been appalled by my mast holiday in Turkey OP - I ate the same bland meal every day. Because I was pre surgery and was in agony if I wasn't careful.

Hope that helps you unhoick your judgy pants.

Hotel breakfasts are buffets. Nobody is only having cornflakes. They’re having them as a little starter before they move on to the continental bread, cheese, pastries etc.

Also, supermarkets the world over all sell cereal, so clearly people outside the UK also eat it.

I’ve just come back from a trip to Africa. In most of the hotels and lodges we stayed at, we were usually the only British people and everyone else was from other parts of Europe. I can assure you plenty of them were eating cereal at breakfast.

Finally, you don’t get a medal for eating a croissant. You’re not some kind of sophisticated world traveller just because you select yogurt instead of toast. It’s laughably gauche to think otherwise.

If im on holiday I have the lot, cornflakes, then bacon, eggs, beans, toast, fruit juice and toast and jam or marmalade. I love it because I wouldn't have that at home and it sets me up for the rest of my day until evening wish I were on me Hols now!

This is me too. The cereal is my starter! I also take a pastry up to my room, in case I get hungry during the evening too.

Does it matter what other people do?

Fizbosshoes · Today 10:06

Has anyone said they couldnt possibly eat more than 5 cornflakes, and that would fill them up for the whole holiday, yet....?

Weve lost sight if what a normal breakfast is....

(A bowl would feed their family of 4 for a fornight!)

She won't. She'll be policing food intake.

Which is not a problem, if it is her own!

No, that's bound to happen. Have we lost sight of a healthy portion?

Yes! But only if they're English.

I don't think OP is being judgy, the comments are harsh.

When I go on holiday I always eat what the locals etc. so in Asia that's rice dishes for breakfast.

I am also baffled by why people go to experience different cultures and then eat cornflakes. It's a fair enough question, coming from a place of curiosity I guess. Surely asking the question and reading the replies is how we learn to understand other people's perspectives??

You want to hear what Italians, Spanish, French people and lots of other cultures would say if they were served up 'local' dishes for breakfast or any other meals, particularly the older generations when staying abroad.

squarecrow · Today 10:12

Maybe they eat croissants for breakfast every day at home and then they go on holiday and think “Ooh, cornflakes! I’ve not had them in years!”

LeopardPrintEverything · Today 10:12

I sometimes love a wee bowl of cereal on holiday as somehow the ‘forrin’ milk makes it taste better!

LBFseBrom · Today 10:15

Maybe they like cornflakes. It's nobody else's business anyway.

ViciousCurrentBun · Today 10:21

Early mornings when the stomach is waking up for people would be why I think lots like something familiar. I don’t eat corn flakes at all but DH does. The person congratulating themselves having Asian breakfast, guess what half my family are Asian and though I myself have eaten Asian breakfast many a time I just don’t fancy congee or milk tea or whatever sometimes and love myself some marmite on toast and plain old Yorkshire tea.

It’s good to embrace local culture but it doesn’t make anyone better if they eat local food.

@Ponoka7 most upset stomachs when abroad come from poor hand hygiene, drinking the local water, eating fruit that doesn't come with a rind/skin eating raw veg/salads that are washed in local water, or ice in drinks. There was a research study that found that a lot of the germs came from the handling of local currency (if old notes). Obviously checking for fully cooked food too, as you would at home.

I always sanitise my hands before eating, and avoid the things I just mentioned as high risk and have never had a bad stomach abroad. I always eat street food as well, and don't shy away from spice.

Education, common sense and taking precautions avoids the vast majority of upset stomachs (although nothing is 100%)

A lot of upset stomachs don't come from poor hygiene though. Many people have delicate stomachs that are capable of being upset without this factor - eg sufferers of IBS, coeliacs, intolerances to name but one or two. A poster above mentioned the unsettling effects of flying, or sometimes just a change of water will suffice. It's more common than you think, especially as you get to middle age.

Hit and bloody miss? The cheek of some people.

😤

burnoutbabe · Today 10:30

Another factor being the type of holiday

if I am on a relaxed beach holiday then yes a large long breakfast is great.

if I am off to theme parks or a day site seeing I don’t want a massive big breakfast sitting awkwardly in my stomach all morning. I want something light -so cereal as normally do in uk.

Human beings are creatures of habit.

I agree! It all seems a bit dull and boring (especially considering the cost of a hotel breakfast….) I always love the spread and variety and treat it as an
Indulgence I wouldn’t ordinarily have. But maybe others have tricky digestion or similar

SabrinaBricklayer · Today 10:39

Cornflakes are American so it’s only the Americans that are not allowed to eat them outside America. It’s technically foreign food for us English. HTH.

Don’t most people have more than just one item at a hotel buffet breakfast?
