People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

Oblongtriangle · Today 07:04

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

I am English. I only eat stodgy English food, like all my fellow Englanders.

Then you were just referencing yourself not eating other cuisines, rather than ‘the English’ as a whole. You are still spouting nonsense by adding ‘all my fellow English. I don’t eat stodgy food.

Or the other recent one where a poster found food being offered at parties to be baffling 😂

I missed that one!

I wonder if it was the person I saw once who was always baffled by hot chocolate. Probably best that people who don't understand hot liquids stay away from them.

Was @DebbieSavage talking nonsense? What is nonsense about it?

I’m responding to you. You only eat stodge so you’ve decided everyone else English does as well.

No, like @DebbieSavage says, this is true of "the English" but not "the Scots" or "the Welsh". It's just a fact. Why can't you understand?

It’s fascinating what some posters on MN find baffling. 😂

No, I didn't decide it. Debbie decided it. Debbie discovered it and posted it. I'm just agreeing with her.

Some of them really don't get irony, that's for sure...

I hate savoury food first thing in the morning and a hotel with a nice waffle/french toast/pancakes I can order instead of the ones sitting luke-warm under a warming lamp are very rare to find.

So I do what I normally do, yoghurt with fruit and some oats. I will eat pastries and cake though, something I don't do at home.

I still dream about the hotel breakfast at Lake Garda this year, two tables with 6-8 different cakes and biscuits each day, it was amazing.

A bigger boy did it and ran away!

There are loads of things on a hotel buffet breakfast I don’t routinely eat at home. I never buy juice, cereal, cold meats and sliced cheese, tiny pastries, cake, croissants, flavoured yoghurt, but I eat them all on holiday. Someone who eats a lot of croissants and eats croissants on holidays is less “adventurous” than someone who never eats cornflakes and then eats them on holiday. This only works if you use the basic foods available in all UK supermarkets as a basis for your adventure scale. I’m both Asian and Scottish but have lived most of my life in England so not sure where I fall on the “boring stodge won’t eat forrin food” diet scale but I can say with confidence that close to 100% of the breakfast cereals I have eaten have been in hotels or the homes of friends. I only ever have an elaborate hotel style buffet breakfast if I’m hosting a leisurely morning event - most days it’s a tomato and scrambled egg wrap (with soy sauce and shaoxing wine - available in English supermarkets even though English people never eat forrin food - funny that).

Because it's not true of the English. Have you come across Debbie before?

Debbie is a bloke and not a serious poster. When he's on form he is very good but he is a bit hit and miss.

Aren’t cornflakes pretty well international?

Vitrolinsanity · Today 09:57

I never eat cereal unless I see it laid out on a hotel buffet. For some reason it takes on a newly compelling light. Or it could be my brain goes “whoopee, I’ve paid for this and I’m going to eat my way down the entire buffet”.

Why do you care what others eat?

This, with a slightly adapted ending, could be used for every single AIBU. Just shhhh.

76evie · Today 09:58

Surely the whole point of a holiday is doing what you want, when you want and if that is having conflates for breakfast then so be it!

Facts? I wasn’t aware the Scots and Welsh had superior palates to the English, or that the Scots and Welsh were so attuned to the eating whims of the English. Maybe I should thank Debbie for this new information.

Cornflakes were formulated by Dr. Kellogg to surpress sexual appetite and urges. Perhaps these people at breakfast are doing the other guests a favour by not fapping themselves stupid around the pool/wedding/conference centre.

Thank you for your service cornflake consumers.

Yeah, that's Debbie's whole shtick. Quite entertaining, and tends to get prejudice and bigotry exposed. Hit and miss as you say though.

Maybe you’re only allowed to eat them if you live in a country that doesn’t ‘t sell cornflakes.

I don't think OP is being judgy, the comments are harsh.

When I go on holiday I always eat what the locals etc. so in Asia that's rice dishes for breakfast.

I am also baffled by why people go to experience different cultures and then eat cornflakes. It's a fair enough question, coming from a place of curiosity I guess. Surely asking the question and reading the replies is how we learn to understand other people's perspectives??

I have done the "eat what the locals eat" and its either horrible or trashes my digestion or both. There are also may reasons to go abroad other than to experience different cultures...and in these days of "performance villages" and other activities laid on for tourists, I am not sure how valid that argument is. Don't misunderstand me, in most cases the local people wo operate or work in these activities do very well out of it and often would otherwise struggle to make a living. Not sure why you are baffled? It seems clear enough to me.

So what i have seen worse in the US they eat pancakes and no hot food its all depends which country. European hotels are far better

Hotel buffet breakfasts are my special treat. I still think of the lovely rural boutique hotel in Menorca where I used to take an extra plate of sliced tomatoes to hand feed to the tortoises who roamed the gardens. and how resentful I felt about the missed opportunities in a tour of India when we had to get on the blumming buses rather than grazing the five or six different breakfast cuisines represented in the hotels. A couple of hours was what was needed…….
