AIBU to think live-streamed public executions have no place in a civilised society?

Just when you think you're becoming desensitised to Trump and the constant stream of news coming out of America.. you read something else that makes you think WTF is actually going on?!

According to the BBC, the Pentagon has confirmed that the first public execution in 60 years is set to take place. The plan is for a terrorist to be executed by firing squad, with the execution being live-streamed.

My immediate thought was that ISIS used to film and broadcast executions as a form of propaganda, intimidation and to make a spectacle of killing. Obviously, there are differences between a terrorist organisation and a country carrying out a judicial sentence, but does live-streaming an execution really make it any less barbaric?

We rightly condemn terrorist groups for turning death into a public spectacle, so why would it be acceptable for a government to do something similar?

How can broadcasting their death to the public can be justified in a modern, civilised society.

AIBU to find this disturbing? Is there any legitimate place for public, live-streamed executions in society, or is this a step to far?

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth speaks ahead of US President Donald Trump at Anduril Industries in Sparrows Point, Maryland, on October 6, 2026.

Fort Hood attacker's execution by firing squad will be livestreamed, Pentagon says

Pete Hegseth says the execution will be public, but a legal expert says the "unprecedented" decision is on "uncertain legal terrain".

Greenland is very fragile at the moment.
How he compares the ambush of Venezuela to Iran. There is no comparison. They had inside access to Venezuela. They captured one couple. It gives him the confidence to hit Iran. He thinks they’re similar all waiting on Trump.
Next President of Venezuela according to him.

Hamas also do this. As do many other groups/militias around the world.

Not as many as Israel manage to kill!

95% on here are voting against the barbarism of this US policy. Probably the same sentiment would be felt in the rest of the civilized world. Perhaps Hegseth thinks the displays of Christian Nationalist power will play well with Republican supporters in the mid-term elections. I really hope with Trump's tariffs, the effect of his war on oil prices and rising inflation, the high national debt and interest payments will see a return to "it's the economy, stupid".

I find it worrying that it isn't 100% TBH.

The USA has lost any kind of worldwide credibility IMO.

I would watch a live streamed execution of Jamie Varley. I would have popcorn and snacks

These terrorists want to be killed publicly, they want their pals to see them 'martyred' so I've no idea why the US would play into their warped ideology.

He will want this.

Far better making him live the rest of his miserable life staring at 4 walls of a prison cell getting attacked by fellow mentalists.

Putin, Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu also have no place in a civilised society but are we now living in a civilised world? We are all going backwards.

The other thing is that children will definitely see it. No question. And WTF does that do to their brains?

I remember accidentally watching the televised decapitation of nick berg when I was young, it def scarred me for a while.

Accidentally? I've never seen a decapitation in my life. I would imagine the build up to it would be obvious what the plan was. Surely you switch off when a weapon appears?

It was making the rounds, went viral and I was young and curious. You never heard of morbid curiosity?

So not as accidental as all that then. But scarring, as this proposed streaming is likely to be.

Accidental in that I didn't search it out, it was sent to me, I watched it. Anyway, that was not at all the point of my post but either way, you're deluded if you think your kids won't do the same if this one is also televised.

Someone getting shot will be over quickly. Nothing like decapitation and tbh as you say most will have watched horrific shit anyway so this will be tame in comparison.

Not minimising, it is wrong on every level more so as it will give this terrorist the death he wants but kids will sadly have seen far worse online.

Oh, my DD is 27 and is no more likely to watch this than I am. But I’m certainly vehemently opposed to it being live-streamed and that no truly civilised society would allow it.

I sincerely hope the internet companies find a way to block this if it goes ahead.
