AIBU to think live-streamed public executions have no place in a civilised society?

Just when you think you're becoming desensitised to Trump and the constant stream of news coming out of America.. you read something else that makes you think WTF is actually going on?!

According to the BBC, the Pentagon has confirmed that the first public execution in 60 years is set to take place. The plan is for a terrorist to be executed by firing squad, with the execution being live-streamed.

My immediate thought was that ISIS used to film and broadcast executions as a form of propaganda, intimidation and to make a spectacle of killing. Obviously, there are differences between a terrorist organisation and a country carrying out a judicial sentence, but does live-streaming an execution really make it any less barbaric?

We rightly condemn terrorist groups for turning death into a public spectacle, so why would it be acceptable for a government to do something similar?

How can broadcasting their death to the public can be justified in a modern, civilised society.

AIBU to find this disturbing? Is there any legitimate place for public, live-streamed executions in society, or is this a step to far?

BBC article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmy0r96xygx6o

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth speaks ahead of US President Donald Trump at Anduril Industries in Sparrows Point, Maryland, on October 6, 2026.

Fort Hood attacker's execution by firing squad will be livestreamed, Pentagon says

Pete Hegseth says the execution will be public, but a legal expert says the "unprecedented" decision is on "uncertain legal terrain".

The world is going backwards. We don’t solve barbarism by live streamed violence

The death penalty has no place in civilised society as far as I'm concerned.

I totally agree, but this is the US.

Sarah2891 · 09/10/2026 16:26

YANBU. Anyone who thinks this is a good thing is unhinged.

Do you know what's horrific? Murdering a pregnant woman while she begs for her baby's life. As well as murdering twelve other people. And shooting, in the hopes of killing, another thirty.

My sympathy for their murderer is zero. Is the death penalty something that I feel uncomfortable about, obviously. But given the range of horrible things that happen every hour, the execution of a very, very evil man shouldn't really bother anyone apart from those who have the misfortune of loving him.

I wonder why there are always people who post stuff like this.

Do they actually think that the objections raised by other posters are motivated by sympathy for the murderer?

Or is it that they genuinely can't conceive of the idea that two things can simultaneously be wrong? So if they know that the murder was bad, then they assume that the execution must automatically be good?

storyinside · 09/10/2026 16:34

I suppose history shows us how civilisations rise - until corruption and rot set in before their fall. We're quite possibly witnessing the fall of America and, by extension, Western civilisation as we have known it. If the Trump administration is the ultimate outcime of Western democracy, then what?

Autumngirl5 · 09/10/2026 16:37

I thought I must have misheard and it was going to happen in a Middle Eastern country at first. I was beyond shocked when I heard it was America and can’t believe it will actually happen (please God).
Apart from the obvious barbarity of it, it could insight more violence against Americans.

ruffler45 · 09/10/2026 16:37

I have a feeling the streaming will be cancelled.

They have track record for saying something and waiting for a reaction and then "doing a deal".

JHound · 09/10/2026 16:39

The current US male leadership really give off strong “Handmaid’s Tale” vibes.

Well if Hegseth gets his way then the USA will be in good company alongside Iran and Afghanistan.

This isn’t about the execution. It’s about the proposed live streaming.

CarbootJunction · 09/10/2026 16:42

I'm fairly certain it won't be mandatory to watch it.

I hope there is some tracking being planned for those who do...

WhiteFramesandPlanes · 09/10/2026 16:44

Who will actually show it though? I can't imagine it being on Sky News

I'd bet the farm that Fox News will.

Myli1 · 09/10/2026 16:46

YANBU. It’s absolutely barbaric, no matter what the perpetrator’s circumstances are. No doubt there’ll be a brace of MAGA lunatics shooting their load over this.

Americans who watch it will probably receive a special patriot medal, with Donald Trump's face on one side and an assault rifle on the other.

My theory is that they have sadistic leanings, and the thought of this appeals to them. They can't admit to it, possibly even to themselves, so pretend they're motivated by a higher level of empathy for the victims than people who are disgusted by it. They get to cheer on heinous barbarity while telling themselves they are the more moral. They're all over the Pike threads saying the same.

Minasama · 09/10/2026 16:47

I am shocked. This is what I associate with medieval societies and the Middle East, not the US. Yet more appalling behaviour from the US government.

InterIgnis · 09/10/2026 16:49

It’s wrong, and I don’t believe it is likely to happen, but it’s insanely hyperbolic to say this makes the US no different to Iran or Isis.

This man is being executed because he’s been tried and found guilty of capital murderer. He’s not being executed because he criticized the government online. He’s not a woman being disappeared because he appeared in public without a hijab. He’s not being burned alive in cage because he follows the wrong religion.

I have suspicions that the entire point of this is announcement is the outrage it would cause, which makes me question what attention is being diverted away from.

YABU to believe that the USA is anything approaching a civilised society.

True should have put supposed to be a civilised country.

Of course his crimes are horrific but does that mean live streaming his execution is warranted?

What will it achieve?

As others have pointed out its not about the behaviour of the person being executed, the reason for the execution is irrelevant. Its about live streaming an execution which is something we know some terrorist organisations like to do, and also some very oppressive /barbaric regimes. So in that way we see the US behaving like Iran or Isis.

Well, it’s clearly not a “modern civilised society”.

Believe it could actually be illegal to broadcast it in UK. anyway; I’d not want to see it.

EscCtrl · 09/10/2026 17:06

95% on here are voting against the barbarism of this US policy. Probably the same sentiment would be felt in the rest of the civilized world. Perhaps Hegseth thinks the displays of Christian Nationalist power will play well with Republican supporters in the mid-term elections. I really hope with Trump's tariffs, the effect of his war on oil prices and rising inflation, the high national debt and interest payments will see a return to "it's the economy, stupid".

ICEUS.
Seems like a suitable name for USA.
