AIBU to think live-streamed public executions have no place in a civilised society?

Just when you think you're becoming desensitised to Trump and the constant stream of news coming out of America.. you read something else that makes you think WTF is actually going on?!

According to the BBC, the Pentagon has confirmed that the first public execution in 60 years is set to take place. The plan is for a terrorist to be executed by firing squad, with the execution being live-streamed.

My immediate thought was that ISIS used to film and broadcast executions as a form of propaganda, intimidation and to make a spectacle of killing. Obviously, there are differences between a terrorist organisation and a country carrying out a judicial sentence, but does live-streaming an execution really make it any less barbaric?

We rightly condemn terrorist groups for turning death into a public spectacle, so why would it be acceptable for a government to do something similar?

How can broadcasting their death to the public can be justified in a modern, civilised society.

AIBU to find this disturbing? Is there any legitimate place for public, live-streamed executions in society, or is this a step to far?

BBC article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmy0r96xygx6o

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth speaks ahead of US President Donald Trump at Anduril Industries in Sparrows Point, Maryland, on October 6, 2026.

Fort Hood attacker's execution by firing squad will be livestreamed, Pentagon says

Pete Hegseth says the execution will be public, but a legal expert says the "unprecedented" decision is on "uncertain legal terrain".

It's abhorrent.

As others have pointed out its not about the behaviour of the person being executed, the reason for the execution is irrelevant. Its about live streaming an execution which is something we know some terrorist organisations like to do, and also some very oppressive /barbaric regimes. So in that way we see the US behaving like Iran or Isis.

It isn’t irrelevant at all. It is in fact very relevant to consider if you intend for a comparison to hold up beyond a superficial level. Whether or not they actually do it, or if the courts would even allow it, is also relevant.

Live-streaming it certainly something that shouldn’t be done imo, and hopefully it will not be, but it does not make the U.S the same as Iran in the way some pp are claiming.

They American authorities summarily execute unarmed people, on the streets (and in thier homes) on a weekly, if not daily, basis.

The Ice Agents, and officers, get no punishment.

It’s the Wild West over there.

Do you know what's horrific? Murdering a pregnant woman while she begs for her baby's life. As well as murdering twelve other people. And shooting, in the hopes of killing, another thirty.

My sympathy for their murderer is zero. Is the death penalty something that I feel uncomfortable about, obviously. But given the range of horrible things that happen every hour, the execution of a very, very evil man shouldn't really bother anyone apart from those who have the misfortune of loving him.

Two things can be true at the same time.

What he did was horrific.

But an execution on live TV? And when you say it shouldn't bother anyone, then why does it need to be on TV. Can you imagine anyone paying for this via Netflix or something?

Fast800goingforit · 09/10/2026 17:28

I don't think the death penalty has any place in a civilised society. I can't actually see this live steaming going ahead.

sausagesandtomatoes · 09/10/2026 17:31

I’d place good money on this being another trolling attempt from President Trump. He loves it!

In short, he can say this execution will be live-streamed but it’ll spend decades caught up in legal appeals. The Constitution forbids executions which fall into ‘cruel or unusual punishment’ and exposing a person to what’s effectively global humiliation, would almost definitely fall into that category.

Once again Trump (and now Hegseth) is trolling the world and everyone’s falling for it.

I'm not sure the United States has ever been a civilised society.

I'm fairly certain it won't be mandatory to watch it.

Children will watch it. No question. Sick psychos will too. And religious zealots. And a whole slew of people who shouldn't.

If you want to, seek psychological help.

It does show the true face of the USA to the world, yet again. State sanctioned terrorism isn't any better than ISIS terrorism.

Not only that but Hasan actively WANTS it to be global. His standby attorneys openly stated that Hasan's primary objective was to be sentenced to death. He leaked documents to journalists revealing that he told military mental health workers he believed he could "still be a martyr" if he were executed. Maybe they are giving this to him like a luxury last meal?

The people who would choose to watch it are the exact people who shouldn't be allowed to watch it, basically!

Neither of them are intelligent enough to troll the world. They genuinely believes this is a good idea

Helpmechooseausername · 09/10/2026 17:55

The thing that gets me about this more than all the other horrific aspects is that there are people out there who will actually watch it. Actually WANT to watch it. That's deeply concerning.

When I was at uni back in the 90s I accidentally watched someone get shot in the face and killed (someone thought it would be funny to put it on a screen we were all watching). That image stays with me to this day. I can't comprehend that there are some who will choose to watch it.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 09/10/2026 17:55

PeasOff · 09/10/2026 16:53

Of course his crimes are horrific but does that mean live streaming his execution is warranted?

What will it achieve?

The only thing I can think of is catharsis but the families of victims are usually invited to witness the execution in person anyway.

Has anyone else seen Life and death row on BBC? Really good series following the final ditch appeals and execution from all perspectives. The family members all support the executions, even the ones who were anti DP before.

I know it sounds terrifying, a father was shot in his car by Ice the other day in front of his child.
Its reminding me of 1930s Germany.

Somebody needs to cancel America's Netflix. They've watched too much Black Mirror and have started to think it is a How-To manual.

Asiana · 09/10/2026 18:27

I support death penalty in some cases including this one and find live streaming it utterly abbhorant. What makes it different than what they do in Afghanistan?

Jimmyjumpy · 09/10/2026 18:33

Its absolutely disgusting and uncivilised.

Treetreetreetree · 09/10/2026 18:36

I work in an inner London primary school and so many of our children watched the Charlie Kirk assassination it was heartbreaking. They will end up seeing this and that in itself is deeply disturbing.
Trump and his entourage have damaged America in a way I’m not sure they will ever get over.

itwasyourshowallalong · 09/10/2026 18:56

It’s horrendous, and I am genuinely concerned where it is going to go from here

The question is, though - what can we do? What practical, tangible steps can we take to voice that this is not ok?
