AIBU to think live-streamed public executions have no place in a civilised society?

Just when you think you're becoming desensitised to Trump and the constant stream of news coming out of America.. you read something else that makes you think WTF is actually going on?!

According to the BBC, the Pentagon has confirmed that the first public execution in 60 years is set to take place. The plan is for a terrorist to be executed by firing squad, with the execution being live-streamed.

My immediate thought was that ISIS used to film and broadcast executions as a form of propaganda, intimidation and to make a spectacle of killing. Obviously, there are differences between a terrorist organisation and a country carrying out a judicial sentence, but does live-streaming an execution really make it any less barbaric?

We rightly condemn terrorist groups for turning death into a public spectacle, so why would it be acceptable for a government to do something similar?

How can broadcasting their death to the public can be justified in a modern, civilised society.

AIBU to find this disturbing? Is there any legitimate place for public, live-streamed executions in society, or is this a step to far?

BBC article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmy0r96xygx6o

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth speaks ahead of US President Donald Trump at Anduril Industries in Sparrows Point, Maryland, on October 6, 2026.

Fort Hood attacker's execution by firing squad will be livestreamed, Pentagon says

Pete Hegseth says the execution will be public, but a legal expert says the "unprecedented" decision is on "uncertain legal terrain".

The first and last person to be excecuted by the modern state of Israel was Eichmann.

They kill people (including children) every single day, even during a so called "ceasefire". Torture and sexual assault of prisoners not uncommon, thats not the mark of a civilised society. And they seem to have an insatiable lust for war at the moment..... Together with their best mates the US I find their behaviour disturbing and frightening.

You can see things that way if you like. There hasn't been an execution in Israel (public or otherwise) since Eichmann.

Hamas also do this. As do many other groups/militias around the world.

There's a risk this gives the guy what he wants - martyrdom very publicly.

I'd suggest moving this discussion to the ME board.

Peter is a Christian too. Why not go full Shariah at this point?
We're entering a Black Mirror episode that's probably going to take a long time to come out of.
I had hoped that Christianity might be a friend but I forgot that people can interpret religion differently and that human petty vindictiveness comes in form of Christian, Jew, Muslim, black, brown, white, man, woman etc.
I swear social media is cursed. It's a parasite worming into people driving a lot of dysfunction and blood thirsts. The next witch hunts will come from it. Since observing people on social media I'm convinced you could propagandise people to go along with basically anything. I have learnt to view twitter as a vast room of mental patients wandering about in semi darkness carrying enormous, swollen lumps upon their head with humiliation, envy, resentment, fear, injured injured pride inside insulting each other and gathering online lynch mobs that spill out into reality. ... The live streaming is a very bad sign... and I'm not against death penalty ... but it is a very bad turn

Edit: I'm not against the execution to clarify.

Exactly.
It'll be a dream come true for him going out in a blaze of glory. Far better to keep him locked up for the rest of his life.

Just wondering when the American electorate will wake up and see the lunatics that their leaders are ! Sadly I doubt it will be soon.

Do you know what's horrific? Murdering a pregnant woman while she begs for her baby's life. As well as murdering twelve other people. And shooting, in the hopes of killing, another thirty.

My sympathy for their murderer is zero. Is the death penalty something that I feel uncomfortable about, obviously. But given the range of horrible things that happen every hour, the execution of a very, very evil man shouldn't really bother anyone apart from those who have the misfortune of loving him.

Way to miss the whole fucking point.

Yeah he is bad. No one is saying he’s not. No one is saying they sympathise with him.

This is about whether a country goes back to blood thirsty medieval barbaric ways of treating those who kill, by becoming killers themselves and showing that off to the world on the telly.

It's old testament stuff on both sides and Christian zionism has given it a nudge. Didn't the British create Wahhabism too?
Antisemites online keeping blaming Jews for what's going on but so much of today's problems stem from Christian zionists and Quakers (mass migration). I really don't know where to find hope anymore. Thinking Buddhism or something. Clearly they've chosen this guy because he's Palestinian. Again in not against him being executed I really don't care about mass murderers being killed I just think its all twisted and gratuitous.

Yeah, it's weird af

Then again.. I think we should have to view abattoirs and personally kill animals to qualify to eat them so.. maybe we go back to watching executions and the people in the USA will vote to get rid of them?? I dunno.

Facilitated the spread of Wahhabism, did not create it. Still, v. Dark.

The livestreaming is quite disturbing.

It will be relished worldwide, replayed and turned into memes.

The justice in it will become contaminated by vindictiveness and lose a perfection proper to it.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks it's ominous. Appetite for cruelty is most dangerous when it acquires a righteous conscience.

I have a feeling the streaming will be cancelled.

They have track record for saying something and waiting for a reaction and then "doing a deal".

Yes I was thinking this. You get the feeling DT enjoys pushing boundaries for the craic. And is he showboating to let his adversaries know what he’s capable of. But then he doesn’t go ahead.

It’s appalling and inhuman, but typical of Trump. And it distracts the knitting populace from his fuck ups over Iran.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 09/10/2026 23:23

This is a distraction. I don’t believe many politicians are truthful about a lot. America takes it to a whole new level. The butler shooting that Trump shut down the investigation. His magical ear. They denied bombing the school in Iran, they lied about nuclear weapons. Trump has made a fortune from his Presidency. Him and his investors.
Now with the earth quake hitting South America impacting fuel. Iran too and Ukraine hitting Russian refineries, it is going to get a lot worse.
I didn’t like Trump to begin with I didn’t think for a moment that he’d create havoc and bring back live firing line executions.

And Iran was a distraction from Epstein.

I hope I live to see behind the curtain of all of this.

I remember threads about people being killed by XL bully dogs, and teens being killed and caught on CCTV.
Family of the people in the videos begging people not to watch and share.
And people posting on here saying how awful the crime was because they had watched the videos... they will be the same folks that watch the live stream.
They walk among us.

It truly is a cesspit.
The bank of America settled for $72.5 million with the victims who accused the bank of aiding money laundering through sex trafficking yet silence from the authorities. It puts the pizza gate conspiracy theory in a whole new light.

SpiderInMyShoe · Yesterday 01:53

Since this is supposed to be a military punishment and deterrence for a crime that occurred while in the military, I don’t even see that even needs to be live-streamed to the general public anyway. This is ill-conceived by Hegseth.
