AIBU to think live-streamed public executions have no place in a civilised society?

Just when you think you're becoming desensitised to Trump and the constant stream of news coming out of America.. you read something else that makes you think WTF is actually going on?!

According to the BBC, the Pentagon has confirmed that the first public execution in 60 years is set to take place. The plan is for a terrorist to be executed by firing squad, with the execution being live-streamed.

My immediate thought was that ISIS used to film and broadcast executions as a form of propaganda, intimidation and to make a spectacle of killing. Obviously, there are differences between a terrorist organisation and a country carrying out a judicial sentence, but does live-streaming an execution really make it any less barbaric?

We rightly condemn terrorist groups for turning death into a public spectacle, so why would it be acceptable for a government to do something similar?

How can broadcasting their death to the public can be justified in a modern, civilised society.

AIBU to find this disturbing? Is there any legitimate place for public, live-streamed executions in society, or is this a step to far?

BBC article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmy0r96xygx6o

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth speaks ahead of US President Donald Trump at Anduril Industries in Sparrows Point, Maryland, on October 6, 2026.

Fort Hood attacker's execution by firing squad will be livestreamed, Pentagon says

Pete Hegseth says the execution will be public, but a legal expert says the "unprecedented" decision is on "uncertain legal terrain".

As the bread got scarcer, less affordable and of poorer quality, the circuses became of necessity more extreme, in order to divert the populace.

The only thing I can think of is catharsis but the families of victims are usually invited to witness the execution in person anyway.

Has anyone else seen Life and death row on BBC? Really good series following the final ditch appeals and execution from all perspectives. The family members all support the executions, even the ones who were anti DP before.

Which is a reason the DP is wrong. If people are not in favour unless it is their loved one who died, it's not justice, it's vengence. And families can and do want vengence. That doesn't mean a justice system should be based on it.

My personal prefence is a justice system based on public safety, prevention and if those are centred, rehabilitation. Obviously a mass murderer cannot be rehabilitated so life in prison.

And a justice system being used for voyeuristic, bloodthirsty, religious nuttery is a classic Pete Hegseth issue. The man is a dangerous weirdo.

If it's going to be on TV they might as well go the whole hog and have sponsors
"this bullet brought to you by Bud Light, America's favourite beer", cheerleaders, a half-time show, a flyover with fighter jets, gambling and everything else.

No doubt some of his supporters will sponsor in the hope that when they get to take his place the world will see their martyrdom too. Probably via crapto, cos who really needs to look too closely at who is funding this "entertainment".
It's all bungs for the war machine.

That's an incredibly Islamophobic and antisemitic idea. Says an awful lot about you.

I've reported as hate speech.

Agreed.
Having heard the relish with which Hegseth described what would happen, America is in a lot more peril than I had realised.

Do you know what's horrific? Murdering a pregnant woman while she begs for her baby's life. As well as murdering twelve other people. And shooting, in the hopes of killing, another thirty.

My sympathy for their murderer is zero. Is the death penalty something that I feel uncomfortable about, obviously. But given the range of horrible things that happen every hour, the execution of a very, very evil man shouldn't really bother anyone apart from those who have the misfortune of loving him.

So you’re happy that children will watch this are you?? Fuck me, there’s no limit to stupid 😩

Your comment is disgusting. Deliberately using pork to humiliate Muslims or Jewish people by attacking their religious beliefs isn't justice, it's vindictive and is religious provocation.

Also, why assume it would be a deterrent? It could just as easily fuel hatred and become propaganda for further radicalisation. Making an execution more degrading doesn't make it more effective. It just makes it more barbaric.

Read up on the case. And, please, specify, what it says about me.
And, please, explain, how 'allowing' people like that becoming 'martyrs', helps prevent similar cases.

Futurehappiness · 09/10/2026 19:36

There is something seriously wrong in America. It is as though they have one foot in 21st century civilisation, but the other foot is - where? In ancient times when people were crucified? In the time of the Middle Ages/Henry V111/French Revolution? Any time where people were executed in public who were invited to watch, gloat and jeer. Does this country want to be a modern civilised country or not?

Don’t be silly. No one is saying this evil man should or shouldn’t bother anyone. That isn’t what is being discussed. The topic being debated is should his execution be live streamed. 2 very different things.

He can rot in hell, but why would any so called civilised country want to live stream his execution?

I would chuck Israel into that group too unfortunately after what we all know has gone on in Gaza, and what happens in Israeli prisons. Who would have thought this sort of shit was going to be happening in 2026 😢 Humanity is going backwards sigh..

The first and last person to be excecuted by the modern state of Israel was Eichmann.

Executions have no place in civilised society so it’s not surprising they want to
livestream it. they’ve already crossed the line into barbarism.

Just to see the other side, Maga loves it.
The commenters on Fox News think this is a brilliant idea.
I feel too many Americans are rather fanatical.

It's not the killing of him that's the problem here - it's the live streaming, so that people can revel in watching him die.

That’s a load of bollocks and you’re assuming all Muslims/Jewish people think the same way and that religious desecration would automatically deter extremists.

It could just as easily reinforce their beliefs, create martyrs and fuel further radicalisation. Your assumption isn’t evidence that it would work it's just small minded and gross.

LastTrainsEast · 09/10/2026 20:16

One argument is that the execution is the will of the people and that if you don't have the stomach to watch it you shouldn't have voted for it. The voters expect someone to have the job of doing it and they have to see it close up.

You should be horrified. It should make you think deeply about your position on capital punishment. It's a very serious matter.

And all punishment is barbaric on one level. Locking someone away for decades is pretty awful,

Sometimes a society must inflict suffering as a means of self defence and stipulates that it NOT be decided or carried out by the victim or any interested parry, but by neutral members of that society.

It's not perfect, but it's the best we can do.

Terrorists murdering people IS different. Then it's not according to any due process of law and frequently carried out by people who see it as a perk. You don't have the option of behaving decently and thus avoiding the penalty.

Getting a rough idea of what your deeply unpleasant, Islamophobic and Antisemitic suggestion was, it wouldn't work. Not only do both religions recognise that something done to a believer isn't something that can be held against them and they are therefore blameless in it, both also state clearly that that it is also absolutely permissible to eat pork/treyf/haram foods when starving in order to preserve life.

LastTrainsEast · 09/10/2026 20:25

For myself I approve of capital punishment in principle, but the law is bought so easily and cheaply it's hard to ensure you execute the right one.

The method is the US bothers me. You can put a dog down reliably and painlessly, but a person can take many attempts and must involve pain and terror.

You're not supposed to be enacting revenge, but removing a danger to others permanently. It should be painless and fast or it reduces us to the level of the criminal.
