Hoods = useless

Hoods on a jacket or coat

Useless

So, they either blow off and then your head gets wet

Or you manage to pull the strings (if you're lucky enough to have a stringy hood) and it fits your head but then moves your glasses around with every step

I also like the way a big solid hood makes crossing the road dangerous, turn your head to the right, your hood stays still so you are now looking into the hood instead of into the road. And vice versa of course, this isnt a left wing/right wing biased hood. Its dangerous in both directions. This is what my dry robe does.

Just done an hours walk with a rain jacket. Hood blowing off. Tighten strings on hood, hood now moving my glasses around. Plus actually making me hunch over due to it pulling on the top of my head. Loosen strings, hood blows off

Earlier today I was wearing a different rain jacket. No strings on that hood. Hood blew off.

Useless, the whole lot of them.

Yabvu, you can pry my hood from my cold, dead hands.

I have a great raincoat, think it’s from Next. The hood is massive, never blows off, and fully shelters my face.

I have to slightly pull it back to cross the road but that doesn’t matter.

A hat with a wide brim is vastly better for keeping the rain off your glasses. Try something like a Tilley. I have several. If you go for a cheaper option, make sure it is waterproof or water-resistant, has a wide, slightly stiff brim, and a chin strap for very windy days. I like the crown to be high enough that I can twist my hair up inside it. I also tuck the chin strap up inside the crown if it's not very windy.

Another way is to wear a baseball cap under the hood. The peak of the cap stops the hood string from messing with your glasses and makes the hood turn with your head. It also keeps the rain off your glasses, though not as well as a brim does. Again, make sure it's waterproof/resistant.

Get a parka. The hood is big and heavy so doesn't blow off. And it has fur

seahorsessky · 07/10/2026 22:26

Friend who wears glasses agrees with you, but I like hoods. Obviously I might well change my mind if I need to wear them with glasses!

concertinacornflake · 07/10/2026 22:27

I like hoods, very cosy. And you can hide.

Ineffable23 · 07/10/2026 22:29

I mainly wear a waterproof brimmed hat for wet weather wear, but I do have a raincoat with hood which has a big peak with an adjustable metal wire inside the edge of the peak. It's the world's ugliest jacket but it's also incredibly water, completely waterproof and has a great hood, even though I wear glasses.

ShakyBake · 07/10/2026 22:36

Completely agree, attached they are rubbish. I actually have a life changing story because of a hood.

Couple of years ago I bought an oversized Stetson hat, I loved wearing it and felt like I was in a Western as always had a fondness of anything cowboy related. This led on to joining a line dancing group and next year I'm off to the semi finals in Texas. All because I was fed up of wearing a hood.

longtompot · 07/10/2026 22:41

I found hoods useless until I was told to wear a baseball cap underneath. Now my hood doesn't blow off and I no longer have rain pouring down my face and face cream going into my eyes and stinging them and blinding me

BogRollBOGOF · 07/10/2026 22:43

I can't hear properlywhen wearing a hood (plus wet roads amplify traffic noise).

Hats are much more practical.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 07/10/2026 22:46

Agreed. Completely. This might be the most correct thread on Mumsnet. I have accepted the wet head.

I am however a man, with no hairstyle and a set of eyebrows built for the Welsh weather. I can see how a lack of those would be problematic.

SleeplessRoads · 07/10/2026 22:49

I wear a baseball cap in all weathers, but particularly in rain with a hood.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/10/2026 22:51

Umbrellas are the homicidal work of Satan.🤷‍♀️

Take responsibility for your own dryness, get a good coat with a good hood.

PremierInnShafter · 07/10/2026 22:52

An alternative?

Hoods = useless
canklesmctacotits · 07/10/2026 23:04

This is why Nora Batty wore a plastic headscarf.

Yes but they’re big and cover your eyes.

I wear glasses and I’ve never had this problem !

Thecatspantaloons · 07/10/2026 23:09

I agree with the danger of not being able to look around, especially while riding my bike, but I love my hoods and won't buy a coat or jacket without one.

I believe you are either a hat person or a glasses person - I suit hats and I would kill in a Stetson I feel 🤠.

RandomMess · 07/10/2026 23:15

I have to agree but also have a life changing story!

Was about to go for a dog walk in drizzle, had but said dog in car. Due to the hood issues mentioned - poor visibility and hearing when up I went back to the house to get a hat instead. Had a stroke! Had I not gone back for the hat I would have been driving when I had and likely crashed the car.

I have a bobble hat to wear that keeps my hood up in particularly cold or windy weather, highly recommend.

I also recommend a dog that refuses to go for a walk if it’s more than drizzle 👌

TheeNotoriousPIG · 07/10/2026 23:22

May I introduce you to Rain Mate bonnets? I wondered where they had all gone, as they were a common sight on the heads of older ladies in the village where I grew up. Admittedly, my mother stopped dead in the street and said that she would disown me if ever I wore one, but they seem so PRACTICAL!

Alternatively, I recently saw someone in a sou'wester hat and coat. I was very surprised, thinking that they had been relegated to Enid Blyton books.

I have a few waterproof hats for such occasions. I also like Ridgeline coats, where you can angle the brim to keep the rain off you a bit better, and if you pull the cords tight enough, there is no chance of it coming down!

MrsShawnHatosy · 07/10/2026 23:25

I’ve got a coat with a peaked hood that has strings. Works perfectly.

Rejoinedforthis · 07/10/2026 23:30

I am tall with a larger than average head 😂 so hoods have always been utterly futile for me until….following recommendations on here I bought a Protected Species raincoat and MY GOD the hood actually goes over my head and keeps me dry. I wore it for the first time in the absolute pissing rain today and I got to work with dry hair. Game changer.

kilika · 08/10/2026 00:04

I haaaaaaaaate hoods. They blow off. They're too deep so you can't see a bloody thing or the drawstrings pull them over your eyes.

Brolly and/or hat.

Ninetwenty · 08/10/2026 00:08

This is where a proper coat, rather than a fashion coat makes all the difference. The good outdoor brands have a hood that fits, often with a peak that will keep rain off your glasses, and that you can move in.

It's as important to try the hood on as it is the rest of the coat.
