Hoods = useless

Hoods on a jacket or coat

Useless

So, they either blow off and then your head gets wet

Or you manage to pull the strings (if you're lucky enough to have a stringy hood) and it fits your head but then moves your glasses around with every step

I also like the way a big solid hood makes crossing the road dangerous, turn your head to the right, your hood stays still so you are now looking into the hood instead of into the road. And vice versa of course, this isnt a left wing/right wing biased hood. Its dangerous in both directions. This is what my dry robe does.

Just done an hours walk with a rain jacket. Hood blowing off. Tighten strings on hood, hood now moving my glasses around. Plus actually making me hunch over due to it pulling on the top of my head. Loosen strings, hood blows off

Earlier today I was wearing a different rain jacket. No strings on that hood. Hood blew off.

Useless, the whole lot of them.

This is where a proper coat, rather than a fashion coat makes all the difference. The good outdoor brands have a hood that fits, often with a peak that will keep rain off your glasses, and that you can move in.

It's as important to try the hood on as it is the rest of the coat.

This, mine is a Regatta I bought in a sale and it’s great - has a drawstring hood with a peak.

PlasticFiend · 08/10/2026 00:21

So just hold onto your hood with your hand in bad weather? I do this to stop my glasses getting covered in raindrops, so I can actually see to cross a road. It hurts when it’s really cold because I have Reynauds but not much else to do.

SnowFrogJelly · 08/10/2026 00:39

My hood doesn’t move my glasses around…

Isittimeformynapyet · 08/10/2026 02:22

Why on earth are you people going out in the rain!?

(In anticipation of a slew of earnest replies, I should point out that this was not a serious question)

I like hoods, very cosy. And you can hide.

THIS……especially the hiding haha

A hat with a wide brim is vastly better for keeping the rain off your glasses. Try something like a Tilley. I have several. If you go for a cheaper option, make sure it is waterproof or water-resistant, has a wide, slightly stiff brim, and a chin strap for very windy days. I like the crown to be high enough that I can twist my hair up inside it. I also tuck the chin strap up inside the crown if it's not very windy.

Another way is to wear a baseball cap under the hood. The peak of the cap stops the hood string from messing with your glasses and makes the hood turn with your head. It also keeps the rain off your glasses, though not as well as a brim does. Again, make sure it's waterproof/resistant.

Also a fan of the hood & cap combo. I don’t wear specs but it solves the problems of the hood blowing off and not moving when looking left and right.

LivelyAquaPoster · 08/10/2026 05:36

I have a thing for jackets and 99% of them have hoods, I love them.

I agree that some are misdesigned (well-designed hoods will turn with the head and not block vision nor blow off). But usually when it's cold enough to wear a jacket, the weather requires a hood, especially a rain jacket. Plus it's so cozy!

This. I used these criteria when seeking a new raincoat and I test out all hoods methodically. Many a coat has failed the test.
You need multi-directional adjustability and a peak.
Didriksons and Jack Wolfskin tend to suit me. I had a very disappointing realisation about a Regatta 'waterproof' in the middle of a rain storm in Cambridge a few years back. Never again 🤣

Umbrellas are the homicidal work of Satan.🤷‍♀️

Take responsibility for your own dryness, get a good coat with a good hood.

I use both. Umbrellas are so underrated. Highly practical to do things under (use phone, eat/drink, put on hat/gloves, keep anything in my hands and face dry, access backpack, cover backpack...).

pkt3chgirl · 08/10/2026 05:48

On Mumsnet about 8 years ago I got a code for 50% off a Protected Species commuter jacket. It has a hood that has strings on the sides, one on the top so it’s not baggy and a little peak to keep the rain from dripping down my face.

I walk 45 minutes from my local station home and that jacket and hood has kept my body dry in an absolute downpour. My waterproof rucksack leaked at the zip soaking most of the contents and my lower legs were soaked as well. But not my head or upper body.

I love that coat as hood so much I stopped carrying an umbrella.

Maybe Granny knew a thing or two after all - she had one of these in her bag at all times!

Hoods = useless

Baseball hat under lightly tightened hood.

XmasCrackPies · 08/10/2026 06:28

How are you all pulling off a baseball cap and coat combination? What sort of coat and cap? I would look like a mental patient. Or a road man.

Completely agree, attached they are rubbish. I actually have a life changing story because of a hood.

Couple of years ago I bought an oversized Stetson hat, I loved wearing it and felt like I was in a Western as always had a fondness of anything cowboy related. This led on to joining a line dancing group and next year I'm off to the semi finals in Texas. All because I was fed up of wearing a hood.

Edited

Brilliant!!!

Oh you are absolutely right about umbrellas. They should be banned.

Why?

littlefatdonkey · 08/10/2026 06:49

The only coat I have that has a not-useless hood is from TikTok shop! The hood is huge, and comes quite far out over the head. The sad thing is it’s a only a rain coat, so if I need warmth I usually have to put a hoodie on underneath (I can have the hood of the hoodie up and the hood of the jacket up and neither of them blow down).

If you’re planning on getting tipsy, take a shot every time I’ve used the word ‘hood’ 😅

Ineffable23 · 08/10/2026 07:06

My answer with umbrellas is that you need the long ones, as they're much more robust, so can actually cope with at least a moderate amount of wind.

You might like to think so but my OH insists on some long gentlemens brolly and last night he came out the station and I met him at the bus stop (in my hood) and the bloody thing blew inside out and nearly dragged him into the road

And I have new danger to report from this morning, it wasnt raining but I felt I needed the hood up to protect my ears from the wind and I didnt see a low hanging branch and nearly knocked myself out

Danger.

elperil · 08/10/2026 19:24

I only wear coats/jackets with a hood in Autumn/Winter. Brollies are the work of the devil, I mean where do you put them when they are soaking wet, and how many times do they blow inside out (no I'm not paying £100 for a windproof one).

So, I go for hoods with a peak, they are from Trespass, Mountain Warehouse and the like. For the nicer (dressier, i.e. not hiking looking) jackets with "slippy" hoods, I go to the trouble of sewing a small patch of velcro into both sides of the hood near the neck area. Belt and braces, tie the cord, attach the velcro, either or, or both!

I love hoods.

SeriousTissues · 08/10/2026 19:42

I like hoods but I do find them all too big for my head! Also, I’m really struggling to find a long raincoat with a hood that isn’t lined in nasty fabric!

UnaOfStormhold · 08/10/2026 19:48

I used to hate hoods and even bought a waterproof fleece lined cap with ear flaps which is as wonderful for weatherproofing as it is dire for fashion. But my current coat has a brim and drawstrings in the right places and works fantastically even over glasses.

I have a Seasalt coat and a cheap, in the sale, H&M baseball cap. I would like to get a better hat but as I wasn't a hat wearer when I bought it, I thought £4 was a safe bet if I didn't wear it again

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 08/10/2026 22:44

I hate having a hood up, it makes me feel like a horse with blinkers on! But I’m terrible with umbrellas - just forever losing them. Maybe a Nora Batty plastic headscarf is the only way forward….

VoltaireMittyDream · 08/10/2026 22:47

I have a tiny head, and hoods are always big and loose and floppy, even the stringy ones.

But they are helpful for keeping it from raining down your neck.
