Hoods = useless

Hoods on a jacket or coat

Useless

So, they either blow off and then your head gets wet

Or you manage to pull the strings (if you're lucky enough to have a stringy hood) and it fits your head but then moves your glasses around with every step

I also like the way a big solid hood makes crossing the road dangerous, turn your head to the right, your hood stays still so you are now looking into the hood instead of into the road. And vice versa of course, this isnt a left wing/right wing biased hood. Its dangerous in both directions. This is what my dry robe does.

Just done an hours walk with a rain jacket. Hood blowing off. Tighten strings on hood, hood now moving my glasses around. Plus actually making me hunch over due to it pulling on the top of my head. Loosen strings, hood blows off

Earlier today I was wearing a different rain jacket. No strings on that hood. Hood blew off.

Useless, the whole lot of them.

My DryRobe has an excellent hood which stays perfectly in place so YABU.

@TooBigForMyBoots
I could not agree more. I cannot stand umbrellas, whether it is me using one or someone else.
(I'm not the biggest fan of hoods either to be honest but they are by far the lesser of two evils!)

I’m with you, I absolutely fucking hate hoods. My main issue seems to be my walloping great head though, hoods are never big enough, so my face and the front section of my hair stay uncovered, what is the point in that?!

helpfulperson · 09/10/2026 07:41

Another vote for brimmed hats. I love mine.

Sartre · 09/10/2026 07:44

Agreed and the front of my hair always sticks out of them anyway. I have to rely on an umbrella and hope for the best in Manchester as well… I wear a trench or wool coat because it’s smarter for work.

Fellow glasses wearer here. I seem to end up with an aching neck whenever I have a hood up. Yes, they also fall over half of my face so I can’t see where I’m going or they rub against my hair and cause static electricity with their polyester Borg linings. I don’t like being buttoned up to the chin with “storm flaps” or whatever the funnel neck of the coat is called, either to stop rain going in through the top. The drawstrings tangle in with my hair. Umbrellas are useless where I live and most often blow inside out at the first gust. I wear a Breton cap under the hood because baseball style caps look silly on me, or a Tilley (the only hat you’ll ever need!).

momager22 · 09/10/2026 08:25

I now always wear a baseball cap under a hood. It’s life changing for me !

Catsandcwtches · 09/10/2026 08:27

I wear hoods because where I live the pavements are narrow and there is no room for umbrellas. I would be constantly putting the umbrella down to let people past!

Also, a hood can’t get turned inside out in the British winter winds and it can’t be put down on a seat and forgotten.

TaterTots68 · 10/10/2026 08:42

I hear you OP. Also hoods that aren't big enough so the front of my hair always gets wet. Or so vast they cover my eyes. I hate umbrellas and find hats problematic (I've got very short hair and they give the impression I'm bald or a man!). I also hate it when some hoods made a scratching noise against my hair. But...still better than having to carry an umbrella. Whilst we're on the subject - why don't glasses have windscreen wipers and demisters? 🤷😂
