They are coming here legally.
an asylum claim means they are here legally.
if you are in a situation in your home country because your life is in danger- let’s use my earlier example of an Afghani interpreter for the British army, now on “a list” with the afghani government and watching his colleagues “disappear”.
it takes fucking years to apply for residency in the uk. Lots of paperwork, minimum income or sponsorship etc. plus the minute you submit visa paperwork it flags to your government and chance are you’ll disappear before you reach the airport.
it is “safer”, relatively speaking, to just get yourself out any way you can, risk rape, dangerous journeys, traffickers to get to the uk and lodge and asylum claim. This is just as legal as remaining in Afghanistan and applying for your visa. And less likely to get yourself executed.
there’s one of those “999” episodes somewhere I suggest you watch. The police find an Iraqi (I think) man and his family with CO poisoning in the back of a lorry. His dad was a ranking politician in the previous regime, most of his colleagues and their families were taken one by one. He made the decision to leave before he was next.
genuine asylum seekers don’t just leave because they feel like a change or think they will have an easy life. Their lives are under threat.
and again, and asylum claim is “legal” immigration.
