Christa Pikes is awake and ‘talking’

She’s out of the coma and talking to her lawyers. Aibu to think the state of Tennessee can’t possibly try to do the lethal injection again ? Surely not? People on Reddit are suggesting she might need an amputation of one of her arms because of how caustic pentobarbital is.

I really feel for her victim’s mother. Colleen deserves to be remembered but I don’t personally agree that she (Christa) should go back on death row, I think life without possibility of parole would be a fair choice.

Sounds like a case of 'Rasputin'.
He was hard to execute as well. 💯

Remember that her victim, Colleen Slemmer was tortured by being beaten, slashed, and was then carved into her chest before Pike killed her by crushing her skull.
Slemmer's family were devastated.

The whole situation is unconscionable. And Trump mandating a firing squad to execute the Fort Hood killer just confirms my belief that the death penalty is barbaric and anachronistic.

I completely agree with you! Colleen was tortured by her and she deserves to die in prison but she deserves to die an old lady having 23 hours a day to think on her sins not be tortured by the state. I mean she won’t be put to death this year as they’ve stopped the executions for the year to figure out what went wrong.

horrible

I'm against the Death Penalty anyway, for various reasons. But I don't see the logic in them changing their minds, as in, if you believe she deserved it in the first place, then why not now? Just as if someone put in prison for life is attacked, while you might blame the authorities for allowing that, you presumably wouldn't want the person not to have to serve out the rest of their sentence.
Unless what has happened to her made you change your mind and you are now against the DP, obviously.

You can’t keep injecting people with fatal substances until you get it right and they actually die, surely?

It's wrong to torture people to death. Even murderers. If you're going to kill them, it should be fast.

crikeymikey123 · 06/10/2026 22:52

She's suffered enough.

dustabsorber · 06/10/2026 22:52

I am surprised that since they are such god-fearing folks down there that they just don't accept that it is divine intervention and commute her sentence.

VanillaImpulse · 06/10/2026 22:55

You think they would’ve just injected her with something else to finish her off, an overdose of morphine or insulin

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 06/10/2026 22:55

I know they said on R4 they would indeed be trying again. Personally I feel if they already tried twice and failed they don't get to kill her a third time. If they had a shot and missed that is on them, should be a clean slate now. She is likely to have lasting damage and live in pain as it is.

ilovesooty · 06/10/2026 22:58

I'm against the death penalty anyway.

However she's now going to have life changing injuries due to the incompetence of the process. Enough is enough.

Seriestwo · 06/10/2026 23:02

She’s going to lose an arm?

its barabaric. Everything about this case - from pikes childhood to the murder, trial and this botched execution is horrific.

So did Colleen and her Mum still continues to suffer.

knitnerd90 · 06/10/2026 23:17

The death penalty needs to be abolished. They've executed innocent people. The execution was botched because pharmaceutical companies won't sell the drugs they used to use so now they're using riskier ones, and often doctors won't participate so sometimes they're not even done by doctors any more. It's inhumane. It's hardly like life imprisonment isn't punishment.

Colleen lost her life and her mother lost her child. I’m afraid I have little sympathy

knitnerd90 · 06/10/2026 23:19

Executing Christa pike won't end Colleen's mother's suffering. Her daughter will still be dead. The death penalty is vengeance, not justice.

I don’t think they can

The pharmaceutical companies aren’t allowed to provide anything for this purpose are they? So that’s why they end up using weird shit that doesn’t work.

Doctors aren’t allowed to give a lethal injection so it’s given by people who are not experts anyway.

And if I understood it correctly, due to the condition of her veins, the drugs don’t work the way they should.

The whole thing has made me puzzle over why they do it like this tbh.

But if you know you’ll never get justice, you might want vengeance if that’s all you can get.

LivelyGreyShark · 06/10/2026 23:25

There are people in US jails who have done similar but who don't face the death sentence so it doesn't make sense to me. But from what I've seen in every US post i've read about this the death penalty for Christa is still very much supported.

ScholesPanda · 06/10/2026 23:32

I don't agree with the death penalty in general but as she is in a jurisdiction that has it I'm struggling to see why she deserves a special exemption just because it didn't work first time around.

I read she was abused and thought she must have killed her abuser and was ready to be very sympathetic. When I read what she'd actually done a lot of that sympathy left me I'm afraid.

Newname26 · 06/10/2026 23:39

When you think her boyfriend is out on parole because he was under 18 and she was over 18.
Then consider she was abused since she was a baby, raped age 2

I think she's suffered enough.
Nothing is going to bring her victim back.

The people who witnessed her failed execution must be suffering some sort of post traumatic stress too, especially since they were warned by her lawyers she could suffer unduly.

Its time for a rethink.

He's still in prison. Parole was denied and he isn't eligible for considerable again until 2031

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 06/10/2026 23:49

She was 18, with a history of severe trauma. Had she been sentenced here, she’d almost certainly be out by now.

Instead she’s been on death row, and now been poisoned. I think she’s been punished enough.

Well who ever did that to her should be oh I actually better not say what should be done to them!
