He’s dead? No loss there then. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Who is minimising crime? He was convicted and served a prison sentence.
There are many who have done worse and are walking freely on the streets

Absolutely- many of whom will be walking the streets tomorrow shitting all over the memory of the rape and slaughter of Jews.

This!
This is WAY more important than his inspiring speeches or his qualities as an author.

And yet, here we are.
Women are our own worst enemies.

🙄

He had an amazing art collection and very good taste. There was a tv programme with him talking about art investments and showing some of what he had bought. The art was in this property overlooking the Thames which was the perfect backdrop to the paintings.

He really was an interesting man who had a passion for life. I jealously admired his art collection - if I was a millionaire, I would spend my money on art just like he did. Felt sorry for his wife though, she must have been embarrassed and angry with him for some of his misdemeanours.

Great isn't it?

I don't think they stop you reading someone's books when they die, just so you know.

Why do you like him so much when he's evidently such a piece of shit?

You were by calling them “misdemeanours”.

I hope Monica Coghlan is resting in peace - poor woman didn't live to see herself proven truthful in the witness box

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 06/10/2026 08:40

So many people on here love their black and white thinking. People must be good or bad, no shades for grey, no room to appreciate the good things a person may have done alongside the bad.

So tedious.

Jeffrey Archer, the convicted perjurer? Oh.

And fraudster/liar etc.

disgracefullyyours · 06/10/2026 08:49

It is laughable and daft people here say you can’t separate the man from his art. Well, maybe YOU can’t, but I easily can. I won’t be stopping listening to music by David Bowie anytime soon, will any of you?

And just as laughable was him being sent to prison when community service would have been sufficient punishment for his crime.

IsawwhatIsaw · 06/10/2026 08:51

His books entertained people but the lying and fundamental dishonesty can’t be ignored.
I remember the Court case, the judge describing Mary Archer as fragrant, condemning Monica Coughlan. Awful behaviour all round.

Silverbirchleaf · 06/10/2026 08:54

Love his books, ‘Shall we tell the president?’ Was my first one I read as a teen.

It seems he died suddenly and unexpectedly as he was due to do a talk at the Cheltenham festival soon.

Pedallleur · 06/10/2026 08:55

SpottyAlpaca · 05/10/2026 23:03

I still remember laughing & cheering when Archer was sent to prison for four years. He was a liar, a con man & a convicted perjurer who cheated on his wife, shagged prostitutes & sued journalists who told the truth about him.

Top Lad. 🙄

Luckily he was in the Conservatives who loved all that. Dear Jeffrey with his Krug/shepherds pie suppers. Never mind about his dodgy past/lies/prostitutes. His son was involved in some financial antics in the City. Apple didn't fall far.

Yes, fuck sentencing guidelines. Obviously you know far better than a judge. As for art - he wrote entertaining pot boilers, calling them art is risible.

Not lying about his past? He claimed to have been at Oxford and there was a picture of him as a Police Constable which he forgot about.

GrandHighPoohbah · 06/10/2026 08:59

The guy was a grifter to the end, got to give him that. I doubt anyone would get away with being accepted back in the way he was these days.

He has died. Have some respect please

I never understand this trope. Being dead doesn’t suddenly give someone moral
immunity. Why should someone's death make their actions less open to scrutiny?

Anyway, I know little about Jeffrey Archer, but the obituary in the guardian mentions in its first line than his political career ended in disgrace when he was imprisoned for perjury.

Acknowledging or discussing documented facts about someone’s life isn’t disrespectful - it’s an honest account. We don’t pretend the inconvenient parts of someone’s life never happened just because they’re dead.

Of course his books were art. Just because you have a rather snotty opinion of them doesn’t mean they weren’t art. A dictionary would help you here - it takes no more than five seconds these days to search and read that way.

Pedallleur · 06/10/2026 09:12

Dollymylove · 06/10/2026 06:48

He served his punishment for his misdemeanors

Misdemeanors? He perjured himself. Just doing that earns a jail sentence. One of the most serious crimes in the eyes of the Law.

Didn’t he have a conversion to Christianity in prison? I’m pretty sure I was at Uni with his son (who was incredibly handsome in an arrogant sort of way). Maybe I’m thinking of another Tory sleaze merchant though.

There's so many to choose from 😂

He was 86, that's old for a man, very old for an ex-con.

A loaded ex con mind you.

Most of them are, they just don't necessarily make it to court...

Not convicted then? Right…..
