I don't think your example is the same at all. I think many people would give up a family holiday if it saved some kids from malaria if that were ever a choice. Its all hypothetical but a holiday is hardly much of a sacrifice at all!

If the 10,000 were a zombie horde and beyond saving then I might be able to justify killing them. I don’t think I could gratuitously kill 10,000 to save one member of my family. Understand, it would break my heart to lose the one person but the guilt of being a mass murderer is not for me.

Man’s inhumanity to man is already pretty appalling. And as for the cruelty meted out to animals…

I don’t have children so the person I care most about is my wife. Yes, I would kill 10,000 other people to save her life.

I wouldn’t feel guilty about it, because obviously I’d rather nobody had to die. The person to blame would be whoever put me in that position in the first place. I’d consider it like the contestants in the squid game who wanted out but couldn’t leave and so were forced to kill each other to survive.

Surely you'd feel a little bad that 10,000 families had lost a loved one to save you losing one?

It's an interesting thought experiment because you could apply a similar logic to other things like the Israel/Palestine conflict and other wars. How many thousand civilians would you kill if you knew there was a terrorist amongst them that posed a threat to your family etc?
